I confess....that I was the pickiest eater growing up. I can still be picky about somethings, but nothing compared to what I was when I was younger. The only things that I would eat growing up were: kraft dinner, chicken and diet coke. I am happy to say that I will now eat mushrooms, tomatoes, shrimp, fish, spaghetti sauce, etc. Though I can still be picky about somethings....like my peanut butter MUST be Kraft smooth. No other option!

Tell me: are you a picky eater or is there anything you are picky about?

Race report: Centaur Subaru Half Marathon

My fourth half marathon has come and gone, and it went by so quickly! I remember during the race thinking about how fast those ten weeks went and how fast the race was going.  Craziness.

Before the race

The race started at 7am, so we were up bright and early at 5am. That was enough time to get dressed, eat, feed the dog and make the drive downtown. We ended up parking downtown further away from the start and taking the C-train to the start, which worked out really well. It was a chilly morning out, so I was glad I wore a sweatshirt and sweat pants. I didn't have to use the bag drop as Mr.D and my mom's were with me.

My mom, myself and Mr.D
The race

The marathon and half marathon both started at 7am. At about 6:50am, I went into the starting area to line up, and it slowly but surely started to get very crowded. It was like everyone HAD to be at the front of the line and right that second. I had to remind myself to let the others do their own thing and that we had chips for a reason.

The course was brand new for this year, so I wasn't super sure what to expect. Parts of it were the same as last year, but there were way more twists and turns this year. I had forgotten that my Garmin was running out of  lap database room, so the whole race I was never able to see my times for each kilometer, which was a good and bad thing. At the race expo, I had picked up a 1:55 pace band so I was using that and my Garmin to keep me on track. The first 9km's of the race, I was running a 5:08/km pace, which was MUCH faster than I had trained and was a major mistake for going out that fast. Mr.D, my mom and my MIL ended up waiting on the side of the course between kilometer 8 and 9, which was a huge boost for me to see them unexpectedly. Shortly after that, my legs were slowly dying and my stomach was starting to act up.

For the rest of the race, I motivated myself to get to the turn around then 10th street then Edmonton Trail and so on. Anything to get my mind off the fact that my stomach was acting up and my hips and knees were starting to hurt. I don't know why, but the second half of the race was super tough mentally for me. I ended up taking more walking breaks through the water stations then I had planned, but it helped me reach the finish line.

The best part of the race? The finish line was in the Stampede grounds and you finished right in front of the grandstands. So many people there cheering you on and so awesome energy! My final chip time was 1:55:02......so damn close to my goal of sub 1:55!!!! Even though I didn't technically make my goal, I am happy to have run a new PR.... I took over 3 minutes off my time from last year and over two minutes off from the Victoria half marathon.

After the race

The only negative thing that I can think of about this race was that the finish line and food area was SO CROWDED! So many people were hanging out in the finishing shoot after receiving their medal, that things were starting to get really backed up. Mr.D said that before I came in, people had to stop before the finish line because it was that backed up. I ended up waiting at the very end of the finishing area to find Mr.D and my mom's and then went inside to grab some food. It was way too crazy for me, so we headed out and didn't grab any pancakes.

Minus the crowds at the beginning, the first few km's and the end of the race, it was a great race! Still wishing I could have fun faster for three seconds, but hey a PR, is a PR right?! Congratulations to everyone who ran the race as well!

4th half marathon done and done!

Just as my title says, my fourth half marathon has come and gone already! It didn't rain or snow, which was all I was hoping for. I missed my goal by 3 seconds, but it was still a good race.

Full recap will be coming tomorrow! :)

Hope you had a great weekend!

{happy friday}

Happy Friday everyone! For a short week, it sure felt really long! I think the constant downpour of rain didn't help either.

another awesome shot thanks to Whitney

This weekend, we are:

  • picking my mom up from the airport later tonight! So excited.
  • going to pick up my bib tomorrow afternoon
  • going out for a carb loading lunch/dinner after the race expo
  • HALF MARATHON on Sunday morning! Fingers crossed for good weather
  • pedicures with my mom on Monday possibly in Canmore
So excited to spend some time with my mom! Mr.D's mom might actually come down on Saturday to Sunday as well, which is fun. I am excited for it, but not sure if Mr.D knows what he's in for, haha.

Tell me: what do you have planned for your weekend? I hope you have a great weekend either way!

