Friday's letters


Happy Friday everyone! So glad that this week is over and the long weekend is here :)


Dear Canada: happy birthday to you! Thank you for letting us celebrate you and giving us a long weekend. Dear sun: thank you for finally coming out even for a short time yesterday. Please stay around for the weekend, we miss you. Dear Mr.D: thank you for going for a bike ride for me with me last night even after you biked to and from work. Dear hairdresser: leaving me waiting 20 minutes for you last night with no word was not cool. I'm understanding, but not that patient. Dear blogging friends: I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Tell me a little something about yourself

Blogging day to day feels like I am ALWAYS telling you something about myself. Today, I've decided to do something a little different. I have a few questions for you my dear readers and would love to read your answers :)




1. If you could anything but your current job (no matter the pay), what would it be?
I think I would do something that either involved children or helping to bring babies into the world.


2. What is your greatest fear in life?
I think it would have to be either not being able to have children, not being able to say goodbye to a loved one before they passed or not succeeding personally.


3. What area of the country do you live in?
I currently live in beautiful Calgary, Alberta. If you love mountains, cowboys and random weather, come visit!

Here is my confession for the week:


I confess....I used Nair for the first time the other day and was surprised how well it worked! I think I might have tried it maybe ten years ago, but don't really remember the experience. Coming from someone who has waxed and shaven, I was curious to see how it would work. I will say that I was surprised that it tingled, but worked in the six minute time slot. I am curious to see how long it lasts for.

I workout

Ah what a clever title! Can you tell what this post is going to be about? ;)


Since I am not currently following a training plan (which I am loving by the way!), I thought I would recap some of my workouts recently.



Here is an easy workout to do at home that leaves you sweating!


50 bicycle crunches
50 plank jacks with tuck- (similar to the video, but I bring both knees up in the tuck part)
50 squats
50 lunges


I have done this workout a few times at home, and it takes me anywhere from 18-23 minutes and leaves me sweating.

I did this workout at CrossFit last week and it was killer:

10 rounds for time

30 seconds row for calories
30 seconds toes to bar

{weekend recap}

Another weekend come and gone....the one plus to this week? That next weekend is a three day weekend and I am so excited for it!

{friday} I stopped at the mall after work to do a little shopping, but didn't have too much luck. After the mall, I headed home and we spent the night hanging out at home.

{saturday} We were up bright and early to head to Mr.D's hometown to spend some time with his brother, SIL and niece before they move to NYC. It was a gorgeous day, so we headed out with Harley for a run in the river valley. We ended up running about 7km and were super sweaty when we got home! The rest of the afternoon was spent hanging outside with Mr.D's family enjoying the sunshine. Later, we headed out to dinner for Chinese food to a popular restaurant called Ling nan's. The family who owns the restaurant had a show on TV, so it was fun to visit the actual location.

{sunday} In the morning, we made a trip to Mr.D's grandpa's nursing home for breakfast with him and the family. After breakfast, we hung out for a little bit and then made the drive back home.  



Poor Harley hurt his paw pads on Saturday after catching the ball on some concrete :( We've wrapped both paws up pretty well, so hopefully they heal quickly.

Fitness bucket list

I have seen this floating around blogsphere and I had zero ideas for a post today, so I thought why not?Before I started running, I had made myself a 30 before 30 list and on the list was: run a 5k, 10k, half marathon, triathlon, etc. As a few of those things have been crossed off now, I've had to come up with new goals or wants.

Leigh's fitness bucket list


1. Run a sub 25 minute 5k
- a couple weeks ago I ran a 25 minute and change 5k by myself, so I know I can get there

2. Run a sub 50 minute 10k
- my 10k PR is 52:46, so with some training I might be able to get there


3. Run my first full marathon
- I was thinking about doing one this year, but decided I didn't want to put the training in right now. I might possibly do one next spring

4. Run a major marathon
- it could be anything from the Chicago marathon to the NYC marathon, etc. The bigger the better!

5. Do one unassisted pull up
- getting closer, but still need a little help with a skinny band at CrossFit

6. Do a kipping pull up

7. Do a handstand pushup
- I can do the handstand, but not the push up part!


8.  Run a relay race
- after reading all of the different recaps from bloggers, a relay race looks tiring but lots of fun if you have the right group of people

9. Do a muscle up
- I doubt that this will ever happen, but you never know!

I confess.....that I didn't have my first kiss until I was about 14 or 15. The only reason it happened was because a bunch of people found out that I hadn't kissed anyone yet, so they dared a guy and I to kiss. Ah, so mature! If you know me in real life, I don't think that this would surprise you because I am pretty quiet, so I was never the girl who did things for attention,etc. Oh and in case you were wondering, the kiss was nothing to write home about :)

What's next?

