My future MIL has a sense of humour

Yesterday I received one of the magazine subscriptions that she ordered for me for Christmas in the mail.

This is how it was addressed:

And just so you know that is not my last name! It's rather one of the "new" last names that she thinks Mr.D and I should adopt when we get married. Basically we were sitting around one night talking about what name I will take when we get married...both my last name and Mr.D's last name are close to ten letters long, so there is no option for hyphenating it. So we decided to combine our last names...and Debenberger was one of the options! Haha, I thought it was quite funny she addressed it like that.

We have no major plans for our weekend except a soccer game and doing some running around for wedding related stuff. I'm excited to just hang out and relax!

What do you have planned for your weekend?

Random thoughts

1. Thanks for everyone's input on my potential wedding shoes. I still really want green shoes, but I also love the two other pairs. Oh what to do?!

2. On Tuesday night, Mr.D and I went out with some of his co-workers to punk rock bingo. That's right we played bingo! Basically you play bingo while listening to punk rock's fun if you are with a good group of people and like punk music. Although I don't particularly enjoy one of his co-workers (which is another story), it was still fun.

3. Mr.D and I have started to watch Dexter. I never got into it before, but so far it's pretty good. Has anyone else watched it? If so, what do you think of it?

4. I found out today that I am getting a promotion :) It won't take place for another few weeks and I have a lot to learn, but I think it will be a great opportunity for me.

Hope you have a great day!

{wedding wednesday} shoes

These weeks keep going by way too fast! We are officially under 200 days until the wedding, which is crazy! Mr.D and I have almost been engaged for a year, so the wedding is slowly starting to feel more real.

This week is all about shoes, shoes, shoes! I have been searching for the perfect green pair of shoes, but have yet to find them :( So I have decided to search for an alternative pair. Here are a few pairs that I am really liking:

I find it really stressful to find shoes for the wedding. I know that people won't be seeing them that much, but I still want a great pair of shoes. I'm also on the hunt for green flats...I found a great pair from Target for $20, but unfortunately they don't ship to Canada :(
Which pair do you like? These are just a few options, but I'd love your opinions!

A getaway for two

Last week, I mentioned that I had something exciting to share. Well, in February it is our 3 year anniversary of dating and one year anniversary of being engaged! Mr.D decided to plan a weekend getaway for us and we are heading to Emerald Lake Lodge, which is about 30 minutes past Lake Louise. It will be nice to get away and spend the weekend with just us. We plan on going cross country skiing and maybe snow shoeing.

It looks so gorgeous and I can't wait to see it in person!

Have you ever been treated to a nice weekend away? If so, where did you go?

Weekend Recap

Another weekend has come and gone by too fast! This weekend was another busy one!

On Friday night, Mr.D and I went out to a dueling piano bar called Aussie Rules with his department at work. It was a fun time! Someone might have had too much fun and it wasn't me ;) On Saturday morning, we got up early to head back to Mr.D's hometown. It usually takes about 3 hours to get there, but it was very windy and snowy! It also didn't help that we got stuck in a traffic jam due to a big rig that drove off the road into the ditch. Oh well, we made it safely and that's all that matters. In the afternoon, there was another baby shower for my niece and future SIL. Lots of people, presents and pink clothes! My niece has a very stocked closet now! We spent the night at Mr.D's brothers house, which meant extra time to spend with our niece. I definitely held her and just stared at her while she was sleeping for a long time!

On our way home today, we made a pit stop at Old Navy. They had 50% off all of their sale stuff and I got some great things! A white dress jacket for $20 and tan boots for $20! I recommend checking it out!
What did you do this weekend?

It's the weekend!

And boy am I glad it's Friday! I have felt like a cold has been coming on all week and haven't been sleeping well, so I hope it passes and doesn't turn into a cold. Being sick is the pits!

Tonight we are off to a dueling piano bar called Aussie Rules for Mr.D's work Christmas party. A little late, but better than never :) On Saturday morning, we are off to Mr.D's hometown again for another baby shower with Mr.D's family for my future SIL and niece. It's going to be another busy weekend, but I love seeing family!

Did anyone watch the finale of Jersey Shore last night? I'm secretly sad that it's over!

What do you have planned for the weekend? What ever you are doing, hope you have a great weekend!

Fitness Goals Update

At the beginning of January, I talked about my fitness goals for this year. Although I have yet to sign up for another 5K race, Mr.D and I have started swimming 1-2 times a week. It's such a good work out! Tonight was one of those nights where I just wanted to lay in bed, but I forced myself to get up and go swimming. Once I started swimming, it felt great!