I pinned it, so I did it {part two}

Sometimes the motivation comes along to actually do one of the many ideas that I have pinned on Pinterest. Not often, but when it strikes it can be fun! You can find some the other projects that I've pinned and completed here.

First up, is a recipe that we tried a few weeks ago. It was so easy and so tasty! We will definitely be eating this one again.

The first DIY project that I did was this fun sign for our laundry room:

Here is how it turned out:

The project cost me only $2 for the sign. I had the clothes pins, black spray paint and white paint.

Next up, is a DIY gallery wall inspired by:

Here is how mine turned out:

I am not quite done it yet, as I am waiting on some pictures to be printed from Costco

I have a few more projects that I've been working on, but not quite done yet, so I'll do another post soon.

Tell me: is there any fun things you've made from Pinterest lately?

I confess....that I have recently started using a child's toothbrush instead of an adult one. Haha I realize how lame that sounds, but I promise I have a fair reason why I started! The last time that I was at the dentist, the hygienist suggested it as I have a small mouth and have troubles reaching my back molars with an adult sized toothbrush.  It just looks really funny because it's so much smaller than an adult one.

Tell me: do you use anything child sized instead of adult?

{weekend recap}

Happy Monday everyone! Today is extra awesome because I am still off of work and it means a day of sleeping in and doing whatever I want :)

{friday} We didn't do anything exciting except went to get some groceries and hung out around the house.

{saturday} I was up early to head out for my last long run, but it was still pretty chilly and windy so I decided to hold off to a little later in the morning. I ended up leaving around 10:15am for my run and it was much better!  19.2km done and done!

After my run, I headed home to shower and eat. Mr.D's parent's came in the afternoon and we spent the afternoon hanging out and doing a bit of shopping. Later on, we made a belated mother's day dinner for my MIL as we didn't get to spend it with her. The best part of the night? Putting on mud masks with my MIL and having a ball laughing at each other :)

{sunday} Before Mr.D's parent's headed home, we went out for breakfast. After they headed home, Mr.D and I ran some errands. In the afternoon, I started to do some spring cleaning which included finally cleaning our carpets, cleaning the windows, doing laundry, etc.  This cute face helped me all day :

I also started working on a Pinterest inspired craft. I am thinking I will do a post later this week with a few things that I've done from Pinterest or tried off of there.

Tell me: how was your weekend? What were you up to?

{happy friday}

Happy Friday everyone! Want to know the best part of this weekend? The fact that it's a long one! So excited to have an extra day off.

This weekend, we are:
  • having Mr.D's parent's for a visit on Saturday and Sunday
  • making his mom a belated mother's day dinner
  • going for my last long run of this training cycle
  • doing a few projects around the house
  • enjoying the day off on Monday!

And because no post is complete without a picture, here are some things I've pinned lately:

These are my confessions {V8}

Happy Wednesday everyone! My fingers are crossed that when I come home tonight that Harley hasn't left me another lovely present. Let's just say he left me a very gross present yesterday and would rather not have it again!

I confess....that I used to have the biggest crush on Sean Patrick Thomas. You know this guy:

 from Save The Last Dance. After seeing the movie, I wanted to be Julia Stiles so badly! I don't even know why I had the biggest crush on him, but I sure did! Mr.D still makes fun of me for it.

Tell me: did you ever have any random yet funny crushes when you were younger?

Training Tuesday

Another week down in my training! Only one more long run left and it's half marathon time! :)

A picture of me doing push presses at CrossFit
Monday: 4km walk with Harley and a CrossFit workout
WOD

4 rounds for time:
100m farmers walk {1pood KB}
100m broad jump
100m walking lunges
100m farmers walk {1 pood KB}

Tuesday: 6.25km run (5:07 pace) with Harley

Wednesday: rest

Thursday: 4km walk with Harley and CrossFit workout

WOD

3 rounds for time:
30 wall balls
20 SDLHP
10 OHS

Friday: 3.8km walk with Harley

Saturday: 7km hike in the coulee with Harley

Sunday: 18km run (5:49 pace). This was a terrible run for me! The first 10km were good as I was on pace, but shortly after that I fell apart. It was a really warm morning out and the heat totally got to me. My overall pace slowly slipped over the last 8km from 5:30/km to 5:49/km. I won't lie, I sat down in some shady grass with my head in my hands wishing my car was closer than 4km away.

