Favorite Things Christmas Swap 2012: A Reminder

Happy Friday everyone! I am so ready for the weekend. It's been a long week. We actually don't have much planned for the weekend except that I am running the Santa Shuffle 5k tomorrow and hopefully putting up the Christmas tree on Sunday.

Just wanted to put out a reminder to everyone participating in the Christmas blog swap that packages are to mailed out tomorrow. If you are going to be late sending out your package, please make sure your partner is aware :) Looking forward to seeing what everyone has sent their partner. I will be doing a link up on December 12, 2012 so make sure your post is up before then :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Three Things Thursday

Happy Thursday everyone! Hope you are having a good week so far. Thank you for all of your comments yesterday....I am excited to be asked to blog for the race and appreciate the opportunity :)

I think I am going to stick with my themed TTT (you can find my other themed ones here, here and here) this week. Only because I love working out so much, the theme this week is working out.

Three CrossFit movements that I love:
  1. Box jumps
  2. Toes to bar
  3. Cleans
Three workouts that I love:
  1. Running
  2. Biking
  3. CrossFit

Three of the worst things to happen while working out:
  1. Clothing creeping into places that it shouldn't
  2. The sudden rumble in the stomach that signals you better get your ass to a toilet
  3. Cramps that just won't go away
Three of the best things to happen while working out:
  1. Setting PR's whether in the gym or in a race
  2. Feeling awesome about yourself
  3. Finally getting a new movement (ie: unassisted pull-ups, etc)
Three workouts that I will never choose to do:
  1. Zumba
  2. Jazzercize
  3. Step classes (I have ZERO co-ordination)
Three pet peeves when it comes to working out:
  1. People who don't wear enough deodrant (or at all) and workout near you
  2. Excessive grunting and groaning when lifting weights
  3. Walkers who start at the front of the race
Three workout related goals:
  1. Run a full marathon
  2. Get one muscle up
  3. Deadlift 200lbs
Tell me: what do you love about working out? If you could any workout, what would it be?

An exciting opportunity

A couple weeks ago, I was presented with a great opportunity that combines two things I love. Running and blogging! Do you remember earlier this year when I ran my first 5 mile race? Well, the race director had found my race review and has asked me to be an ambassador for their race next year. Of course I jumped at the chance!

The race that I will be blogging about is the Run for L'Arche.  A little background on the race:

·         L’Arche Calgary was started in 1973
·         L’Arche Calgary has five homes, a supported independent living program and a day  program
·         L’Arche Calgary supports 29 members with a developmental disability
·         L’Arche Calgary has staff and volunteers from 26 different countries
·         There are 139 L’Arche communities in 40 countries around the world
·         2013 will be the 3rd annual Run for L’Arche
·         All proceeds from the Run for L’Arche will go to support L’Arche Calgary’s homes and programs for people with developmental disabilities.
·         The 2011 Run for L’Arche offered a Half Marathon and a 1K Fun Run Walk (400 max. participants) - $24,000 raised
·         The 2012 Run for L’Arche offered a Half Marathon, 5 Mile and 1K Fun Run Walk (550 max. participants) - $42,000 raised
·         The 2013 Run for L’Arche offers a Half Marathon, 5 Mile and 1K Fun Run Walk (600 max. participants)

I am excited to be a part of this race and to be running my 7th half marathon! If anyone would like to join me in running the half marathon or the 5 mile, you can register here

Keep an eye out in the new year for my posts on how my training is going and tips and tricks for new runners.  If you want to learn more about the race, you can follow them on Facebook or Twitter.

Weekend highlights

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend? Mine was fun :)  I will recap it with pictures.

From left to right:

1. I had a marvelous nap with Harley on Sunday. He was keeping me warm.
2. The awesome yarn wreath that Alison made for me. Thank you again Alison!
3. Curled my hair on Saturday. I love how it turned out!

