Highlights of 2012 {part two}

Continued from yesterday....

July: I cheered the Stampede Road Race with Cori, Mr.D and I rode from Canmore to Banff, and helped Nicole celebrate her birthday.

August: we went to Whistler and Kamloops for a week with Alison and Justin, took a short visit home, ran the MEC 10K, and took a day trip to the mountains with Mr.D and Harley.
September: enjoyed the gorgeous September weather and ran the Run for Water 10k

October: went to many CrossFit classes and ran the MEC fall river run 10k

November: ran the last chance half marathon and drove right back into CrossFit

December: ran the Santa Shuffle 5K with my co-workers and Nicole

Apparently this year involved a lot of races, CrossFit and seeing Cori at races :) Overall, it was a great year!

Tell me: how was your year?

Highlights of 2012 {part one}

I know everyone says it, but this year seriously flew by! I feel like it was just Christmas last year and suddenly here we are less than a week until Christmas. Craziness. Instead of telling you all of the things I did this past year, why not recap it with pictures?

December/January: we took a trip to the Dominican Republic with my family. Nothing beats sun and sand!

February: nothing much exciting happened this month. We had some sunny days and I spent the month trying new recipes and not eating out.  You can find some of the recipes we tried here, here, here and here.

March: nothing much exciting happened this month either. Cruz came over for a sleep over and I ran my first 5 mile race.

April: I am starting to think we don't lead an exciting life or I just don't take my pictures. Harley had another sleep over, but with his other girlfriend Gia and we hung out with Alison and Justin.

May: I ran the Scotiabank half marathon and PR'd! My cousin also came for a visit and we had our pictures taken by the talented Whitney.
June: I ran the Footstock half marathon in the pouring rain and we attempted to go camping in Fernie with friends.

Tell me: how was the first part of 2012 for you? Any memorable highlights?

Happy Thursday everyone! So close, yet so far from the weekend and holidays! The other night when I was walking Harley, I was trying to come up with a fun topic for today's TTT. I kept drawing blanks and then it hit me....why not do a post with questions and three answers about myself to see who knows this blogger well? An open letter or two

You can find some of my other open letters here.

Dear Christmas: how the heck are you only 6 days away?! I swear it was just the summer and now suddenly it's the end of December. I wish Christmas was as exciting as when we were kids. Nothing beat staying up late and getting up at 6am to sneak downstairs to look at what we got.

Dear man in Superstore: thank you so much for walking by while I was struggling to get a box of cereal from the back of the top shelf. I really, really appreciate your offer to help considering you were much taller than me. Oh wait, you were a jerk and didn't bother to ask. But don't worry, this shorty figured out that if she used her roll of wrapping paper, she could in fact get the cereal.

Dear woman in Superstore: as I was struggling to pack my groceries up quickly, you insisted on rolling your cart forward into my hip time and time again. It was wonderful for you to do made me want to move even faster to get out of your way. {worst experience last night if you couldn't tell!}

Dear running: I haven't shown you much love or time in the past couple of weeks, but I think I am slowly starting to fall in love with you again. I have had a couple great runs lately that have left me feeling fabulous after each one. If the weather cooperates, I think a running comeback is in the cards!

Tell me: anything you'd like to direct an open letter to today?

Let's get sweaty

A couple things first....did anyone watch the finale of Homeland and Dexter? Gah, didn't see that coming in Homeland! Same with the truth about Deb's accident. Sad that both of the shows are over for now. Second, how the heck is Christmas in a week?! Third, I will not be partaking in the blogger day of silence for the victims of the shooting in CT. I can understand wanting to show respect for the victims, but doing a post telling others not to blog does not solve the issue or help the victims. Why not donate instead? I realize others may not feel this way, but it's my blog and that's that.

I haven't talked much lately about the workouts that I've been doing, so I thought I would do a post with a few that I've done recently. I will warn you it involves lots of CrossFit as I have barely been running.

We did this one on Saturday and it was deceivingly hard! I definitely didn't use 110lbs for the push jerk (I used 65lbs) and a purple band for the pull ups. I finished in 11:43.

I had never had a run in with Madi before, and she is killer! I think the worst part was going from the back extensions to the squats. My lower back was screaming at me and did not want to move at all. I finished in 25:42.

This was another hard workout! I personally hate rowing, but make myself go to be better at it.  I used 65lbs for the OHS and finished in 13:59 (minus the 9 minutes of rest).