I didn't get in all of my runs this week as my cousin was in town, but sometimes spending time with friends and family are better than exercising :)

Tell me: how was your week of workouts?

{weekend recap}

Do you ever have one of those weekends where you don't want it to end at all? That was my weekend....er four day weekend. The sun was shining (for most of it) and I got to spend time with my cousin/best friend....nothing beats that!

The highlights of my extended weekend:

- spending quality time with my cousin laughing and joking about very inappropriate things only her and I would find funny
-going shopping
- going to The Black Keys concert and sitting in the nosebleeds. Not being able to see the first two songs as kids in front of us were standing up. Being enveloped by the weed being smoked around us.
on our way to the concert

- making Pinterest inspired bracelets that turned out fantastic!
some of the bracelets

- taking Harley for a hike in the coulee
- introducing my cousin to a CrossFit class. She survived and said she enjoyed it :)
- sitting on the back deck enjoying the sunshine on Sunday

A blogger award

Happy Thursday everyone! I am off today and tomorrow as my cousin is flying into town early this morning. So looking forward to having a few days off of work and spending time with her.

The other day, I was awarded a blogging award by Nicole from Suddenly Snowden. She is another fabulous lady who enjoys CrossFit as much as I do and is going to be welcoming her first baby soon! Thanks Nicole for the award :)

So what is the Liebster Blog Award? Well Liebster is a German word meaning dearest or favorite and this award allows the recipient to share 5 of their favorite blogs that have 200 followers or less. We also get to share a little bit about ourselves along the way!

Here are the rules:
  • Thank your Liebster Blog Award presenter on your blog by mentioning them and linking back to their blog
  • Copy and paste the blog award and rules on your blog
  • Present the Liebster Blog Award to 5 blogs of 200 followers or less who you feel deserve to be noticed by linking them on your page
  • Let them know they have been chosen by leaving a comment at their blog
  • Share 5 random facts about yourself
I am nominating:

Nicole @ Haute Runner
Carly @ Rock the dogs

Five random things about myself:

1. I've been on a nude beach once and probably not again. It was when I was about 13 years old and was visiting my cousin. We took a trip to Hornby island and part of the beach there was a nude beach. That was quite the experience for us!

2. I have never watched the Star Wars movies or Star Strek series and have zero desire to do so!

3. I have the worst habit of falling asleep during movies that Mr.D picks out. We've attempted to watch Super Troopers twice and I've fallen asleep both times. Don't ask how mad Mr.D was!

4. I really want to run a marathon {someday}, but am too scared to sign up for one.

5. I have really small feet, but that might be because I am short. If you want to know, I have between size 5-6 depending on the shoes.

Tell me: something random about yourself that I might not know.

I confess....that I never wear underwear to work out in. That could possibly be way too much information for you guys to know, but sharing is caring right?! I personally find it uncomfortable to wear underwear whether it be a thong or full backs. I will risk a little camel toe in the name of comfort, haha. I was discussing this topic the other day with my cousin and she thought it was weird.

So tell me, do you wear underwear to work out in?

Training Tuesday

Is it bad that I have to go look at my daily mile each week to remember what I did the previous week? I can remember basically what days that I ran and what days that I went to CrossFit, but that's about it. Oh well, another week down and another week closer my half marathon!

Monday: 5km walk with Harley, Nike training ab and cardio workout. If you don't have the Nike training app for the iphone, download it now!

Tuesday:  4km walk with Harley and run. The run was:

1 mile warm up
8 x 400m {started at 2:06 and worked down to 1:51/400m}
.5 mile cool down

 I, for some odd reason really enjoy the 400m workouts!

Wednesday:  CrossFit workout

WOD

21-15-9-15-21
24" box jumps
SDLHP at 45lbs

Loved the box jumps, but not so much the SDLHP

Thursday: 5km run with Harley. Legs were dead tired this day!

Friday: rest

Saturday: 7km walk with Harley and tabata style CrossFit workout

WOD
20 seconds, 10 seconds off for 8 rounds

push ups
kettle bell swings
knees to elbows
push press

Sunday: 3.8km walk with Harley and 16km run in 1:28 with an average pace of 5:30/km. Overall, this run felt pretty good. My pace has definitely improved since my last training cycle and I don't feel like I am dying at the end of it either.

I know that I get plenty of runs and workouts in each week, but I feel guilty not working out each day. Is it just me or does anyone else feel guilty?

