Highlights of the weekend: birthday special

First, thank you for all of your comments on Mr.D's birthday post yesterday. I love that he writes them for me and am starting to think he should start writing my blog! You can find his previous posts here, here and here.

Second, if you were wondering what the heck the title was about, it has to do with my MIL and her thinking I was turning 25 this year. How sweet of her ;)

Third, to those that asked or might be wondering what Mr.D was eluding to about the changes to come next, I am not pregnant and that was not an announcement. One of the things that I asked Mr.D for was a blog make over. So that was the changes to come in the next little while :) Maybe it will be a pregnancy announcement next year :)

Onto the birthday weekend...

Friday night I took Harley for a walk and then we ran to the mall as I had to pick a couple things up. I also wanted to buy a new iphone, but was unable to because I just renewed my license and didn't bring my passport with me (you need a government issued id)

Saturday morning I went to a CrossFit class and got my butt kicked by OHS and rowing. After the workout, I met Mr.D for breakfast at Cora's and then I went to finally get a new phone. Lots of calls and discussion with Bell later, I was able to keep my plan and I was happy with that (the new plans suck big time!). After breakfast we ran to CrossIron Mills to exchange a few things. After the mall, we headed home and my in-laws came into town. They kindly took us out for dinner to The Keg and I was stuffed! 

Sunday when we got up the snow had already started. YUCK! After my in-laws left, I spent the morning doing laundry and cozying up with my book under my new super fuzzy blanket that Mr.D bought me. In the afternoon, I headed to Alison's house for her baby shower. So many yummy treats!

Overall, a great birthday weekend minus the snow of course. I was spoiled by Mr.D, my family and my friends. A great birthday indeed :)

Happy 25th (27th) Birthday!!

My wife must fancy me being a wordsmith because she keeps asking me to write her birthday posts. As a Science teacher I have never been considered one with an expressive vocabulary outside of using technical terms like "valence shell orbital hybridization" or "kinetic coefficient of friction", but allow me to wow you with my linguistic skills. (Can you tell that I am a huge nerd?)

This year was the year of the marathon and travel. Just a heads up for anyone who has a significant other who is planning on running a marathon, it so easy to be supportive.  My roll as the supportive husband involved me sitting at home and hanging out with Harley while Leigh ran disgusting distances with a friend. She thanked me for supporting her with her running. You're going to thank me for sitting on my fat ass? I can get behind that, no problems here :)  And race day? Let me tell you about race day.  I drove downtown close to the 10 km point, parked, cheered as Leigh ran by, and then popped into the Galaxy Diner for breakfast. If you've never been to Galaxy Diner, you've never really had breakfast. Its so damn good, I got to feast on delicious smoked meat hash while Leigh was completing her first half of the marathon. After I ate, I biked to the 20 km point, cheered as Leigh ran by, and rode to the next point. This continued until the end of the race, in which my job was to go get the car and take the girls (Leigh and a friend) to Wendy's. If that is my job as a supportive husband, I can't wait for Leigh to run another marathon!

Leigh also got to travel to Ireland in the spring with her mom, leaving me at home with Harley for a week and a half. Since Leigh moved out west from Ontario, that was the longest time we have been apart, and it was a good confirmation that I would not last very long without her in my life. I missed her every day she was away, but I was so excited that she finally got to have a taste of Europe. I'm sure she has spoken about Ireland in previous posts, but I doubt she said too much about what I did here while she was gone. I do a good deal of the cooking in this house, but I know now that if I am just cooking for me, the nutritional value of my meals decreases significantly. Chinese buffet sounded like a good idea a couple nights, probably a couple more times than was good for me, but what the hell, didn't have anyone around to tell me it was a bad idea. Harley and I got to spend some quality time together, but we both missed Leigh. We were both very happy when she came home.

