Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! This weekend just flew by and I'm not ready for Monday again.

{friday} I got home and took Harley for a long walk. The rest of the night was spent putting new music on my ipod and watching The Purge with Mr.D

{saturday} we were up bright and early for Melissa's Race, which took place in Banff. Full recap of the race coming tomorrow :) After our race, we drove back to Calgary. Friends from Edmonton were coming into town, so they arrived around 4pm. We hung out for a bit and then went out to dinner at Fergus & Bix. After dinner, we headed back to our house and had a bit of a late night. I'm not cut out for those anymore!

{sunday} after a big of a sleep in, we got up and made breakfast for everyone. Our friends all left around 12pm, so Mr.D and I quickly hopped back into bed for a nap. I spent the afternoon finishing the Sea of Tranquility {best book I've read in a while!}, getting some groceries, baking broccoli soup and banana muffins.

Five on Friday

Happy Friday everyone! The sun is supposed to come out again today and it's supposed to be warm(er) again, so I am glad it's Friday.

{one} I found a great wooden side table on Kijiji the other day and am hoping to repaint it, but I have no idea where to start. Does anyone have any experience or helpful hints? This is what I am hoping it comes out like:

{two} Fall tv is back and is awesome! That is all.

{three} Random question- would you use someone else's tooth brush whether it be a friend, boyfriend, husband, etc? I've definitely used Mr.D's in a pinch, but can't say that I would use a friend's toothbrush. That's just a little too much for me.

{four} Mr.D is running his first half marathon on Saturday and I am excited for him! He's probably going to kick my ass. Fingers crossed for nice weather in the mountains on Saturday.

{five} Things I will never "like" on Instagram:

  • your daily workout selfie
  • pictures of food unless it's a delicious looking brownie or ice cold Diet Coke
  • pictures with a million and one useless hashtags
  • your almost daily picture of your Garmin, Polar heart rate monitor, etc

My fellow lady runners

After my race on Saturday, a few things came to mind that I really need to talk to my fellow lady runners about.

{one} over the shoulder bolder holders

Please, please, please invest money into a supportive sport bra. I've noticed multiple women that were almost getting black eyes from running and all I could think of was how sore their ladies must be after a run. I am not a large chested women (usually between a B or C) and I love support! It also means one less thing to think about while running.

{two} coloured tights

Don't get me wrong on this one, I love the coloured tights trend, but I think they are better for yoga, strength training, step class, etc rather than running long distance. This point comes about after seeing a girl with some very noticeable sweat marks in a terrible location after a half marathon. Sure, she could have been a really sweaty runner, but a good pair of black tights or shorts will solve this problem.

 {three} VPL (aka visible panty lines)

I will admit that I am a commando working out/running type of person, which I know isn't for everyone. But I cringe when I see terrible panty lines giving ladies a terrible lump on their butt while running. A thong or no undies will solve that problem for you :)

This isn't meant to be a negative post towards lady runners....I say good for you for getting out there and running! It's not easy to start, but so worth it once you get into it!

MEC race #6: race report

I can't even remember when I signed up this race, but you can't beat $15 for a race! Plus I had never run a 15km race and it worked perfectly for my half marathon training, so I figured why not :)

On Saturday morning, I was up just after 7am to get ready and make my way down south for the race start. The race was scheduled to start just after 9am and started in Fish Creek Park (by Sikome Lake), which meant a 40 minute drive for me {side note- it's crazy that you can drive for 40 minutes and still be in the city!}. I ended up getting to the race start around 8:30am and hung out in my car as it was chilly. The race ended up being delayed because the porto potties were late to arrive, so they let everyone have a chance to use them. Before I knew it, I was lining up with all of the 15k runners and we were off!

The race was an out and back within Fish Creek Park. I had never run in that area before and I will definitely be back! There was about 100 people who ran the 15k, so it definitely thinned out in parts. I was using this race as a training run, so I tried to keep it steady and finish under 5:45/km avg pace. I ended up finishing in 1:26:06 (average pace of 5:42/km) and was pretty happy with that!