To all of those Calgary & area bloggers that are planning on coming to the blogger meet up, mark your calendars for Thursday July 19, 2012. I will be doing either a post or sending out an email with all of the details shortly :)

Now that my two planned half marathons for this year have come and gone, I am left wondering what's next? Do I want to run another half marathon or two in the fall? If so, what ones? Or do I want to do some short races? Or do I want to just casually run and focus more on CrossFit? 

If I were to run another half marathon this year, I want to run a race that I haven't done yet. There are a few that I am looking at: 

Edmonton half marathon: August 19, 2012
Dinosaur half marathon: September 9, 2012
St. Albert fall challenge: September 23, 2012
Harvest half marathon: September 29, 2012
Spank the panc 21K: October 20, 2012
Last chance half marathon: November 11, 2012

Has any local bloggers/runners run any of these races? Any that I should do or stay away from? 

I know that I will continue with CrossFit, but sometimes I wonder how strong, fit, fast I could become if that was all I did and really focused on my WOD's. I doubt that I would ever become strong enough to compete in the open's, but I do know I have little goals I would like to achieve...doing an unassisted pull up, a handstand push up, etc.

In the short term, Mr.D and I might run a pet oriented 5K run this Sunday. I came across it today and it's geared towards running with your dog, so that might be fun to do together with Harley. 

Tell me: what should I do?! Run another half marathon (or two) or stick to shorter races? Have you ran any of the races that I mentioned above?

{weekend recap}

Oh Monday or should it be called Moan-day? Nothing good ever happens on Monday's. Onward and upward!


This weekend, we:

  • took Harley for a walk on Friday night around the reservoir near our house. Someone saw ducks sitting in the middle of the water and decided it would be fun to go for a swim! It was quite funny to watch and don't worry, he made it back to land safely :)
  • ran to Rona for some supplies for a DIY project

  • after the WOD, we showered and headed out to Banff to see Mr.D's family who were spending the weekend out there. It was such a windy day, but great to see everyone.



  • Sunday was spent cleaning the house, mowing the grass and working on my DIY project. Can't wait to be done it, so I can show you!

Dear blogging friends: I hate to say sorry, but sorry that I've been a crappy blogger this week. Work was kicking my butt and I had no desire to blog. Dear weekend: I am so, so glad that you are here! Please make the rain go away, so we can enjoy a day trip to Banff. Dear Calgary & area bloggers: I am waiting on a couple more responses regarding dates, but plan on doing a post next week with all of the details. Keep your eye out and your calendar free! Dear CrossFit: sorry that I neglected you during half marathon training, but I am so excited to get back into you and do some kick butt WOD's!

Race report: Footstock half marathon

As I mentioned yesterday, I went to the expo on Friday night to pick up my race package. I got there around 6pm and there were no line ups at all. It might have helped that this was a small race (about 180 people for the half marathon). The race package included: the race number, a t-shirt and a wrap thing that you can wear multiple ways.

I arrived at the race start around 7am for a 8am race start. The only reason that I arrived so early was because I was worried about parking, but getting there early meant lots of options! After parking, I made a trip to the bathroom and then hung out in my car until about 20 minutes before the race start (Mr.D was out of town and I didn't know anyone running the race). It was raining that morning, so luckily I was able to hang out inside the sports complex until the race start. About 5 minutes before the start, we started to line up, O Canada was sung and it was go time!

If anyone comes across my race recap and is thinking about running this half, be prepared for hills and gravel! The first kilometer took us onto some grass, paved pathways and then shortly onto the red shale. The following five kilometers had us running on the pathways and dodging LOTS of puddles due to the rain the night before and during the race. 


Around kilometer six, we turned a corner and THE hill came into view. If you have done hill training it might not be terrible for you, but because I haven't this hill was killer. The hill is over a kilometer and then it's onto the road for a short section and then onto a gravel country road for two kilometers out and back. Those were the absolute worst kilometers for me due to the rain and wind in your face. Not to mention the fact that the gravel roads were so wet from all of the rain we had been getting.

At the turn around, there were two more kilometers on the gravel roads and then it was time to go flying back down the big hill! That was the best part of the race :) The rest of the race was going back on the pathways that we ran out on and more dodging of puddles.