{weekend recap}

Does anyone else wish that it was Saturday today and not Monday? I could use one more day off....I really shouldn't complain too much as I am only working three days this week. Hopefully those days don't go by super slow.

{friday}
After work, Alison, Justin & Cruz came over for a dinner and puppy play date. We enjoyed a fabulous dinner and dessert while the dogs ripped around the backyard.  We also spent some time planning our roadtrip that we are going on in August. I wish it was August now!

{saturday}
Saturday morning was fabulous for one reason....an unexpected sleep in until 10:30am! I can't remember the last time that happened, but it was awesome. The terrible part of Saturday morning? The cold weather and snow that I woke up to. Not fun at all. I spent the morning cleaning around the house and then Mr.D and I went to CrossFit. Our location offers oepn gym times as a part of our membership fees, so we went in and did a tabata style workout. The workout was:

20 seconds on, 10 seconds off for 8 rounds

Knees to elbows
push ups
kettle bell swings
push press

The rest of the day was spent inside in the warmth and watching a movie.

{sunday}
In the morning, I went for my 16km training run and the weather luckily turned gorgeous. Only two more long runs and my half is here! After my run, I hung out in the backyard throwing the ball for Harley and enjoying the sunshine :)

 While I was writing this post last night, Mr.D asked me if I was blogging about our weekend and I said yes. He wanted me to make sure that I mentioned that he made amazing ribs, so now he better be reading this!

Tell me: how was your weekend? What were you up to?

Friday's letters

Happy Friday everyone! I am linking up with Ashley at Adventures of Newlyweds for her Friday's letters series.

Dear Friday, thank you for coming! So excited that it's finally the weekend. Dear blogging friends, I am so excited that lots of you have shown interest in a blogger meet up! Dear stomach, please settle down and be nice. I'm sick of you being all bubbly and yucky. Dear May, you are quite the exciting month for me! My cousin and mom visiting, running a half marathon and other fun things!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Calgary & area blogger meet up

I can't remember who I mentioned it to, but I thought it would be a fun idea to potentially organize a Calgary and area blogger meet up. I know that there are a bunch of different bloggers that have never met each other and thought it could be a fun idea for people to meet other bloggers.

 I haven't thought of any dates or locations yet, but was thinking if there was enough interest, we could do it for June or July at a restaurant in Calgary. If you would be interested or know another blogger who would be, leave a comment so I can get an idea of the number of people interested :)

Whitney posted some more pictures from our shoot last weekend, so I thought I'd post a couple more. Let me just say, I LOVE them!

Happy Thursday everyone!

These are my confessions {V6}

Another Wednesday, another round of confessions! Who is going to play along and confess something with me today?! I am thinking that I will make a button this weekend and if you want to play along, you can grab it next week.

Here are my previous confessions:

Too many hair products
Shaving my big toes
Must make the bed
Random chin hair

Zero patience

I confess....that I have a very small number of close friends and I am okay with that. Sometimes when I see other girls/women with lots of girlfriends, I think to myself how come I don't have more? But then I realize that I would rather a small number of close friends who know me well and would be there for me in a second. The funny thing about some of my closest friends is that they are either living in other provinces or those I met through this little blog of mine.

My cousin and one of my closest friends

Training Tuesday

Another week down and only three long runs left! That is crazy to me.

Last week wasn't my greatest week in terms of getting my runs in and going to CrossFit. We had a lot of things going on each night after work, so it cut into my normal schedule. But it meant spending time with friends that we don't get to see often, so it was worth it.

Monday: 6km walk with Harley

Tuesday: 3.2km walk with Harley and did a CrossFit style workout at home

5 rounds of:
400m run
5 sit ups
10 pushups
15 squats

Wednesday: ab workout and Nike training shoulders workout

Thursday: 10 minutes of P90X and 25 minutes of Jillian Michael's no more trouble zones

Friday: 5.4km run with Harley

Saturday: 5km walk with Harley, ab workout and a CrossFit class

WOD:
1  round for time:

50 back squats
40 pull ups
30 shoulder to overhead
50 front squats
40 pull ups
30 shoulder to overhead
50 overhead squats
40 pull ups
30 shoulder to overhead

This was one of the workouts from the CrossFit regionals and it was tough! Just when you think you are done, there is 50 more squats!

Sunday: 10km run

Tell me: how did your training go this week? Did you do any fun workouts?
