DIY herringbone art

The other weekend, I was looking around on Pinterest and found an idea that I knew I could easily do myself. I have also been wanting something to go over our bed as it's been empty since we bought the house and knew that this would work perfectly. So it was off to Michael's to gather my supplies and start this project {this was the tutorial that I found and based mine off of}

  • canvas in your choice of size
  • paint
  • paint brushes
  • painters tape
  • spray paint

1. Gather all of your supplies and get ready to start painting your canvas

2. I had no rhyme or reason to how I painted my canvas but knew that I wanted lines to run up and down the canvas with the different colours. Just keep painting until your canvas is covered

3. Once your canvas is painted and has had time to dry, start making the herringbone pattern with the painters tape. No particular method to this either besides trying to keep the space between the tape pieces the same.

4. Once you have all of your taping done, you can spray paint your canvas. I used metallic spray paint and one coat was enough.
5. Once the spray paint has fully dried, start peeling off the taping. Best part of the whole process :)

I did this project over a couple of days, but it could easily be done in an afternoon. It was under $30 to make and I like how it turned out. Now to hang it up in our bedroom :)

Run for L'Arche half marathon: race report

Race day has come and gone, and I am sad! I really enjoyed this race and can't wait for next years race :)

The race didn't start until 10am out of Eau Claire, so I had lots of time to sleep in, get my stuff ready and head downtown. My friend Erica {hi Erica!} are training together, so we decided we would run this race together. We decided that if one person felt like they could speed up, they were more than welcome to go ahead. Erica and I live in the same neighbourhood, so she picked me up around 9am and we headed downtown. We had a warm up of two kms to do, so we took off and did that before the race begin. It left us just enough time to make a quick bathroom break and we were off to the starting line!

The race was an out and back with a couple crossings under bridges {at 10th street and Crowchild Trail}. It started at Eau Claire and headed west past Shouldice Park to the turn around {you can find the course map here} and then straight back to Eau Claire. These pathways are pretty flat, so there were no big hills to conquer. There was a few really ice covered sections by Shouldice Park, but other than that the pathways were in perfect condition. It was also a really sunny day, but the wind was a bit chilly.

I started having knee pain around 12-14kms into the race, which I haven't had in a long time. I was so glad to have Erica by my side talking to me and helping me keep my mind off of the pain. It definitely made the kilometres go by quicker when you are not running alone!

The best part of the race would definitely have to be the fabulous volunteers who were out in the chilly weather cheering us on along the course. Everyone we came across was cheering and yelling for us. It was awesome! 

Erica and I had decided earlier in the week that our goal for the race was to finish in under two hours and we managed just that. Both of our finishing times were 1:59:00! We crossed the finish line, grabbed our medals and water, and met up with Mr.D who had brought Harley with him to watch us finish. I had a few kilometers to run after the race, so I grabbed Harley and we set off to finish them. Erica grabbed some pancakes, which I missed out on!

A big thank you goes out to Vern, Dawn and Don who worked extremely hard to organize this race and did a fantastic job at that! I also wanted to say thank you to them for letting me be part of this race...I loved the experience and can't wait for next year! I also owe a big thank you to Erica for staying with me the entire race, as I was struggling near the end and wouldn't have made it without her :)

Well race day has come and gone, but I thought I would recap my final week of training leading up to the half marathon. My full race report of the half marathon will be up tomorrow :)

Monday 3/18

  • 6.63km run {5:16/km avg pace} with Harley
Wednesday 3/20
  • 5.0km run {5:02/km avg pace}. The weather was too gorgeous to pass up this day!
Thursday 3/21
  • 4.5km walk with Harley
Friday 3/22
  • rest
Saturday 3/23- RACE DAY!
  • 2.0km warm up
  • 21.1km run {5:37/km avg pace} and finished in 1:59:00
  • 4.6km cook down with Harley
Sunday 3/24
  • 7.58km walk with Harley

Running:  39.0 kms
Walking: 16.0 kms

Overall, another great week of training. I was feeling pretty tired by the end of the week, which is why I took Friday as a total rest day and cut back on CrossFit. Sometimes the body just needs some rest.

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! Besides the bit of chill in the air, it was a gorgeous weekend. The sun was out the entire time and I loved it!

Sunday was a lazy day, so I took Harley for a long walk in the sunshine. Also made some cookies and banana muffins. I love lazy Sundays!

Fabulous Friday

Happy Friday everyone! This week has felt super long, so I am glad that the weekend is here. 

Let's talk about the fabulous parts of this week:
  • the gorgeous weather we had on Wednesday. It was +12C with lots of sunshine. If only it stayed around :(
  • two great runs this week
  • managing to do a workout with unassisted pull ups on Monday for the first time ever. Oh and I managed to do 90 of them!
  • working on a fun DIY project. Only a couple more steps and it's all done then I'll share it with you :)
  • looking forward to running the Run for L'Arche half marathon this weekend

Recent Reads

Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler

I started this book a bit ago, but wasn't in the reading frame of mind, so it sat unfinished for awhile. I recently picked it up again and finished it in just over a night. I really enjoyed this for being a young adult book.