Tell me: how have your workouts been lately? Anything good that you'd like to share? And don't tell me about your workouts between the sheets either ;)

Highlights of the weekend

Well I officially sucked at blogging again last week. Life is just so damn crazy lately and I am really hoping it slows down in the New Year. Mr.D was out of town this weekend for a funeral, so it was just Harley and I hanging out. He is good company....he doesn't talk back at all and listens to my ramblings ;)

Oh and yesterday was Mr.D's 30 birthday...he's officially old now. Good thing I still love him :)

1. Made cookies for the pot luck at CrossFt on Sunday
2. Played with Harley in the backyard
3. Might have gone overboard with buying new outfits for my nieces
4. My new favourite ornament. Found it at Michael's for $3

1. Bought myself a new hat
2. Got groceries on Saturday night. Kind of lame, but it's so quiet then!
3. Made cheesy vegetable soup on Sunday
4. Harley and I. Had to bribe him with treats to take that picture

Tell me: how was your weekend? What were you up to?

Hightlights of the weekend

Well, it's sure been quiet around this little piece of the internet lately and I apologize for that. Last Monday started off so poorly and my week just didn't improve from there. It left me with little desire to blog, but hopefully this week will be better.

1. Holiday cards are starting to arrive!
2. my new scarf that I picked up while Christmas shopping yesterday
3. A bunch of the Christmas presents I wrapped on Sunday

1. My lovely Christmas swap package from Destini
2. Harley and I. How excited does he look?!

My holiday package from Destini included:

I was spoiled! Thank you again Destini!
Also included in my weekend but not photographed was:

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! This weekend was super snowy here...I think we got 5cm yesterday alone! Yuck. Hoping that it stops soon and the warmer weather comes back soon.

Another weekend recap in pictures:

  1.  I ran the Santa Shuffle 5k on Saturday. I ended up running it with Nicole and had a great time! (thank you for letting me join you and Penny, Nicole!) They gave you a medal AND a Lindt advent calendar. Totally worth the $25
  2. My co-workers and I who also ran it
  3. Us again
  1.  Our front yard
  2. The tree in our front yard totally snow covered
  3. Me bundled up for a walk with Harley. This is how we survive the winter in Canada :)
  1. We set up our Christmas decorations this weekend
  2. Mr. Harley and our tree
Another highlight of my weekend that I didn't take a picture of? Absolutely killing my 1RM (rep max) of deadlifts at CrossFit yesterday. My previous PR was 175lbs and I managed to increase it to 200lbs!! So stoked about this. My next goal? Deadlift double my body weight. One day.

Favorite Things Christmas Swap 2012: A Reminder

Happy Friday everyone! I am so ready for the weekend. It's been a long week. We actually don't have much planned for the weekend except that I am running the Santa Shuffle 5k tomorrow and hopefully putting up the Christmas tree on Sunday.

Just wanted to put out a reminder to everyone participating in the Christmas blog swap that packages are to mailed out tomorrow. If you are going to be late sending out your package, please make sure your partner is aware :) Looking forward to seeing what everyone has sent their partner. I will be doing a link up on December 12, 2012 so make sure your post is up before then :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Three Things Thursday

Happy Thursday everyone! Hope you are having a good week so far. Thank you for all of your comments yesterday....I am excited to be asked to blog for the race and appreciate the opportunity :)

I think I am going to stick with my themed TTT (you can find my other themed ones here, here and here) this week. Only because I love working out so much, the theme this week is working out.

Three CrossFit movements that I love:
  1. Box jumps
  2. Toes to bar
  3. Cleans
Three workouts that I love:
  1. Running
  2. Biking
  3. CrossFit

Three of the worst things to happen while working out:
  1. Clothing creeping into places that it shouldn't
  2. The sudden rumble in the stomach that signals you better get your ass to a toilet
  3. Cramps that just won't go away
Three of the best things to happen while working out:
  1. Setting PR's whether in the gym or in a race
  2. Feeling awesome about yourself
  3. Finally getting a new movement (ie: unassisted pull-ups, etc)
Three workouts that I will never choose to do:
  1. Zumba
  2. Jazzercize
  3. Step classes (I have ZERO co-ordination)
Three pet peeves when it comes to working out:
  1. People who don't wear enough deodrant (or at all) and workout near you
  2. Excessive grunting and groaning when lifting weights
  3. Walkers who start at the front of the race
Three workout related goals:
  1. Run a full marathon
  2. Get one muscle up
  3. Deadlift 200lbs
Tell me: what do you love about working out? If you could any workout, what would it be?