Since the race is only $15, it is pretty no frills. But they do have chip timing, which is great! If you are looking for a no frills and cheap race, there are still two more races this year (one in October and one in November). Check out the MEC website for more information :)

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! Do you know what today is? It's this pretty lady's birthday :) Make sure you stop by and say happy birthday! :)

Our weekend was pretty laid back and that was perfect. We:
  • Mr.D went biking on Friday afternoon, so Harley and I went for a long walk and then hung out watching The Blind Side
  • I ran the MEC 15km race...full recap to come tomorrow
  • a quick trip to IKEA for a few things
  • a Saturday afternoon nap
  • more biking for Mr.D on Sunday with Justin
  • hanging out and girl chats with Alison in the sunshine 
  • lots of cleaning of the house and baking cookies

Five on Friday

Ah, the day that everyone works towards...Friday! Nothing beats knowing you don't have to go to work for two days. Here are my five things on this wonderful Friday:

{one} I went for a massage on my lunch hour on Tuesday and it was so good! Definitely worth giving up my lunch hour for that.

{two} I'm running my first race since my marathon in May tomorrow and am kind of nervous for it! Not to mention it's a 15km race and I've never raced that distance. Oh and did I mention that I'm running a half marathon the next two weekends? Maybe I signed up for too many races.

{three} Mr.D always asks for a birthday list so he knows what I actually want, but I'm struggling to think of stuff this year. What would you put on your birthday list? Any good ideas for me?

{four} If you haven't been watching a show called The League, get on it! It's honestly one of the funniest shows I've watched in a long time!

{five} Do you know what drives me insane about having long hair? Not the amount of time it takes me to do it, but rather how much hair gets stuck in my butt crack after a shower. Am I doing something wrong or does this happen to other people?!

Europe 2013: Positano

Cinque Terre 

My last and final recap of our trip is finally here and it was my favourite place of the whole trip! Just to warn you, it may be a long recap because Positano was amazing and there is so much to tell you about :)

After spending a couple of days in La Spezia, we picked up a rental car and made the six hour drive to Salerno, which in the south of Italy along the Amalfi Coast. The drive was pretty uneventful once we received a working GPS from the rental company and went by pretty quickly (well, for me at least as I got to nap!). Once we arrived in Salerno, we dropped the car off and walked across the street to the water ferry. We had a bit of time to kill, so we grabbed a cold beverage as it was smoking hot!

The ferry ride was about an hour with a stop in Amalfi and the views were gorgeous!

Once we arrived in Positano, we attempted to catch the city bus that comes only once an hour. With our big backpacks and being tired from traveling all day, we decided to splurge and take a taxi to our b&b. Best 40 Euros we spent! (the cab and bus ride is about 30 minutes from the town centre to where we stayed). We stayed at the Colle dell'Ara b&b and it was beyond gorgeous! It is set back in from the road, and you have to climb about 130 steps to reach the facilities, but it is so worth it once you see the views! It is a family run place and they've set up a pulley system for your bags, so don't worry about carrying them :)

That night, the family was putting on a dinner with fresh ingredients from their gardens which surround the b&b. I think there was 3-4 courses and everything was so tasty, fresh and good! 

We decided that while we were in Positano, we didn't feel like doing any traveling around (thought about going to Capri) but that we would take two days to relax and hang out on the beach. Best decision we made! The first beach day, we decided to walk the 1600(!!!) steps from the b&b to the beach and that was quite the trek! The views were so worth it though.

Both days we rented loungers on the beach (about 14 Euros for the two loungers + umbrella) and enjoyed the sunshine, reading our books and swam in the water. And Mr.D enjoyed some beers in there too :)
  On our last night in Positano, we went to a restaurant that was a two minute walk from our bnb called La Tagliata, which was a family run smaller restaurant. They have no set menu and just make a different menu each night. Let me just tell you about this meal!! There was three courses plus dessert and wine, and I've never been so full in my life. The first course had seven different small appetizers, the second course had four different types of pasta, and the third course EIGHT different types of meat plus salad and fries. Oh and dessert was three different types of cakes (tiramisu, grandma's cake and fruit cake) plus fresh fruit and a chaser of limoncello. We honestly loved every dish that came out and kept looking at each other like "crap, there's more food?!" We had no idea how we kept putting more in our bellies. The other awesome thing about this place? We went in not knowing how much it was going to cost, so we both guessed around 45-50 Euros per person and it was only 35 Euros per person!! Such a great price for so much fantastic food! After the meal, we had to waddle and roll ourselves back to the bnb.