In Flight by R.K Lilley {book #1}

This book series remind me a little bit of the 50 Shades of Grey series. It has the rich, sexual man who pursues an innocent younger girl. If you don't mind sex, then read this series :) Otherwise, skip it.

Run for L'Arche: training week nine

Another week of training is done! It's crazy to think that Saturday is race day. Fingers crossed that the weather is much better than this weekend. I will take the cold, but just no snow and wind please :)

I think for the first time ever, I am not setting a time goal for myself for the race. The main reason is that I am just hoping to have a good time, finish with a smile and am using it as part of my training for a full marathon. I haven't talked much about it on here, as it was a last minute decision. I am excited to run it with a couple of friends and of course get a medal at the end :)

Monday 3/11
  • 5.2km walk with Harley

Tuesday 3/12
  • 5.37km run {4:56/km avg pace} at lunch. This was a beyond fantastic run!
  • 4.38km walk with Harley
Wednesday 3/13
  • CrossFit workout that was:

15 Overhead squats at 55lbs

Thursday 3/14
  • 4.2km walk with Haley
  • Nike training club shoulder workout

  • 26km run {5:41/km avg pace} by myself in the wind and snow. The last 5kms were especially tough which involved lots of walking, but I am glad that I finished

  • 4.2km walk with Harley 

Running: 34kms
Walking: 18kms

My total kilometers for running was a bit lower this week because of the CrossFit workout on Wednesday. My legs were so dead from the OHS that I choose to skip my run on Thursday.

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! I wasn't quite ready for the weekend to be over. One more full week of work and then two short weeks because of Easter. Can't wait!

  1. Mr.D and I went out for dinner to The Keg on Saturday night
  2. The weather when I started my run on Saturday
  3. The weather when I finished over two hours later. Let's just say it wasn't a great run weather wise
  4. Total distance run on Saturday. Well, it was actually 26kms but I accidentally forgot to start it again at one part of the run
  5. I started working on DIY project on Sunday
  6. The wonderful faces Mr.D makes when I ask him for a nice picture
Other than that, we didn't do much else. I had a wonderful nap on Sunday and got some groceries. Pretty laid back weekend, which was perfect.

Fabulous Friday

Happy Friday everyone! So glad that it's finally the weekend. How about you? 

Let's talk about the fabulous parts of this week:
  • an amazing run on Tuesday at lunch. My average pace for 5.4kms was 4:56/km, which is smoking fast for me. Not sure what came over me, but I'll take it!
  • the gorgeous weather and sunshine we had on Thursday. It was +12C out, which is great for this time of year
  • an awesome CrossFit workout on Wednesday night
  • a delicious new recipe that I made last night
We don't have much planned for the weekend. I have to do my long run and hoping to pick up some stuff to start a couple DIY projects.

A letter from Harley

Dear mom:

This letter is way overdue! I really should have wrote it oh about two weeks ago when dad was out of town and I left you know a nice surprise to come home to on Friday night. But, I saw a bird and then got barking at the neighbour's dogs and totally forget. Anyways, back on track I go.

I just want to say that I am really, really, really sorry mom. I just couldn't hold it and I knew you weren't going to be happy. I can't blame you, walking in the door and smelling sh*t would not be fun for me either. If it makes you feel any better, I had to cuddle in the corner and not on my bed all day since it was covered to my special treat. 

But, since you rubbed my belly and made me white rice, I know you still love me. I do want to remind you of a few embarrassing things you've made me do:

Run for L'Arche: training week eight

Race day is inching closer and closer, and I am getting excited for it! My fingers are crossed that the weather cooperates. 

Monday 3/4
  • 4.3km walk with Harley
  • CrossFit workout
Tuesday 3/5
  • 5.45km run {6:13/km pace} at lunch. This was not a good run at all! My body and head were not cooperating with me
  • 4.3km walk with Harley
Wednesday 3/6
  • Nike training shoulders and ab workout. If you don't have this free app on your iphone yet, I highly suggest it! There are some great at home workouts that vary in length.
Thursday 3/7
  • 8.17km run {5:32/km pace} at lunch with Dawn and Don, who are part of the Run for L'Arche organizing team. It was great to finally meet them and luckily, they slowed their speedy pace down for me :)
  • 4km walk with Harley
Friday 3/8
  • 4.4km walk with Harley
Saturday 3/9
  • 22.4km run {5:27/km pace}. I was struggling near the end of the run with motivation, but a few short untimed walk breaks helped me continue on.
Sunday 3/10
  • 5.5km walk with Harley
  • Nike training core crunch workout
Running: 36kms
Walking: 22kms

Overall, another great week of training.

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend? The sun was finally shining here, which was beyond fabulous. I would take sunshine any day of the week.