An exciting opportunity

A couple weeks ago, I was presented with a great opportunity that combines two things I love. Running and blogging! Do you remember earlier this year when I ran my first 5 mile race? Well, the race director had found my race review and has asked me to be an ambassador for their race next year. Of course I jumped at the chance!

The race that I will be blogging about is the Run for L'Arche.  A little background on the race:

·         L’Arche Calgary was started in 1973
·         L’Arche Calgary has five homes, a supported independent living program and a day  program
·         L’Arche Calgary supports 29 members with a developmental disability
·         L’Arche Calgary has staff and volunteers from 26 different countries
·         There are 139 L’Arche communities in 40 countries around the world
·         2013 will be the 3rd annual Run for L’Arche
·         All proceeds from the Run for L’Arche will go to support L’Arche Calgary’s homes and programs for people with developmental disabilities.
·         The 2011 Run for L’Arche offered a Half Marathon and a 1K Fun Run Walk (400 max. participants) - $24,000 raised
·         The 2012 Run for L’Arche offered a Half Marathon, 5 Mile and 1K Fun Run Walk (550 max. participants) - $42,000 raised
·         The 2013 Run for L’Arche offers a Half Marathon, 5 Mile and 1K Fun Run Walk (600 max. participants)

I am excited to be a part of this race and to be running my 7th half marathon! If anyone would like to join me in running the half marathon or the 5 mile, you can register here

Keep an eye out in the new year for my posts on how my training is going and tips and tricks for new runners.  If you want to learn more about the race, you can follow them on Facebook or Twitter.

2. The awesome yarn wreath that Alison made for me. Thank you again Alison!
3. Curled my hair on Saturday. I love how it turned out!

From left to right:

1. Poor Harley was sick on Friday. He was a sleepy puppy, so we cuddled on the floor.
2. Harley was feeling better by Sunday, so he came on a fantastic run with me! It was a sunny and gorgeous day out.
3. The pretty flowers that Mr.D bought me on Saturday. He's a keeper :)
4. All of the left over treats from the blogger meet up on Saturday night. Everyone needs to come back to help me eat them!!

As I mentioned above, I had organized a blogger meet up on Saturday night. About 9 awesome bloggers came out, and we ate, chatted and had a Chinese gift exchange. It was a fun night! Thank you again to everyone for coming and bringing food. Can't wait to do it again!

A new product

I have no excuse or reason for not posting yesterday besides I couldn't think of a good topic. Moving on and today is a new day :)

A couple weeks ago, I was emailed and send an offer to try some new to me beauty products. I am a big fan of trying new products, so of course I jumped at the chance. The products that I was sent were by the brand Gratiae, which is an organic skin care line. Gratiae has everything from skin care to men's care to anti aging products.

I was sent a small sample of the lifting moisture cream and the exfoliating body scrub.

From the website, the lifting moisture cream is described as:

This light, easily absorbed, fast-acting, effective cream is the perfect way to nourish and moisturize your skin. It contains a newly developed blend of thermo-mineral water, restorative natural flora, and organic oats and oils. This new formula has a remarkable face-lifting effect. It re-tones the skin, balances the moisture level, boosts cell renewal, and combats wrinkles and fine lines. To facilitate optimum lifting, this product comes with an authentic volcanic stone designed to stimulate blood circulation.

Using the small sample that I had, I definitely loved the product! It was light and didn't leave my oil prone skin feeling greasy. If the price wasn't so high, I would definitely buy more.

From the website, the exfoliating body cream is described as:

This refreshing body scrub exfoliates and cleanses the skin, leaving you feeling invigorated and revitalized. It accelerates blood circulation and leaves your skin refreshed and soft.

I've used this product a couple of times in the shower and have loved it so far! It has a scent of apple, green tea and ginger, and smells fantastic! It also leaves your skin feeling super smooth, which is nice for the dry Alberta winters.

Overall, I loved both of these products. Both smell fantastic and leave your skin feeling great. The only downside is the price depending on the product that you choose.

Tell me: have you tried any new products lately?

Highlights of the weekend

Hello Monday! I've got some fun things planned for later in the week and weekend, so let's hope this week goes by quickly.