Rounding the last corner and crossing the finish line never felt so good! My final time was 2:01...definitely not my best race, but it's another half marathon under my belt. {sorry Paula for not posting my results on twitter, haha}

Overall thoughts of the race


- I didn't mention this earlier, but the aid stations were the best that I've ever had! You could hear them cheering way before you ever saw them. And a big kudous to them for standing in the rain the whole time!
- a fun race if you are looking for a smaller race
- an awesome pancake breakfast after the race
- a nice run outside of the big city 
- worst parts: the big hill, gravel and the rain that came this year
- a fun medal makes it all worth it though right?!

{weekend recap}

Happy Monday everyone! This weekend was full of running, rain, wind and family. An odd combination I know, but it was a great weekend.


{friday} Mr.D had gone to his hometown for a graduation party for his friend from fire fighting school, so it was just Harley and I for the night. I had to pick up my race package, so I headed out shortly after I got home from work to pick it up. There was no line ups and the expo was very small, so I didn't stay around after getting my race package. Once I got home, the rest of the night was getting my stuff together and doing laundry. I know how to have fun on a Friday night!!  And just for fun, a picture of my hair on Friday....I was loving it :)


{saturday} I was up bright and early for the race, which I'll do a recap of tomorrow. After the race, I spent the afternoon hanging out on the couch and took Harley for a walk in the afternoon.  Mr.D got home in the late afternoon, so we went out and grabbed some dinner.




{sunday} Mr.D's brother, his wife and our niece were in town, so we met up with them for a brunch and to spend time with them before they leave for NYC in a couple weeks. Our niece has grown so much and it was fun to see them. The rest of the day was spent cleaning the house and getting groceries. Ah the life of grown-ups!

Three Things Thursday

Well hello there Thursday! You are almost as good as Friday....almost, not quite. 


{one} Last night, I went to a CrossFit class with Carly from Rock the dogs who was in town on vacation. It was fun to do the WOD with someone else and it was great meeting you Carly! :)


{two} Has anyone been watching this season of the Real Housewives of Vancouver? It's your typical real housewives style, meaning there is LOTS of drama. But that makes the show better right? I just can't stand Jodie. She is so stuck up and annoying! Plus who wears sun glasses everywhere they go including indoors?!


{three} Did I mention that I am running a half marathon this weekend? Gah, who signed me up for this?! I am thinking I might just have fun in the race and enjoy it. Hopefully the rain stays away!

I confess....I grew up in a small country town where there was no stop lights and I went to school with Mennonites yet I hate country music. So not typical of a small town girl! If this is going to be a true confession, I must confess that there are two country songs that I do like. They are:





I don't know why these are the only two country songs that I like, but they are.

{weekend recap}: the weekend that camping wasn't

Oh Monday, you came too soon yet again. I sure wasn't ready to see you yet. Hm, the best way to describe this weekend? Wet and tiring!


{friday} I took the afternoon off on Friday and on my way home, I stopped at CrossFit for a quick workout. Felt good to be doing the workout, but it left my back feeling less than stellar. After my workout, I headed home to shower and finish packing everything up for our camping trip to Fernie. Around 4pm, Alison, Justin & Cruz came to our house and we were off to Fernie. 




The skies were not looking too promising as we neared Fernie, but our fingers were crossed that it would clear and no rain would come.


{saturday} Let's just say the rain did not stay away for long. It started around 1am, but by the time we got up around 8am, our tent was slowly leaking from the downpour. I definitely was a very unhappy camper with the amount of rain, but luckily everyone was in agreement to pack it up and head home.

We ended up getting home around 2pm, and proceeded to do nothing except laundry and nap for the rest of the day. My back was still killing, so I spent a lot of the night foam rolling and putting Rub-A-35 on my back. Thankfully it started feeling a lot better.


{sunday} Mr.D and Justin were off for a bike ride as they missed their chance in Fernie. After they left, Harley and I went out for a run. The rest of the morning and early afternoon was spent mowing the lawn, laundry and vacuuming the house. In the late afternoon, Alison and Cruz came over and we had a BBQ to make up for the one we missed on Saturday night.


While the weather definitely put a damper on our weekend, it was still nice to have some time at home to relax and spend time with friends :)

Dear weekend, thank you for coming. I am looking forward to getting away to the mountains for some camping and spending time with friends! Dear weather, please stay sunny and warm. I don't mind if it's a little cold, but please keep the rain away. Dear legs, thank you for letting me go for a run tonight. I promise to roll you and take care of you before the next half marathon. Dear friends, don't let me sign up for another half marathon until after my upcoming half.  Dear Lisa, good luck on your test tomorrow! You will kick it's butt and you are so ready for it!