From left to right:

1. Poor Harley was sick on Friday. He was a sleepy puppy, so we cuddled on the floor.
2. Harley was feeling better by Sunday, so he came on a fantastic run with me! It was a sunny and gorgeous day out.
3. The pretty flowers that Mr.D bought me on Saturday. He's a keeper :)
4. All of the left over treats from the blogger meet up on Saturday night. Everyone needs to come back to help me eat them!!

As I mentioned above, I had organized a blogger meet up on Saturday night. About 9 awesome bloggers came out, and we ate, chatted and had a Chinese gift exchange. It was a fun night! Thank you again to everyone for coming and bringing food. Can't wait to do it again!

Tell me: how was your weekend? What were you up to?

Three Things Thursday

Since we just got another dumping of snow, I figured a winter theme for today's Three Things Thursday would work well :)

  1. cuddling up on the couch with the fire place on
  2. being able to wear fleece pj's and not sweat to death
  3.  hot chocolate
Three of the best Christmas presents I have ever got:
  1. a Barbie sleeping bag
  2. a doll that came with all of these medical tools
  3. a straw that was shaped as glasses
Three of the best memories about Christmas:
  1. spending Christmas morning with my mom and then going to my aunt's house with my dad in the afternoon
  2. getting to open one present on Christmas Eve
  3. decorating the Christmas tree with my family
Three of my favorite Christmas/holiday songs:
  1. anything by Michael Buble
  2. Jingle bell rocks
  3. Dominique the Christmas Donkey {JUST KIDDING! This is the most annoying song ever. Listen here...if you dare}
Three of the worst things about winter:
  1. the cold weather
  2. not being able to run as much outside
  3. the less day light hours
Three of my favorite holiday/Christmas movies:
  1. Elf
  2. The Holiday
  3. Home Alone

Tell me: what you love or hate about winter? Best Christmas memory?

A new product

I have no excuse or reason for not posting yesterday besides I couldn't think of a good topic. Moving on and today is a new day :)

A couple weeks ago, I was emailed and send an offer to try some new to me beauty products. I am a big fan of trying new products, so of course I jumped at the chance. The products that I was sent were by the brand Gratiae, which is an organic skin care line. Gratiae has everything from skin care to men's care to anti aging products.

I was sent a small sample of the lifting moisture cream and the exfoliating body scrub.

From the website, the lifting moisture cream is described as:

This light, easily absorbed, fast-acting, effective cream is the perfect way to nourish and moisturize your skin. It contains a newly developed blend of thermo-mineral water, restorative natural flora, and organic oats and oils. This new formula has a remarkable face-lifting effect. It re-tones the skin, balances the moisture level, boosts cell renewal, and combats wrinkles and fine lines. To facilitate optimum lifting, this product comes with an authentic volcanic stone designed to stimulate blood circulation.

Using the small sample that I had, I definitely loved the product! It was light and didn't leave my oil prone skin feeling greasy. If the price wasn't so high, I would definitely buy more.

From the website, the exfoliating body cream is described as:

This refreshing body scrub exfoliates and cleanses the skin, leaving you feeling invigorated and revitalized. It accelerates blood circulation and leaves your skin refreshed and soft.

I've used this product a couple of times in the shower and have loved it so far! It has a scent of apple, green tea and ginger, and smells fantastic! It also leaves your skin feeling super smooth, which is nice for the dry Alberta winters.

Overall, I loved both of these products. Both smell fantastic and leave your skin feeling great. The only downside is the price depending on the product that you choose.

Tell me: have you tried any new products lately?

Highlights of the weekend

Hello Monday! I've got some fun things planned for later in the week and weekend, so let's hope this week goes by quickly.

This weekend, we:
  • took Harley for a run on Friday night. The weather was pretty nice, so it didn't make running in the dark too bad
  • went to CrossFit on Saturday morning. Tough but good workout!