I also started the Whittle My Middle at the beginning of January and it's been going great so far. I can feel the difference in my core strength already and have noticed changes in my waist size. If you have 20 minutes a night for 5 nights a week, I definitely recommend this challenge!

The weather has been great for the past two weeks, which means I have been getting out for a 2K walk at lunch everyday. It feels to get some exercise in the middle of the day and then it's out of the way. If only the weather would stay above zero until spring...sigh!

I have something exciting to share so stay tuned next week!

Hope you are having a great day!

{wedding wednesday} hair inspiration and our rings

Another {wedding wednesday} is here! This week I have checked another item off my to-do list. I had been searching for a hair dresser and make-up artist for the wedding for a few weeks, and my bridesmaid T suggested a place that her sister in-law had gone to for her wedding. She was impressed with their work and prices, so I decided to book them. The hair salon has a few freelance make-up artists that work out of their location, so I booked one of them. He has over 35 years of experience and is supposed to be quick, efficient and know his stuff! Not to mention that he is only $50 per person and $25 for a trial. I think those prices are great considering I found some make-up artists that were just starting out and were charging $75+ per person!!

I love Cameron Diaz's hair in the movie What Happens in Vegas (see below). Hopefully my hair grows!

Although we bought them before Christmas, we can check wedding bands off from our list. For my band, I knew I wanted something that was similar to my engagement ring except with diamonds all the way across the band. Mr.D wanted something that was simple, with no diamonds. Even though we went over the budget for our bands, we both love them and will be wearing them for the rest of our lives!

Tuesday, January 19, 2010 I?

Do you ever feel like your life is boring when you read other people's blog posts? I'm not going to lie, we lead a boring life during the work week. It consists of making dinner, doing dishes, exercising and watching TV. You're jealous, just admit it. But sometimes it's okay to be boring. Like after you had a busy, busy weekend and just need the time to relax...right? (this is where you agree so I feel better about myself :) )

Did you watch the Bachelor last night? Full of d-r-a-m-a! I will admit that I have a weak spot for reality TV shows. Like The Hills, Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, and I'll stop there. Back to the Bachelor...last night was full of drama with the girls. Mr.D had to stop me from yelling at the girls on the tv! I was more than happy that Elizabeth went home...the whole talk between her and Jake about her being a flirt went right over her head!

On another random note, I finally found a pair of running tights this weekend. I have tried on a few pairs, but they have all been too long for my short legs. The ones I bought are made by Nike and have a zipper on the bottom, which I was looking for. Now I have no excuse to go running when it's cold outside!

Ok so that ended up being a random post, but I promise the next one will be better!

Little Miss Southern is having a great giveway of pretty personalized notecards.

These are so cute and would be great for Valentine's day! Go to her blog for more information and of course to enter :)

Weekend Recap

Another weekend has come and gone too fast yet again! This weekend was also a very busy one...lots of family, friends and babies!

On Friday night, Mr.D and I drove back to his hometown and got to meet our new niece! I'm not being bias or anything, but she is pretty darn cute! She is only 3 weeks old, so she didn't do much except eat, sleep and cry :) On Saturday, it was my future SIL's baby shower, so I helped to set up for that. There were a lot of people there and my niece definitely got spoiled with lots of pink clothes :) All of the boys in the family were banished to another house while the shower was on, so they came back around dinner and we had a big family dinner. It was great to see everyone...even some of Mr.D's relatives came from Michigan! On Sunday, we had breakfast with the family and then headed back home. We made a pit stop at some outlet stores, and I finally found some running tights! It is hard to find the right length for me since I am so short.

I didn't take many pictures this weekend, which makes me sad :( But there is another baby shower next Saturday, so I will try to take more then.

How was your weekend?

It's the weekend!

This week has felt super long for some reason, so I am more than happy that it's finally Friday!

After being stressed yesterday by all the things I had to get done for the weekend, I'm happy to say it all got done :) Mr.D saw how much I was stressing, and thankfully helped me do a lot of the stuff. We successfully made chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes and sugar cookies. Hopefully everyone likes them at the shower!

Our hard work!

We are off to Mr.D's hometown tonight until Sunday and I am excited to see his family. We also finally get to meet our niece!

I hope you have a great weekend!

One big ball of stress!

That is what I felt like last night and am feeling like today. And it's all my own doing! Although all of the stuff I have to get done isn't big, it just feels like I have a million and one things to do and not enough time.

I volunteered to make cookies for my future SIL's baby shower on Saturday, so I was busy making those tonight. Tomorrow night I will be decorating them and also making cupcakes. On the to do list for tomorrow night also includes: laundry, packing, exercising, etc.