Leigh and I were fortunate enough to spend three weeks together in Europe in August. The challenge of being apart for a week and a half rivals the challenge of being together every moment of every day for three weeks. I know I was nervous that Leigh and I would get sick and tired of each other after one week, never mind three weeks, but I knew that if we didn't kill each other then the trip with strengthen our relationship. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised that we didn't really fight at all on our trip. Oh, we had moments, as any couple would when spending so much time together, but those moments were short lived and quickly forgotten. Leigh asked me what my favorite part of the trip was, but I had a hard time choosing one. I enjoyed every day of our time together, and my favorite part was getting to experience everything with the love of my life. Europe is very interesting and exciting, but it would not have been the same without Leigh.
Yes, this is Leigh in a Europe sized car :) Anyone who will climb into a mini car like this to put a smile on my face is a keeper.

This is a photograph represents how my life feels living with Leigh. Every day is a beautiful sunset, and I will try to make every day for the rest of Leigh's life feels like a beautiful sunset as well.

Well, another birthday come and gone, next year Leigh's blog should look a little different, but I'll let her explain what that will entail. I'll leave this post with a photo of Leigh from her 21st birthday, the first one I got to celebrate with her, and it was one of the first times that I could picture myself being with her for a real long time.

She is still as lovely today as she was 6 years ago :)

Five on Friday

{one} so glad it's Friday! It has been another crazy, busy week at work. I think this weekend is going to be a good one minus the snow that is in our forecast :(

{two} who watched this week's episode of Sons of Anarchy? I didn't see that coming with Tara. Woozers! Does that mean she was never actually pregnant? Do you think her lawyer and Jax's ex knew how far she was going to go?

{three} speaking of Sons of Anarchy, my mom sent me an awesome tank top with Jax on the front of it. Now if I was only as bad ass as a biker babe ;)

{four} Mr.D is writing me a birthday post again this year :) Look for it tomorrow! :)

{five} I had an awesome workout last night at CrossFit. Everything just worked and even though I was tired, I felt strong.

Sweaty Tuesday

Another week of workouts done! Let's see what I got up this past week:

  • 5km walk with Harley
  • at home WOD in our garage that I came up with:
40 double unders
40 burpees
40 single arm OHS
40 push ups
40 switch lunges
40 push jerks
40 kettle bell swings
40 double unders
  • 5.2km {5:26/km pace} run with Harley
  • CrossFit workout which was a strength focused one on push jerk
    • push jerk x3 {55/65/75/85/95lbs}
    • I really struggle with this movement, but with a little one on one help from one of the coaches, it finally all made sense in my head! Nothing beats that feeling.
  • 5.0km run {4:54/km pace}  run with Harley. I NEVER see average paces in the 4's, so I was stoked after this run! Everything just felt so good.
  • 5.0km walk with Harley
  • 4.0km walk with Harley
  • CrossFit workout called "Lift up Luke" which was in support of autism research. The workout was:
As many rounds as possible in 5 minutes of:
4 power cleans
24 double unders
10 pull ups
  • this workout was tougher than I thought it was going to be! 
  • 6.0 km walk with Harley
  • CrossFit workout of:
20 front squats (85lbs)
30 box jumps (24")
40 kettle bell swings (1 pood)
50 wall balls (10lbs)

A little randomness

We had a really quiet weekend with nothing to report, so you get a bunch of randomness today.

  • I haven't had much desire to read lately, but I finally found some books to spark my desire the other day. I finished Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry. Both were really good!
  • I am toying with the idea of signing up for a CrossFit competition in the new year. Now I just need to find myself a partner. Anyone interested?!
  • there is no need to post a link to your post multiple times (more than five) in a day. If someone wants to read it, they will seek out your post.
  • less than a week until my you have my present ready? ;)
  • I don't get why people brag about the drinking they do. Maybe it's because I'm not a big drinker, but we are not in high school/university anymore.
  • I have been looking for the perfect striped dress for a while and finally found one this weekend. Even better? It was only $11.99 at the Gap outlet. Score!

Workout Wednesday

My motivation to workout lately has been lacking, but I still managed to get some workouts in last week. I need something or someone to light a fire under my butt!