This weekend, we:
  • took Harley for a run on Friday night. The weather was pretty nice, so it didn't make running in the dark too bad
  • went to CrossFit on Saturday morning. Tough but good workout!

  • Met up with Alison and Jen for lunch on Saturday. Some of us got a little lost on the way to and from the restaurant, but we made it and had a great lunch :)
  • Took Harley with me for my 10km run on Sunday morning. Immediately after we got home, this is what Harley did:

  • worked on a couple DIY projects. I will do a how-to later this week or next
Tell me: how was your weekend? What were you up to?

Friday's letters

Happy Friday everyone! For being a short week, it sure felt l-o-n-g. Or was it just me?

Because every post needs a picture :)
Dear weather: thank you for being so nice lately. I really could do without the -30C and snow ever again.

Dear marathon: you are seriously tempting me. I know it won't be easy to tackle you, but I almost feel up for the challenge. Just tell me to go sign up already.

Dear Calgary bloggers: looking forward to seeing everyone next weekend! :)

Dear weekend: thank you for coming around again. The only thing I have planned is lunch with two fabulous ladies on Saturday. And of course a CrossFit class and a run. Can't forget those ;)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Three Things Thursday

Since my post last week was so popular, I thought I would do it again with some new categories. Feel free to use again :)

Three chores I despise:
  1. cleaning the toilets
  2. putting away laundry
  3. picking up dog poop
Three movies recently watched:
  1. The Watch
  2. Forest Gump
  3. Pitch Perfect
Three places I would love to travel to:
  1.  Greece
  2. Australia
  3. Croatia
Three things I wish were easier:
  1. Pooping in a public place
  2. Ignoring the sound of someone else eating while watching TV
  3. Not looking at a car accident when you drive by it
Three superpowers I'd love to have:
  1. time travel
  2. the ability to fly
  3. the ability to read minds
 Three things I don't understand:
  1. when people complain about things, but never do anything to change it
  2. why people wear sweatpants in public (and I'm not referring to yoga pants)
  3. why girls say they don't fart. We all know you fart, don't deny it!!

Tell me: What superpower would you have if you could have one or what chore do you hate the most?

Last Chance Half Marthon {race report}

As I mentioned yesterday, I ran the Last Chance Half Marathon on Sunday for the first time. This was my first time running it and it was fun to run a new race.

Before the race

On Saturday, I went to Gord's running store to pick up my race package. In the package, we got our race number, a shirt, a brochure and information about the race. Pretty standard stuff for a Canadian race. The race didn't start until 10am on Sunday and started out of Eau Claire. It was nice to have a later race start, so I was able to sleep in, take my time getting ready and make my way downtown. I got to Eau Claire about 25 minutes before the race started, so I used the bathroom and waited inside to stay warm until about five minutes before the start.

The race

The race started just outside of Eau Claire and headed towards Crowchild Trail. At Crowchild, we crossed the bridge and headed back towards downtown. Just passed downtown, we headed towards the zoo and then into the Inglewood area and even further south. We turned around at 15km and started to head back to the start.  Since we had a dumping of snow starting Thursday to Saturday, the pathways had been cleared but were still covered in snow. This made the run so, so much harder as it felt like I was slipping with every step that I took. The other thing I found hard mentally was that I had never run that far south on the pathways, so I had no idea where we were heading and where we were going to be turning around. That was my own fault though!

The first ten kilometers I felt really good, but then the half way mark hit and I started to go down hill fast. I had a cramp that started and didn't let up for the rest of the race. I really don't know what caused it as I didn't do anything differently and didn't over drink during the race. The cramp along with the snow really got to me mentally and I struggled in the second half. I took so many walking breaks and kept telling myself I couldn't do it. Luckily, I made it to the end, but well over the time I was hoping for.

I finished in 2:02:38, 19 out of 50 in my age group and 184 out of 385 people.

  After the race

I didn't stay after the race as Mr.D didn't come with me. The race does provide a breakfast for all the runners, but I was ready to be home and into warm pj's! They did provide bottled water and granola bars at the finish line though.

It was a pretty good race in terms of organization, water stations and the volunteers, but not sure if I will run it again. Before signing up, I had read other race recaps and other years definitely had better weather when it comes to the snow. Granted, we do live in Alberta, so having snow on race day is a great possibility. Oh well, half marathon #6 is done and done!
