Exercising and the cycle

Before I get into today's post, I just want to warn any men that might be reading to close out of this post. You'll thank me later :)

Ever since I've had my period, it has been regular as clock work. I was on birth control for awhile almost 6 years ago, but did not like how it made me feel. Ever since then, my periods have been totally regular and I can tell you within a day or two of when I am going to get it. Since I started marathon training and increasing my mileage (but not huge numbers), my last cycle was delayed. I knew that I wasn't pregnant, but it was strange to have it show up almost five days late.

I have been a fairly active person for the last number of years, but have never experienced this before. I am also definitely not underweight (hello being constantly hungry and craving carbs thanks to marathon training!), so I know that's not the issue.

I am wondering if anyone has experienced this with running or other types of exercise. Should I be worried? Or wait to see how my next couple of cycles are? I just don't want it to cause issues down the road when we start trying for some bambinos.

Scotiabank Calgary Marathon: training week four

Week four of training is done! Crazy to think that a month of training is already over and it's only about to start ramping up!

February 17, 2014
  • 6.5km walk with Mr.D and Harley as we had the day off and the weather was nice
  • at home tabata workout (20 seconds/10 seconds off for 8 rounds of each movement) of: burpee to overhead, Russian twists, KB swings, clean & jerks and skaters
February 18, 2014
  • 7.21km {5:33/km avg pace} run. It included a warm up, 6 hill repeats and a cool down
February 19, 2014
  •  CrossFit workout of:
AMRAP in 10 minutes of:
5 OHS (62lbs)
10 deadlifts (62lbs)
15 knees to elbows

  • I suck at knees to elbows, so that part made for a tough workout
February 20, 2014
  • 5.0km (4:50/km avg pace} tempo run. This was one of those runs where everything felt good.
February 21, 2014
  • CrossFit workout of:
AMRAP in 15 mins of:
3 clean and jerks (65lbs)
3 bar muscle ups
6 c&j's
6 bar muscle ups
9 clean and jerks
9 bar muscle ups...
  • for the bar muscle ups, I used a couple of bands and tried to get as many as I could per round. I then did chest to bar pull ups to complete each round.
February 22, 2014
  • 24.0km {5:41/km avg pace} long slow run. It was snowing on the beginning of my run, but thankfully stopped. I also bailed hard on some ice, but thankfully I didn't hurt anything.
February 23, 2014
  • 3.2km cold, cold walk with Harley
  • CrossFit tabata workout of: box jumps, back extensions, med ball cleans and hand release push ups
Tell me: how was your week of workouts or training?

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! I said to yesterday Mr.D yesterday that I wished it was only Saturday and I could have one more day. Wouldn't it be sweet to be so rich that you didn't have to work? Oh man, that would be glorious.

{friday} the workout looked good at CrossFit, so I came home to feed Harley and grab a bite to eat before it was out the door again. The workout kicked my butt! After the workout, I headed home and we just hung out.

{saturday} I was up around 9am and got ready for my long run. I debated doing it on Sunday, but it was supposed to be even colder so I decided to get myself together and out the door. After my run, Mr.D picked me up {I ran from our house to almost downtown where he picked me up} and then had a quick shower and bite to eat. In the afternoon, I went to Alison's house, so we could drive together to Rachel's birthday party. Happy birthday again Rachel! That night, we parked ourselves on the couch and watched Dallas Buyers Club. Definitely not what I thought it was going to be.

{sunday} I went to another CrossFit class in the morning and then stopped to pick up something I bought off Kijiji. A quick stop for groceries and then I took Harley for a cold and frosty walk. The rest of the afternoon was spent curled up with a blanket and a book. A nap might have been had in there too ;)  There is something awesome about a quiet Sunday afternoon with a book and no plans.

Tell me: how was your weekend?

Five on Friday

Did I mention how glad I am that it's Friday?! So ready for the weekend.

Did I also mention that I busted our oven on the weekend? I had just put a coffee cake in the oven and hear this weird sound followed by a poof of smoke. The oven then went into power failure mode and then started beeping non-stop. So, I turned the breaker off/on and waited for Mr.D to get home. Luckily, we could pick up the part from a store nearby and Mr.D could replace it. I was really not looking forward to spending the money on a new one!

I had a kick a** run last night! One of those runs were everything felt right and the speed just came.

I hate you mother nature! Just when I was getting used to the nicer weather and not having to wear multiple layers, you go bringing cold weather back to us. Not looking forward to my 24km run this weekend.