Although I am sure the cupcakes and cookies will turn out fine in the end, I worry that they won't be perfect or that no one will like them. Silly I know, but I put a lot of pressure on myself for stuff like that.

On a happier note, here are two songs that I can't get enough of:
Ray Lamontagne- You Are The Best Thing

Marvin Gaye- Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

Both make me happy and want to sing when I hear them!

Do you deal well with stress?

{wedding wednesday}

We love our venue, but they do not provide everything that we will need. One of the things that they do not provide are napkins. This weekend while I was running errands I happened to find the perfect chocolate brown napkins (our colors are green, ivory/white and chocolate brown). A package of 50 cocktail napkins was $2 and a package of 50 dinner napkins was $3. We are having roughly 150 people to the wedding, so it will cost me about $20 for all of the napkins. I think that is a pretty good price!

To personalize the cocktail napkins, I was thinking of getting a stamp of our monogram or another patterned stamp. Something similar to these. It will be an easy and quick project that will add a little more to the wedding. Once the project is done, I will post pictures :)

I have also been searching for a make-up artist and hair dresser for the wedding day with no luck. There are lots out there, but they are either very expensive or not what I am looking for. It also doesn't help that I don't know many salons where we are getting married. Sometimes it would be nice to have a wedding fairy that would find everything for you! Haha.

Hope you have a fantabulous (yes, I made it up!) day!

'When you are ready to face your past'

We all have demons, and for me, my demon was the truth- my demon was who and what I was. It was the poverty, the constant moving, my eccentric parents who scavenged for garbage. No one knew anything about it. My husband and I were friends for a long time before we married, and he didn't know a thing about my past. He's from an upper-middle class background, his father was a diplomat, and I was nervous about what he would think. But he was the only person in my 20 years in NYC who said, "There's something that doesn't add up about your past."
It took me until I was almost 40 years old to sit down and write my story in earnest. My husband pretty much hog-tied me to the desk and told me to do it. But the journey didn't really begin until my mom said, "Just tell the truth." She not only challenged me but gave me permission.
The truth is a squishy little creature that takes lots of different shapes and forms, and I had been running from it for a long time. But cone I turned around and looked it in the eye, I understood the truth truly couldn't hurt me. We're stronger than our demons, because we created them, and we've got to stare them down. And I've come to believe that, very often, what we think is least attractive about us- our faults and our flaws- is actually our greatest sources of strength. When you get down to it, they're the best things we've got going.
-Jeannette Wells

Jeannette Wells is the author of the bestselling memoir The Glass Castle. If you have not read this book, I recommend running out and buying it now! In her book, Jeannette tells her story of growing up in a dysfunction family; a father who was brilliant when sober and not stealing from the family, and a mother who would rather paint a picture to last a lifetime than care for her children. It is amazing that Jeannette turned out to be a "normal" adult being that her parents never showed her the way growing up.

I enjoyed reading Jeannette's story, yet at the same time I found myself angry at her parents. Her parents put their needs before their children's, whether it be her father stealing money so he can get drunk or her mother not working as a teacher because she would rather paint all day. I am not saying that I know what a "normal" family is, but this book made me be thankful that my parents ensured there was a roof over our heads and food on the table. It also made me realize what an important role being a parent is; you are the ones who shape and direct the children to become responsible adults.

If you have read this book, what were your thoughts after reading it? How did you view Jeannette's parents while reading it and once done?

Weekend Recap

This weekend was pretty low key and that was just fine and dandy with me. The next two weekends are filled with family visits and baby showers!

On Friday, Mr.D and I went and swam laps. Exciting I know! Then we tried out a new sushi place, which was delicious. On Saturday, I did some running around for stuff that I need to make cookies and cupcakes for the baby shower next weekend. Hopefully my ideas turn out and I will share them later in the week. That night, my BM K and another friend came over. We made homemade pizzas and got caught up. Sunday consisted of lots of exercise! Mr.D and I swam laps again and then we had a soccer game later that night.

Speaking of exercise, I tried this workout video last week and I was hurting for two days after! I didn't even come close to 500 reps, but maybe one day :)

This week is supposed to be above 0C, so I am hoping to get out on my lunch break for a walk. I am so ready for winter to be over!

How was your weekend?

These are a few of my favourite things...

My brain doesn't want to think today, so I decided to show you some of my favourite hair products. Let it be known, that if I leave my hair to dry naturally, it looks something similar to a 70's poof.

It also doesn't help that I have really thick hair. So these products are my saving grace to help calm and make it straight.