If you ever get a chance to visit Positano, it does not disappoint! It was my personal piece of heaven and I would return in a heart beat! The bnb was fabulous and run by a great family. The only downside is that it does take a 30 minute bus ride to get there, but once you arrive, the views will blow you away. Plus it was so nice to be away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds. Positano definitely stole a piece of my heart!

I am one of those people who loving workout and sweating, and feel strange when I don't workout. The combination of endorphins, hard work and sweat...just can't beat it! Now, onto my workout from last week.

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! I had a pretty good weekend....let's see what we were up to:

{friday} Mr.D had gone biking with Justin, so I took Harley for a walk and then went to Target. If anyone needs some cute summer sandals, they had lots on sale at the Westhills location. I picked up a gold pair for $4.50!

{saturday} in the morning, I took Harley for a walk and then got started on putting another coat of stain on the deck. It only took me about an hour, but it looks much better now. After staining the deck, I did a quick workout in the garage and then showered and got ready for girls dinner. Alison, Nicole, Lindsey, Becky (and Liam!) and myself met up dinner. We missed the girls who were sick or out of town though! :) It was fun to catch up with the girls before all of the babies come.

{sunday} in the morning, I headed out for my long run and I ended running running just over 17kms and felt pretty good! After my run, I stopped at McDonald's for an ice cream cone, which I had been craving forever! The afternoon was spent mowing the lawn, getting groceries and taking a nap.

Five on Friday

Happy Friday everyone! I've had some crappy sleeps this week, so I am very ready for the weekend! Here's my five things for this beautiful Friday {in Calgary at least!}:

{one} holy season opener of Sons of Anarchy batman! So many things happening and questions left unanswered! Is the little boy supposed to be Jax's son? What the heck is going on with that marshal? Can't wait to see how this season unfolds!

{two} I bought a kettle bell last night, so I decided to come up with a workout and it was a good one! Took me just under 20 minutes to complete the four rounds, but I was sweating by the end!

{three} I am toying with the idea of eating paleo for a month to try it out, but have no idea where to start for information. Anyone have any good links, websites or blogs for me to check out?

{four} the weather has been beyond gorgeous here lately for September! I am not complaining at all because the rain is supposed to come next week and the dreaded S word is not too far off.

{five} what do you think about people throwing their bagged dog poop out in someone's personal garbage bin? As a dog owner, I am totally against this because I wouldn't want someones dog poop in my garbage bin. But I guess it's better than that person just leaving it on the ground. Thoughts?

Europe 2013: Cinque Terre

After our disappointing time in Rome, we headed to the train station to head to La Spezia. The train ride was about 4 hours, but went by pretty quickly. Once we arrived in La Spezia, it was a short walk to our hotel named My One Hotel . We actually booked this part of our trip through a travel agent, which took some of the work out of it for us. Our hotel room was large with a separate sitting area and separate bedroom. The rest of the day was spent walking around La Spezia (it's a small little town), doing laundry and grabbing some dinner.

The next day we grabbed some breakfast at the hotel then packed up our backpack for an adventure! We walked to the train station (not even 10 minutes from the hotel) and took the train to the first of the five towns named Riomaggiore. We ended up just walking around the town and grabbing some great pictures before we hopped back on the train to the fourth town named Vernazza. 

After exploring, we headed to Vernazza to do the hike between there and Monterosso. There was a flood in 2011 that wiped out a lot of the trails, which is why we only did the one hike. The guide books say that it's not a hard hike, but there was definitely some good climbs in there! It took us about an hour and we are SOAKED in sweat by the end! The experience and views were so worth it though.