Let's see what we were up to this weekend:

1. Harley enjoyed the sunshine and hoped to spot a dog or person to bark at
2. I ran 14 miles on Saturday in the sunshine. My running partner Erica was busy kicking butt in the CrossFit open, so I had to run alone.
3. It was amazing to see the sun shine in our house this weekend
4. Someone was staring at me while I did a ab workout on Sunday
5. My awesome socks that I wore on my run 
6. Alison & Justin (& Cruz) came over for dinner on Saturday night. It was a relaxed night while the dogs played. Perfection!

Other than that, I met up with a friend {Hi Kimberly!} for lunch on Sunday and spent lots of time reading. Perfect weekend.

Fabulous Friday

Thank goodness that Friday is finally here! This week felt super long for some reason. The snow has finally stopped here and the sun is shining, so no complaining from me!

Let's talk about some fabulous parts of this week:

  • I had some great workouts this week {to the person who found my blog by searching workout obsessed, you are correct}
  • I had a chance to meet and run with Dawn and Don who are part of the Run for L'Arche team yesterday. Maybe one day I will be as speedy as them :)
  • I came downstairs this morning to pack my lunch and Mr.D complimented me on my outfit. It's nothing special, but still feels nice to know that my husband checks me out :)
  • My weight has finally budged after keeping track of what I have been eating. The toughest days for me are after my long run because I just.can't.stop.eating.

The misadventures of Leigh & Mr.D

I am the first to admit that I am a pretty boring person and was never arrested, went streaking, etc, but I do have a good story for you. This story is from May of 2008 when I moved to Alberta to be with my then boyfriend Mr.D. My mom and I had driven from Ontario a couple days before and she was getting ready to leave later in the day to fly back to Ontario.
Mr.D was still in school at this time, so he had driven to a c-train lot that was near the football stadium in Edmonton and took the train to school. Meanwhile, my mom and I were hanging out waiting for Mr.D to be done classes. All of the sudden, my phone starts ringing and it's Mr.D calling to let me know that he had was back at the parking lot and his truck was no where to be found. I suggested that he call the towing company in case they towed it for some add reason, but no luck. So, he decided to walk over to the parking spot he was in, but didn't spot any glass on the ground. At this point, we figured someone had helped themselves to his truck. I think the best part is that his truck was a 1994 S10 that he had bought off of his grandpa. It was pretty sweet! It looked similar to this:

After picking Mr.D up from the train station, we headed to the airport to say goodbye to my mom. I think she was nervous leaving me in this big city where sweet trucks are stolen.

After the airport, we headed to a cop shop to report Mr.D's truck as stolen. Since we were close to his parent's house, we decided to head back there to play a little Wii bowling. A couple hours later, we decided to head back to our place in St.Albert. As we were driving down the Yellowhead, Mr.D looks over and all of the sudden yells out "that's my truck!". After getting over our shock of actually spotting his stolen truck in the city, I quickly speed up to get behind the truck while Mr.D calls 911. The young kid driving the truck quickly caught on that we knew the truck was stolen, so he takes off really fast trying to lose us. Unfortunately for him, it's getting close to rush hour and he choose the wrong road to turn onto. Meanwhile, Mr.D is still on the phone with the police who tell us not to approach the truck and pull off on a side street so they can apprehend the driver. We do as we are told and can hear the police chopper circling above us. Five minutes then ten minutes then twenty minutes go by with no word from the cops, and we are starting to get really worried. Finally, a cop comes by to tell us that they were able to stop the suspect and get the truck back, and for us to head to a nearby cop shop so we can get Mr.D's truck back.

After waiting a while for the police to tow his truck to the cop shop, it finally shows up. Unfortunately, the suspect decided to run into a police cruiser, so it wasn't looking so pretty. 

So, that's the totally random story of how Mr.D had his truck stolen, we saw it, we chased it and had it returned to him all in the same day. It was seriously crazy!

Run for L'Arche: training week seven

Another week of training is done! This week was great weather wise minus Sunday of course. I am so glad that I decided to do my long run on Saturday when there was no snow and the pathways were clear. This week, I did my long run with my friend Erica {hi Erica!} and it's amazing how much faster the time and distance goes by. We are hoping to run together again this weekend, so fingers crossed we can.

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone!  I had a perfect weekend that included no plans and lots of relaxation.
 Mr.D was out of town, so it was just Harley and I.

 1. The crazy amount of snow we got on Sunday
2. Harley and I went to throw the ball on Saturday while it was still gorgeous
3. My hat was covered after shoveling on Sunday

1. My favorite easy dinner
2. Watched Pitch Perfect for the third time on Friday night
3. Crazy Harley chewing on his bone

Other than that, I went for a 12 mile run with Erica on Saturday and a CrossFit workout on Sunday. It was crazy snowy on Sunday, so I spent the day around the house cleaning and watching tv.