  • Met up with Alison and Jen for lunch on Saturday. Some of us got a little lost on the way to and from the restaurant, but we made it and had a great lunch :)
  • Took Harley with me for my 10km run on Sunday morning. Immediately after we got home, this is what Harley did:

  • worked on a couple DIY projects. I will do a how-to later this week or next
Tell me: how was your weekend? What were you up to?

Friday's letters

Happy Friday everyone! For being a short week, it sure felt l-o-n-g. Or was it just me?

Because every post needs a picture :)
Dear weather: thank you for being so nice lately. I really could do without the -30C and snow ever again.

Dear marathon: you are seriously tempting me. I know it won't be easy to tackle you, but I almost feel up for the challenge. Just tell me to go sign up already.

Dear Calgary bloggers: looking forward to seeing everyone next weekend! :)

Dear weekend: thank you for coming around again. The only thing I have planned is lunch with two fabulous ladies on Saturday. And of course a CrossFit class and a run. Can't forget those ;)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Three Things Thursday

Since my post last week was so popular, I thought I would do it again with some new categories. Feel free to use again :)

Three chores I despise:
  1. cleaning the toilets
  2. putting away laundry
  3. picking up dog poop
Three movies recently watched:
  1. The Watch
  2. Forest Gump
  3. Pitch Perfect
Three places I would love to travel to:
  1.  Greece
  2. Australia
  3. Croatia
Three things I wish were easier:
  1. Pooping in a public place
  2. Ignoring the sound of someone else eating while watching TV
  3. Not looking at a car accident when you drive by it
Three superpowers I'd love to have:
  1. time travel
  2. the ability to fly
  3. the ability to read minds
 Three things I don't understand:
  1. when people complain about things, but never do anything to change it
  2. why people wear sweatpants in public (and I'm not referring to yoga pants)
  3. why girls say they don't fart. We all know you fart, don't deny it!!

Tell me: What superpower would you have if you could have one or what chore do you hate the most?

Last Chance Half Marthon {race report}

As I mentioned yesterday, I ran the Last Chance Half Marathon on Sunday for the first time. This was my first time running it and it was fun to run a new race.

Before the race

On Saturday, I went to Gord's running store to pick up my race package. In the package, we got our race number, a shirt, a brochure and information about the race. Pretty standard stuff for a Canadian race. The race didn't start until 10am on Sunday and started out of Eau Claire. It was nice to have a later race start, so I was able to sleep in, take my time getting ready and make my way downtown. I got to Eau Claire about 25 minutes before the race started, so I used the bathroom and waited inside to stay warm until about five minutes before the start.

The race

The race started just outside of Eau Claire and headed towards Crowchild Trail. At Crowchild, we crossed the bridge and headed back towards downtown. Just passed downtown, we headed towards the zoo and then into the Inglewood area and even further south. We turned around at 15km and started to head back to the start.  Since we had a dumping of snow starting Thursday to Saturday, the pathways had been cleared but were still covered in snow. This made the run so, so much harder as it felt like I was slipping with every step that I took. The other thing I found hard mentally was that I had never run that far south on the pathways, so I had no idea where we were heading and where we were going to be turning around. That was my own fault though!

The first ten kilometers I felt really good, but then the half way mark hit and I started to go down hill fast. I had a cramp that started and didn't let up for the rest of the race. I really don't know what caused it as I didn't do anything differently and didn't over drink during the race. The cramp along with the snow really got to me mentally and I struggled in the second half. I took so many walking breaks and kept telling myself I couldn't do it. Luckily, I made it to the end, but well over the time I was hoping for.

I finished in 2:02:38, 19 out of 50 in my age group and 184 out of 385 people.

  After the race

I didn't stay after the race as Mr.D didn't come with me. The race does provide a breakfast for all the runners, but I was ready to be home and into warm pj's! They did provide bottled water and granola bars at the finish line though.