If you ever do this hike, make sure you wear proper shoes (ie: not sandals like we saw some girls wearing!), don't do it at 12pm in August and bring water :) Just some helpful hints. Once we arrived in Monterosso, we went for lunch at this little restaurant Cantina del Pescatore which was off the beaten path and also had their own wines. They had the best sandwiches! After our bellies were full, we headed to the beach to enjoy the sunshine.

Once we were beached out, we headed back to the hotel to shower, rest and change for some dinner. Our package came with voucher for dinner at a local restaurant, but I won't even tell you the name because the service and food was pretty bad! A terrible meal can always be improved by some fabulous gelato though!

One last stop on our trip and it was my personal piece of heaven...Positano

Europe 2013: Rome

After enjoying a couple days in Barcelona, we were off to Rome! We took a flight from Barcelona to Rome, which was easy. We did have to wait a while to get our bags, but after that, it was off to catch the train. We took the Leonardo Express (I think it was around 10 Euros/pp) and then too the metro to our hotel. We stayed at the Villa Pirandello, which was nice, clean and had a great breakfast every morning. The only negative was that it was set a bit out of the busy areas, so you do have to take the metro to get to the sights. 

Once we dropped our bags off in our room and cooled off in the AC (it was HOT while we were there), we decided to walk to the Trevi fountain which was about 3kms away from our hotel. On our way, we stopped for some dinner and made the worst choice ever for food. It ended up being very expensive and a tourist trap, but we were hangry and needed to eat asap. Once our bellies were full of the disappointing food, we continued our walk to the Trevi fountain. Once we got there, we stayed long enough to take a picture and we were out of there! It was so, so, so busy and I am not a crowds person at all.

After quickly leaving the area, we decided to just keep walking and ended up by the Colosseum. We ended up sitting on a bench in the area watching people and taking it all in before heading back to our our hotel.

 The next day started with a wonderful breakfast at the hotel and then we were off to some more exploring. We took the metro and headed to the spanish steps, which were neat. I think we got there around 11am, and we were already sweating!

After the Spanish steps, we made our way to the pantheon and took in other neat sights around the city.

After a cool down in our hotel, we headed out to try and find a pizza place that Mr.D had found on the internet. After walking in the hot sun, we arrived at the restaurant only to find it was randomly closed! We were both so mad. I guess a lot of the locals take holidays in August, which meant that so many places were closed. The only positive thing about the restaurant being closed was that we ended up just buying meat and buns from a small grocery store and sat in this random square eating our lunch and people watching. It was kind of nice :)

That night, we attempted to find two more restaurants for dinner only to have them be closed on us as well. We were both so mad! We randomly saw this place while walking to the pantheon earlier that day, so we decided to head back there. It ended up being a great choice as the food was delicious and relatively cheap!

The city of Rome is neat and has LOTS of history, but it was our least favourite place that we went to. It was so hot, lots of tourists, lots of stuff was closed and expensive. I know a lot of that had to do with the time of the year that we went, but I doubt that we will be back.

On the book shelf

Happy Monday everyone! We had a quiet weekend as the weather was very rainy on Friday and Saturday. Our weekend included: going to Costco, baking cookies, going to the kids sale with Alison, cleaning the house and going for a long run. Oh and I had a fantastic nap on Saturday afternoon :)

Since I had so much time to read while we were on holidays, I went through quite a number of books. I thought I'd share a couple that I read as I love finding books that others have already read.

After losing her parents, fifteen-year-old Ivy Hart is left to care for her grandmother, older sister and nephew as tenants on a small tobacco farm.  As she struggles with her grandmother’s aging, her sister’s mental illness and her own epilepsy, she realizes they might need more than she can give.

When Jane Forrester takes a position as Grace County’s newest social worker, she doesn’t realize just how much her help is needed.  She quickly becomes emotionally invested in her clients' lives, causing tension with her boss and her new husband.  But as Jane is drawn in by the Hart women, she begins to discover the secrets of the small farm—secrets much darker than she would have guessed.  Soon, she must decide whether to take drastic action to help them, or risk losing the battle against everything she believes is wrong.

Set in rural Grace County, North Carolina in a time of state-mandated sterilizations and racial tension, Necessary Lies tells the story of these two young women, seemingly worlds apart, but both haunted by tragedy.  Jane and Ivy are thrown together and must ask themselves: how can you know what you believe is right, when everyone is telling you it’s wrong?