Someone posted a picture of a cookie on Instagram, which made me have a hankering for cookies. Is there anything better than a warm chocolate chip cookie straight out of the oven?!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Three Things Thursday

Changing up the format for Three Things Thursday yet again! How dare I ;)

Three songs that are on repeat right now:
1. California by Dan and the wildfire
2. When the night comes by Dan Auerbach
3. I can't make you love me/Nick of time by Bon Iver

Three things I ate yesterday:
1. avocado pasta with pork chops and cauliflower
2. way too many chocolate covered almonds
3. the most delicious pineapple ever

Three things I'm sad about:
1. we finished all five seasons of Friday Night Lights. Is it strange that I feel sad without the Taylor's in my life? I already miss Matt and Riggins too.
2. that it's still winter
3. that it's not Friday yet

Three guys that are on easy on the eyes:
1. Zach Gilford

2. Taylor Kitsch
3. Mr.D

Tell me: fill in one of the above or tell me three random things!

Scotiabank Calgary Marathon: training week three

The highlights of week three of marathon training would be that the deep freeze like temperatures finally left and I didn't have to wear a million layers to go for a run! Nothing makes me more excited than not having to take 15 minutes to put all of those layers on and figure out if I will be warm enough, haha.

February 10, 2014
  • 3.2km walk with Harley
 February 11, 2014
  • hill repeats- 5.35kms total with warm up, 4 hill repeats and cool down. My stomach was not feeling so hot on this run so I cut it short
February 12, 2014
  • CrossFit workout of backsquats x1 rep. I worked up to 145lbs
February 13, 2014
  • Interval run at lunch time as the weather finally warmed up. 1 on/1 off x 10 reps with warm up and cool down. 4.1kms total.
  • 4.0km walk with Harley
 February 14, 2014
  • rest day
February 15, 2014
  • LSD run of 20kms. Total time was 1:49 and average pace was 5:29/km. The pace was definitely faster than I was aiming for, but my legs felt good and just didn't feel like slowing down so I went with it.
  • strangest thing I saw on my run was a lady running with a small dog and then pushing another one in a jogging stroller.
February 16, 2014
  • 2.5km walk with Harley and Brian. It was so bitterly windy out this day that the walk was cut short.
Overall, not a bad week. I felt pretty good (minus some stomach weirdness on Tuesday) all week, so happy with that.

Tell me: how was your week of workouts and training? What is the strangest thing you've ever seen on your run?

Five on Friday

{one} it's Friday and it's the long weekend! Woo hoo! We have nothing planned for our Family Day weekend, but that's okay.

{two} the weather has finally started to warm up and it's about darn time mother nature! I went for a run yesterday at lunch, which didn't require two pairs of pants, multiple layers and gloves/hat. It was amazing!

{three} I swear my dog is scared of his own poop sometimes. When we go for a walk, he will drop a little nugget and then run away! It's so weird. Can someone tell him to not be scared so I don't have to pick up two poops?

{four} did you know that five years ago today Mr.D asked me to marry him? The funny thing is that we don't celebrate or do anything for Valentine's day now. Next week also marks seven years ago...where the heck did time go?!

The day he proposed...such babies then!

{five} I have a strange pain on my right side by my ribs and have no idea what the heck I did. Maybe someone punched me and I've forgotten?

I hope you have a fantastic weekend everyone!

Three Things Thursday: getting to know you

I decided to change up Three Things Thursday yet again and ask you three questions so I can learn more about you. The questions are:

1. What kind of dishes person are you? The type that:
a. does them as you go
b. leaves them for after you've eaten
c. leaves them for the next day?

2. If someone gave you $250 right now and said spend it however you want, what would you do with it?

3. If you are talking with someone (not a close friend) and they have something on their face or hanging in their nose, would you tell them? Or would you start rubbing your face/nose to make them do the same?

So, let's hear your answers!

Scotiabank Calgary marathon: training week two

Week two of marathon training is in the books! It wasn't the greatest week due to very cold winter temperatures and a cold that kicked my butt. That being said, I survived and am onto week three of training.

  • rest as I took a sick day from work and rested on the couch
  • 5.0km {5:50/km avg pace} run on the treadmill at home. It was way too cold to run outside and I still wasn't feeling 100%. It was supposed to be a tempo run, but I figured slow kilometers were better than none.
  • CrossFit workout of:
Every minute on the minute of snatch
10 reps @ 57lbs
10 reps @ 62lbs
1 fail @ 67lbs
9 reps @62lbs
  • hill repeats. 1km warm up, 6 hill repeats and cool down. 7.42kms total
  • 3.2km walk with Harley. Brrr is all I have to say.
  • rest
  • 16.0km {5:57/km average pace} run. It was a pretty cold day and the wind was wicked. I was layered appropriately, but the wind cut through my face mask.
Thoughts on this week: Not my greatest week of workouts because of having a cold, but I focused on getting better rather than feeling sick longer. I did get all of my runs in, so I feel good about that. I am also very ready for some warmer winter weather. Running in -18/-23C with windchill is not fun.
Tell me: how was your week of workouts/training?