It was a pretty good race in terms of organization, water stations and the volunteers, but not sure if I will run it again. Before signing up, I had read other race recaps and other years definitely had better weather when it comes to the snow. Granted, we do live in Alberta, so having snow on race day is a great possibility. Oh well, half marathon #6 is done and done!

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! I am off work today, but Mr.D has to work so I have the day to myself. Nothing major planned except for some cleaning around the house. I am so exciting I know!

This weekend, we:
  • watched a lot of Breaking Bad episodes.  Such a good show!
  • watched the move 'The Watch'. Don't waste your time on it. So bad!
  • Hung out inside because it was freaking cold here!

  • the sun finally came out this weekend, which was long over due in Calgary. I know someone who enjoyed the patches of sunshine in our house....

  • on Sunday morning, I ran the Last Chance Half Marathon. Full race report coming tomorrow, but it was cold and snowy!
Tell me: how was your weekend? What were you up to?

Friday's letters

Happy Friday everyone! I am so, so excited the weekend is here and even better that it's a long weekend. Unfortunately, Mr.D doesn't get Monday off, so it's just me and Harley for the day.

Dear snow: please don't actually amount to 25cms by Saturday morning. I really don't want that much of you. But, if you do have to come, please make sure you have stopped by Sunday.

Dear half marathon: I am ready to kick your butt!

Dear blogging friends: there are a few of you who chose{won't name any names} to use my most hated words that I mentioned yesterday....for now, we are no longer friends ;)

Dear blogging friends again: I found another word I hate....boom. As in when people use it to say "boom I just did something amazing". Don't like it at all.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Three Things Thursday

Howdy Thursday! I will take you, but it'd be ten times better if you were Friday. Can you make that happen?! I haven't done a TTT post in a while, but decided to change it up a bit this time. TTT combined with categories. Crazy and original I know. Feel fee to steal the idea ;)

Three books I've read recently:
  1. Baby Proof- Emily Giffin
  2. Love the One You Are With- Emily Giffin
  3. Heart of the Matter- Emily Giffin
* so I've gone a little crazy reading her books. I think I've had my fill for awhile :)
Three shows you must watch:
  1.  Sons of Anarchy {Google search Charlie'll know why I love it then}
  2. Raising Hope {Ma Maw is freakin' hilarious!}
  3. Happy Endings
Three things I'd take if I was stuck on a deserted island:
  1.  A picture of my family since that's more than three people, so they can't all be there
  2. An unlimited supply of Diet Coke
  3. An unlimited supply of tampons
Three races I'd like to run:
  1. the Chicago marathon
  2. the San Francisco women's marathon
  3. any Ironman event
 Three new to me blogs:
  1. Jen at nutcaseinpoint
  2. Jessica at girl walks into a barbell
  3. Solana at cavegirl on the run
Three things I am looking forward to:
  1. my half marathon and the delicious Tim Horton's breakfast sandwich I've earned after it
  2. my trip to Ireland in the spring
  3. the weekend
Three things that REALLY annoy me:
  1. the use of the followings words: prego, preggers, hubby, bestie {if you use those on purpose around me, we will no longer be friends. You've been warned!}
  2. people who are so cocky and high on themselves
  3. the sound of someone eating or chewing while watching tv or while it's quiet in the room
Tell me: what are you three things this Thursday? Anything that really annoys you or what would you take if you were stranded on an deserted island?

Let's all brag for a moment

The other night at CrossFit, I was finally able to figure out how to kip a handstand push up and was super excited for myself! It got me thinking how I'd love to tell people about it, but I don't want people to think that I am bragging. Then I thought about it again and said "screw it"! This is my blog, I'm proud of myself and everyone deserves a chance to brag about something so that's exactly what I am going to do today.