I picked this book up while we were in London and absolutely loved this book! I didn't know anything about the eugenics program before I read this book, and it opened my eyes to something I had no idea existed before. A must read.

This was the first book that I read by Diane Chamberlain and really enjoyed after hearing others talk about it. It does deal with suicide, but it was still a great read.

It happened like this. I was stolen from an airport. Taken from everything I knew, everything I was used to. Taken to sand and heat, dirt and danger. And he expected me to love him.
This is my story.
A letter from nowhere.

Sixteen year old Gemma is kidnapped from Bangkok airport and taken to the Australian Outback. This wild and desolate landscape becomes almost a character in the book, so vividly is it described. This was an interesting read about a girl who was stolen from an airport. I liked how it was written from her point of view and didn't see the ending coming.

Piece of cake!

When Kate Sandford lands an interview at her favorite music magazine, The Line, it's the chance of a lifetime. So Kate goes out to celebrate—and shows up still drunk to the interview the next morning. It's no surprise that she doesn't get the job, but her performance has convinced the editors that she'd be perfect for an undercover assignment for their gossip rag. All Kate has to do is follow "It Girl" Amber Sheppard into rehab. If she can get the inside scoop—and complete the thirty-day program—they'll reconsider her for the position at The Line. Kate takes the assignment, but when real friendships start to develop, she has to decide if what she has to gain is worth the price she'll have to pay.

I started reading this book randomly while we were in Positano and was unable to finish it before we left. I ended up finding it for cheap at Value Village, so I figured I'd finish reading it. An easy, but fun read.

Europe 2013: Barcelona

After enjoying your time in Paris, we hopped a flight through Easy Jet to Barcelona, which was relatively easy. Once we landed in Barcelona, we hopped on the Aerobus which takes you right from the airport to the centre of the city. From there, we hopped on the metro to head to the Barcelona b&b,  which is where we stayed. Oh and the heat! Walking to and from the metro and b&b with our large backpacks on was so, so, so hot! Not to mention that there was an incident on the metro line, so we ended up having to get off early and walk to the b&b. 

After dropping off our large bags, we headed out in search of some dinner as we were starving! Our b&b was relatively close to La Rambla, so we decided to head that way for some food. We ended up at some random restaurant that wasn't that great, but had awesome people watching! The best of the night was the oreo gelato that we got after dinner...still dreaming about it!

The next morning, we enjoyed breakfast at the b&b before heading out for another Fat Tire Bike Tour. It was a super hot day, but so worth it as we got to see lots of the city! The best part was the 10 Euro lunch that we stopped for at the beach.

That night, we went out for tapas to a place called Sagardi. You could eat as many or as little as you want....they just charge you by the toothpick that holds the tapas together. 

The next day, we both decided that a beach day was in order. The weather was sunny and super warm (high 30C's every day), so we took advantage of that. We didn't bring a camera as we heard about lots of theft on the beach, but it was a picture perfect day! We ended up renting loungers and an umbrella, and it was perfect :)There was so many people trying to sell stuff on the beach though.  After the beach, we headed to a restaurant called La Toreros, where we had fantastic paella! Terrible service, but great food!

The next day included: Gaudi houses, Park Guell and our anniversary. In the morning, we walked to a couple of the Gaudi houses that were close to the b&b. They were neat to see!

After seeing the houses, we took the metro to Park Guell which provides fantastic views of the city of Barcelona! The day we went it was so busy and so, so, so hot! Even in the shade we were sweating our faces off. So worth it though!

That night, we headed out for our anniversary dinner to a Brazilian BBQ place. I think only one of the servers spoke a tiny bit of English, so it was quite the experience. Worth it though as it was really good! After dinner, we took a walk and realized how close we were to the La Sagrada Familia. Not sure why it took us so long to realize that, so we decided to walk the three blocks there. Best part of going at 10pm at night? No crowds! 

We were a bit sad to be leaving Barcelona as it was such a neat city. If I ever get the chance, I would go back in a heart beat!