Highlights of the weekend

Before I get into talking about my weekend, I just want to say congratulations to Nicole who welcomed her little guy Leo into the world last week. Make sure you stop by and say congratulations!

This weekend was very quiet in our household. Both of us are still getting over colds, so having zero plans was perfect. Not to mention that it's been freezing cold here, so leaving the house hasn't been very appealing.

{friday} I took Harley for a short walk in the cold after work and then Mr.D and I ran out to pick up some stuff to make sugar cookies. The rest of the night was spent on the couch watching Friday Night Lights. That show has us seriously hooked!

{saturday} I was going to head out for my long run in the morning, but decided to put it off until Sunday. I made the dough for the cookies and then we headed out for some lunch and to run some errands. The rest of the afternoon was spent baking and decorating the cookies.

{sunday} I got up around 9am and waited out the temperature to go for my run...there was no way I was going to run 16kms when it was -23C!! We spent the morning watching Inception and more episodes of FNLs. It finally "warmed" up a bit, so I headed out for my run around 12:30pm. After my run, I had a hot bath to warm up and then did stuff around the house.

A pretty quiet weekend, but it was kind of nice to have zero plans!

Tell me: how was your weekend? Was the weather frigid where you live too?

Five on Friday

{one} thanks for all of your comments on my post yesterday. I'm glad that I'm not the only one that has things that grinds my gears about social media. Funny enough, some of the things I had never noticed or none about before.

{two} we've watched a ridiculous amount of Friday Night Lights this week. Netflix only gives you 15 seconds to decide if you are doing something with your life so one episode turns to three or four, haha.

{three} we have absolutely nothing planned for this weekend. Well, besides going for my long run and making some Valentine sugar cookies - as requested by Mr.D

{four} I've been thinking about getting highlights for the first time in two years. I'd love to be blonde again, but at the same time not colouring my hair saves so much money. What should I do?

{five} hope you have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Social media no no's

Before I get into it, I just want to say that I love blogging/social media and what it has brought into my life. That being said, there are some things that drive me bonkers about blogging and social media. Hopefully I'm not the only one!

1. Word verification and comment approval

I love leaving comments on blogs, but when someone has word verification set it makes me not want to comment. Half the time the word isn't even a word and it's super hard to read. If you are going to have word verification, there is no need for comment approval too. I understand that it stops spam or that you can choose which comments you allow to post, but there is no need to have both.

2. Random #hashtags that you #don't need in the #middle of a sentence

I don't understand this one. If you are going to use hashtags, they belong at the end of your tweet or sentence and not in the middle of sentence where it makes no sense.

3. Constant selfies

I don't mind a selfie now and then, but when your Instagram feed has a selfie every couple of pictures, I will almost always unfollow. I understand that you may love yourself a lot, but you could always look in the mirror if you forget what you look like ;)

4. Linking everyday to a post from your archives

It may be a good way to get people reading your posts, but if I really wanted to read your posts, I would go searching on your blog for them.

So, what really grinds your gears in the social media world?

Scotiabank Calgary Marathon: training week one

Week one of training is in the books! I will admit that I am a little nervous going into this training round as I know what goes into training for a marathon and it's not always easy. But, I am also excited to see what I can do this training cycle too.

  • rest day as we were out of town for Mr.D's grandpas funeral
  • tempo run
    • 0.5km warm up, 5k tempo (5:14, 5:18, 5:08, 5:12, 5:10) and 0.5km cool down
    • 5:19/km average pace
  • weights at home
  • CrossFit workout of:
    A. 5 min double unders ( 139)
    B. 4 min row for cals (46)
    C. 3 min back extensions (53)
    D: 2 min pull ups (20)
    E: 1 min burpees (17)
  • hill repeats
    • 2.8 km warm up with Harley then 4 hill repeats (550m long) and cool down
  • 3.2km walk with Harley
  • run with Harley. 5:50/km average pace. A bit faster than I was hoping though
  •  5.0km walk with Harley
  • CrossFit workout of:
    • push jerk 2, 2, 2, 2, 2
    • worked up to 80lbs
Overall, a pretty good week. I felt strong all week and hit every one of my runs.

Tell me: how was your week of training?