My brags for today are:
  • Harley and I ran 5.5km (3.4miles) last night with an average pace of 5:20/km. I haven't ran that fast in a while! It must have been the dark ;)
  • Mr.D has been making some awesome meals lately! I haven't felt like cooking at all, and am so happy to have a husband who will cook instead.
  • I am Canadian and proud of it!
  • I mentioned it above, but I finally figured out how to kip my handstand pushups last night at CrossFit. It took a few tries and some direction, but I got it. Now I am addicted to doing it! {here is a video on how to do kipping handstand pushups}
  • I have some amazing family and friends (both in real life and on-line). I wouldn't trade them for the world.
  • I am running my 6th half marathon on Sunday! It's crazy to think just under two years ago, I could barely run 3k
Tell me: what do you want to brag about today? It can be anything!

These are my favourite things: work out edition

I've picked up a few new items lately that I use for working out and have had the chance to use them lately. I thought I'd share a few of them as I know I love hearing about new products/items.

I bought this on Saturday and wore it for the first time on Sunday for my long run of 18km. The weather was just above zero and I wore a tank top under it, and it was perfect for the weather. It would also be great in colder weather as a layering piece to keep you warm.  I really like the thumb holes and the half zip part of it.

Running Room ponytail toque

I was searching for a winter hat that had a spot for your ponytail and this is the perfect one. The link says it`s $29.99, but I paid $24.99 in store for it. I wore it on Sunday for my long run and it didn't move or irritate me at all.

Compression socks
I had never tried compression socks before, but Nicole kindly gave me a pair recently. I've worn them both on a long run and immediately after, and have noticed a difference in my legs. I think I would continue to notice them helping if I were to do longer runs of over 20kms.

Rogue tall socks
Alison kindly bought these for me for my birthday and I love them! They are perfect for CrossFit as they protect your shins when doing Olympic lifts or rope climbs.

Tell me: have you tried any new products for working out lately? If so, what do you recommend?

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend? The sun finally decided to make an appearance here yesterday, so all is well in my world again. Let's just hope that it decides to stay around for a while.

Highlights from my weekend:
  • I woke up not feeling good on Friday and ended up coming home from work early. I really don't want to be sick right now, so I decided some rest is what I needed. I ended up sleeping for over two hours in the afternoon and spent the rest of the day hanging around the house.
  • I was feeling a bit better on Saturday, so I took Harley for a walk in the morning and then ran to the mall to exchange some stuff.
  • I met up with Jen later in the afternoon for coffee, and had a fun talking about everything from blogging to exercising to weddings. Let's do it again Jen!
  • Before I met up with Jen, I stopped into a Running Room and somehow walked out with these. So bright, but only $60!

  • On Sunday, I had my last long run of 18km to do. Thank goodness it was sunny and gorgeous out compared to last weekend.
  • After my run, this happened and it was so delicious:

  • The rest of the day was spent cleaning the house and doing some baking. I made mini banana muffins that are way too easy to pop into my mouth.
Tell me: how was your weekend? What were you up to?

Halloween, WOD's and Christmas Swap

How is that for a random title of a blog post? So creative I know.

  • How was your Halloween? It was freezing cold and snowing here, so we didn't have too many kids. But then again, we don't normally have that many kids even though we live in suburbia. I dressed up as our CrossFit location had a contest for the best Halloween costume. I went as a redneck/white trash girl...the costume didn't last long because short shorts are NOT fun to work out in. Just in case you were wondering :)

  • The workout last night was also a tough one! It was Fight Gone Bad, which is:

3 rounds of time:
Sumo Deadlift High Pull
Box Jumps
Push Press
Row (calories)

Super tough workout even not with the required weight. Hopefully it doesn't come up again for a long time!

  • For those of you participating in the Christmas blog swap, I will be posting the partners tomorrow :) Keep your eye out for the post and I will also be sending out emails to everyone.
  •  The other night was super cold, so Harley and I had a little cuddle in front of the fireplace. A puppy cuddle makes everything better :)

Tell me: what's going on with your week? Did you get dressed up for Halloween?