First up, we have the Moroccan Oil treatment. Although it is on the expensive side it is my life saver! It makes my hair very smooth and manageable, not to mention it's great smell! Go here to locate a salon in your area that sells it. The second product is the hydrating styling cream, also by Moroccan Oil.

The next product is the Clove conditioner by Aveda. The conditioner has a bit of colour to it, which helps maintain dyed hair. You can buy it here. For being a cheaper conditioner ($8CAD) John Frieda's Frizz Ease line is great! You can buy it at Wal-Mart, Target, etc.

The final two products are the shampoo and conditioner by Moroccan Oil. I'm not sure how much these retail for as my mom bought them for me. If you follow the first link, you can find out where to buy them.

On a random note, we tried this delicious recipe for southwestern black bean soup tonight. It was easy and quick to make and perfect for a cold winter night.

Hope you have a great weekend!

A special annoucement..

Although this is over a week late, I'm excited to say I am an auntie! Mr.D's brother and his wife had their beautiful little girl on December 28th. We haven't gotten the chance to meet her yet because we live 3 hours apart. But there is a baby shower on the 16th, so we will finally get the chance then!

When we were in the States, Mr.D and I might have gotten lots of adorable clothes to spoil her with!

Do you have nieces or nephews to spoil?

{wedding wednesday}

Since I still have 8 months to go until my wedding, and I don't have enough wedding stuff to talk about all the time, I've decided to start Wedding Wednesdays. I can't take credit for the idea, as I found it on Christin's fabulous blog!

We are having our wedding in Alberta and because my family is from Ontario, we didn't invite a lot of my parent's friends and some relatives. To make up for this, we have decided to have a "buck and doe" (as we call them in the East) in Ontario before the wedding. My mom tentatively set the date for July 10th, which is exciting! We are keeping it simple by renting a hall and then having appetizers and maybe a DJ playing. We are just looking forward to spending time with all of the people that can't make it to the wedding. My mom was also talking about having a shower for me while I am home, so there will be lots of planning for that too. Am I crazy to take all of this on a month before the wedding?!

Also, thank you to all of those that gave their opinion on my potential wedding earrings :) I think I am going to keep them and because I only spent $40 on them, I won't be too concern if there is something else I find and end up wearing.

Blogger help!

For all of those that use blogspot as their blog host, I have a question for you. Is there a way to set it up, so I can respond to people's comments right under their comment as opposed to starting a whole new comment? (hopefully that makes sense!) I can't seem to figure it out, so maybe it's not possible!

Thanks in advance!

Fitness Goals

Since running my first 5k in October and all of the Christmas eating, I have been left feeling a "blah" about my body. It also doesn't help that I feel the pressure of wearing a wedding dress in 8 months!

Although I am a short person, I really struggle with my core and dreaded love handles. If I gain weight, it goes directly there and not to mention my butt too! (butts are nice but not when they don't fit into jeans anymore!) I have decided to do the Whittle My Middle challenge that was started by Angela. She started her challenge on the 1st of January, but I have decided to start mine as of today. So for the next 30 days, I am going to be whittling my middle away! I took before pictures and if I work up the courage and of course notice a change, I might post the after pictures.

I am also looking at doing a fitness bootcamp class, but I have never tried one, so I have no idea what to expect from it. Has anyone done one of these classes and can fill me in?

I'm definitely ready for the spring to come so I can get back outside to walk and run. It's not fun to do either when it's -20C out!

For those that live where there is snow, how do you deal with it and still remain active?

Weekend Recap

Another weekend went by way too fast yet again! I'm sad that the Christmas holidays are over :(

On Saturday, Mr.D and I took a road trip to Banff and Lake Louise. Banff is about an hour from our house and Lake Louise is another 40 minutes from Banff. It was definitely worth the drive though!

*warning, I might have gone overboard with the pictures!*

Back to reality

Mr.D and I got home late last night from my mom's house. The nine days went by too fast and it was sad to leave my mom again. I am back to work on Monday, so we are going have a relaxing weekend. The plan for today is to head to Banff, which is an hour from our house, to look around and then have a nice dinner at The Keg. One last big dinner before it's back to eating right...pretty sure I gained 4lbs while at home over Christmas. Not good at all!

On the plane ride home, I watched the movie 500 Days of Summer. Has anyone seen it? It was about a guy named Tom that believed in true love and destiny. He falls for a girl named Summer, who does not want a relationship and wants things to remain on a casual level. Tom believes that Summer is "the one" for him and ends up with a broken heart. In the end, he realizes that the relationship he had with Summer was never a healthy or good one.

I really enjoyed the movie because I am a sucker for romance and true love. Do you believe in true love or think that there is one person out there for everyone?

Hope you have a great weekend!