  • rest
  • 4.2km walk with Harley
  • deck of cards workout done at home. I did it with the following exercises: kettle bell swings, russian twists, switch lunges and clean & jerks
  • 5.4km {5:35/km pace} run 
  • CrossFit workout of:
AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) in 12 minutes of:

10 burpees
15 wallballs (used a 10lb ball)
20 pistols (10/leg)

  • walk with Harley
  • 4km walk with Harley and Mr.D in the river valley
  • 11km run with Harley
Overall, not a terrible week but not great either.

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Tuesday everyone! How was your Thanksgiving for those Canadians? Mine consisted of gorgeous fall weather, lots of food and time spent with family.

{friday} Mr.D went biking with a friend, so I took Harley for a walk and then went to the mall. I am having zero luck shopping lately. I either don't like anything in the stores or feel like I am between sizes. Who wants to go shopping for me?!

{saturday} we made the drive to Mr.D's parents house, which is three hours away. We took Harley for a walk down in the river valley and the weather was perfect for it! Later on, we dropped by our friend's house to visit with them and meet their baby. After our visit, we met up with Mr.D's parent's at a local pub, where friends of theirs were playing in a band. Sad to say that my in-laws stayed out WAY later than Mr.D and I. We were in bed by 11pm! Haha, so lame.

{sunday} in the morning, I took Harley for a 11km run. Near the end of our run, I spotted a coyote so we quickly got out of that area! The rest of the day was spent helping with dinner, spending time with family and eating lots of good food :)

{monday} we left early in the morning as Mr.D had plans to go biking again with a friend. After he left to go biking, I went to get some groceries, did some cleaning, and took Harley for a long walk. It was another gorgeous fall day in Calgary!

Just in case anyone was wondering, Harley loves tomatoes! The little devil cleared my MIL's garden of the left over ones. Jokes on him though because apparently he doesn't chew them, so however it goes in, it comes back out that way. Probably way too much information, but still hilarious!

Canadian Blogger Christmas swap 2013

Before you go crazy telling me that it's only October and that I am talking about Christmas already, I have a great reason for it!

For the past two years, Lindsey and I have teamed up to organize a Christmas blog swap for Canadian bloggers as we are always left out of the other ones. We had such great success for the past two years, that we are doing it again this year! I know that I always love finding new Canadian blogs, so hopefully this brings out some new people and brings back the old ones too.

We decided to change it a little bit this year though. Instead of sending a package based on your favourite Christmas or holiday related things, we decided to make it an ornament swap instead. There are so many pretty and fun ornaments out there, plus I know my tree can always use something new! That's not to say that you can't include other stuff too, but the main item is to be an ornament.

Harvest Half marthon: race recap

Last Saturday, I ran the Harvest Half Marathon (and half marathon number 10!) for the first time. I volunteered at it two years ago and thought I would run it this year. It definitely did not disappoint and I know that I will be running it again!

The package pick up was a week before the race, so I zipped over on my lunch break to pick up my package. When I showed up just before 1pm (when the package pick up started), there was already a large line up. Luckily, the volunteers showed up shortly and the line went fairly quickly.

On race morning, my mom and I left my house around 6:45pm to make the drive down south for the race start. We ended up parking by the Value Village, which is just a short walk to the race start. It was pretty chilly waiting for the race to start, but ended up being a perfect temperature for running. Just before the start, I saw Nicole and Cori and we wished each other good luck before it was time to run! I had planned on running with Erica, but had no luck finding her before the race. Luckily I spotted her just a couple hundred metres into the race.

The theme for this race should be HILLS! Shortly after the start, you make the first climb into the residential area and before heading into Fish Creek Park. There are a couple hills in Fish Creek Park before it flattens out for about 7kms until the REALLY big hill coming out of Sikome Lake. Erica and I ran together until she went off course around kilometer ten to make a previous commitment. After she left, I picked up the pace as I was feeling strong. The hill at kilometer 17 slowed me down (I walked part of it), but picked it up after the hill.

Before I knew it, I was getting close to the finish and could hear the crowd cheering. I pushed it for the last hundred metres and finished in 1:58:52. I finished 44 out of 122 women in my age category and 348 out of 816 people. 

Overall, pretty happy with my race considering I ran a half marathon the weekend before too!

I think the biggest one that I accomplished was number 13!

 I've never had hair this short, but I am loving it so far!

Highlights of the weekend

This weekend went by super quickly with my mom being here for a visit! Let's see what we got up to:
  • my mom flew in on Thursday night
  • Friday morning we went to Costco and then to CrossIron Mills for some shopping. After shopping, we stopped by Alison's house to meet Delainey. She was so tiny and adorable! 
  • Friday night we hung out at home, made burgers on the BBQ and watched The Heat. Pretty funny movie!
  • Saturday morning we were up bright and early so I could run the Harvest Half Marthon...race report coming tomorrow!
  • After the race, we made a pit stop at Value Village (it was really close to the race start) and found some great stuff. After treasure hunting, we headed back home to shower and take Harley for a walk. That night, we went to the movies to see Runner Runner. It was an okay movie, nothing to write home about.
  • Sunday morning was spent hanging out at home watching tv and relaxing. In the afternoon, we grabbed a late lunch and took Harley for a walk to an area near our house that I hadn't walked around before. It was actually quite nice!

Five on Friday

This week has been absolutely crazy at work, which has meant I've had no energy or desire to blog much this week. Fingers crossed things slow down!

{one} my mom is here visiting until Monday! We don't have much planned yet except for some shopping of course. Any Calgary friends have suggestions of things we should or could do?

{two} As I was sitting typing this up last night with Harley at my feet, he was letting out the worst smelling farts. Just thought you should know and be glad that I can't share it with you through the internet :)

{three} I'm running the Harvest Half Marathon on Saturday. Who signed me up for this?! 

{four} Chocolate covered almonds and chicago style popcorn make cramps much more bearable. And make me a happy person :)

Melissa's Race: race report

When registration opened for this race earlier this year, I had no plans to run it. But, Mr.D's co-worker had a big and was going to sell it for half price, so I couldn't pass it up.

 Race morning

The race starts at 10:40am, so that gave us lots of time to drive out to Banff in the morning, pick up our shirts and get to the start. We left our house just after 8am and had no problems finding parking. We walked to the race start to grab our shirts {still don't get why they don't give them out at package pickup}, dropped them off at the car and then walked back to the race start. The morning was pretty chilly (around 2C), so we waited in the car for as long as we could.

The race

Before we knew it, it was time to line up, wish each other good luck and we were off! Mr.D had time goals faster than mine, so he quickly shot off ahead of me. For the first 10kms, I was feeling better good and was going much too fast for me. It was a total rookie mistake and my legs quickly petered out. The course takes you around two loops by the golf course before you climb back up to the start.  

The hardest part of this race was that they had kilometer signs starting around 7 or 8kms and my Garmin was quickly getting farther and farther off from the signs. At about the 16km sign, my Garmin said almost 17kms which was really throwing me off as I had no clue if the signs were off or if the Garmin was off. My Garmin ended up saying 21.78kms at the finish line. 

I'm not sure when the course changed, but from 2011, you have to go up and around by the Cave and Basin centre before heading back into the finish line. I wasn't expecting that and it along with the kilometer signs being off had me thrown for a loop mentally.

I ended up finishing with a time of 2:04:54. Definitely not my greatest race, but not bad considering I am doing three races in a row. And because I know no one cares about my time and only wants to know about Mr.D's, he finished right on 2 hours. He said that he started out too fast and died in the second half. But, I am still proud of him for keeping up with his training and for finishing the race.

After the race

After crossing the finish line, I went to meet up with Mr.D and his co-worker who had also run the race. Mr.D was already enjoying the free beers, haha. We quickly grabbed some food and made our way back to the car. Being super sweaty and having the cold wind meant I was ready for dry clothes right away!

Overall, it's a fun race to run as you can't beat running in the mountains all around you.
