Five on Friday

{one} we tried a new recipe last night and it was so good! It was thai peanut chicken quinoa bowls from Iowa Girls Eats. If you haven't tried any of her recipes, get on it. All of the ones we have tried have been so good.

{two} I have no idea why, but this song was stuck in my head last night:

{three} have I mentioned how happy I am that it's Friday? This week seemed really long for some reason.

{four} Apparently everyone thinks that I should go to Hawaii. Maybe I will listen to everyone and just go :) Who can say no to sand, sun and a beautiful location?!

{five} I am getting sick of my winter wardrobe. I need some new sweaters, work pants and work shirts. Who wants to go shopping for me? I have had no luck with it lately.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Rambling thoughts for your Thursday

Happy Thursday everyone! I really didn't mean to drop off from blogging, but we didn't get home until later on Monday night from Mr.D's grandpas funeral and then I had no motivation to blog last night. Trying to get back into it, but I don't have much to say lately. So that's why you are getting a verbal diarrhea of a post from me today.

  • did you hear that it snowed in the south? Oh wait, how could you miss that as everything shut down ;) Haha for someone who grew up and lives in a snowy province, snow is nothing new. Wouldn't it be nice if everything shut down because of a couple of cms of snow?
  • On the topic of snow, it's snowing here again. And it's mighty cold. I'm ready for winter to be over now! Could someone put in a good word with mother nature pretty please?
  • marathon training officially started this week and the snow already screwed up my training plans. Anyone want to do hill repeats with me tomorrow night in -17C weather?
  • does anyone watch Shameless? If you don't, get on it already! Such an offside show, but so good!
  • I need some ideas for healthy snacks as I am getting sick of my go-tos lately. What are you go-to snacks?
  • I am trying to decide if I want to go to Hawaii for my cousins wedding in July....should I or shouldn't I? Mr.D won't be coming with me as he will be hopefully teaching summer school. Has anyone been and can say that I MUST go?
  • how the heck is January almost over?!

Tell me: something random!

Five on Friday

{one} happy Friday everyone! Congrats on making it through another work week ;)

{two} I'll admit that I was lazy when I typed up yesterdays post and copied/pasted from a previous post and changed the answers. BUT I was obviously not paying attention because as many of you so kindly (jerk faces!!) pointed out, Christmas is not coming. Do you know what I say to that? It technically is if you think about it ;)

{three} I've been stalking Kijiji lately for something to do, and have been looking for Lululemon clothing. I lucked out this week and found two tank tops (one brand new and the other worn a couple of times) that I was able to get for the price of one regular tank top! Steal. I love me a deal!

{four} I have a craving for semi healthy and easy cookies. Anyone have any recipes for me to try? I made ones that had bananas, rolled oats, chocolate chips and a dash of vanilla the other night. They were okay...nothing fantastic though.

{five} I went for a run at lunch yesterday, and it was so nice to be out running in the sunshine and beautiful weather! Beats running in the dark with my reflective vest and headlamp for sure.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Currently...

Because every post needs a picture. This ones random, but that's what you get today :)

Feeling...excited that Christmas is coming and that our tree is up and my shopping is done **that's what I get for copying and pasting last night from a previous post! Nice catch ladies :)**

Writing...not too much. I've been slacking on the blog posts lately and need to step up my game!

Reading...nothing at the moment. I downloaded The Colour War by Jodi Picoult, but haven't started it yet.

Listening.... not much music lately. I usually listen to CBC on my way to and from work, and then just have a random radio station on quietly at work.

Eating...an apple and peanut butter. Such a good snack! Speaking of snacks, what are you healthy go-to snacks?

Wishing... that summer was here. I'm sick of the dark nights/mornings, ice and snow.

Enjoying... the time before my marathon training plan starts.

Drinking... Diet Coke and water. I am trying so hard to be better about drinking more water!

Learning...that drinking not enough water leads to headaches for me and those are never fun.

Thinking... about marathon training and how I hope this winter isn't too snowy.

Loving... that today is Thursday, which means one more day until the weekend!

Tell me: something that you are currently doing :)

Training Tuesday

Last week was not a great week for workouts. With my family in town and then some plans on the other nights, my workouts were slacking. The highlight of my week related to working out was attending the route reveal of the Calgary Marathon. It was fun to see the route that we will be running and to meet some of the other runners. Onward and upward from here!

01/13
  • rest
01/14
  • rest
01/15
  • 4km walk with Harley
01/16
  • 5.37km (6:12/km pace) run with Harley. It was so slippery and icy out that we walked a lot to avoid falling
01/17
  •  4.2km walk with Harley
01/18
  • 12.25km (5:16/km pace) run with Harley along the river. The weather was so gorgeous out that I ran in a tank top. One of those runs that everything felt great minus the wind on the way back.
01/19
  • 4.2km walk with Harley
  • CrossFit workout out:
Every minute on the minute of:
15 ketttle bell swings (used 1 pood)
45 double unders

  • this was a TOUGH workout!
Overall, not my best week of workouts, but oh well. Things are going to start ramping up with marathon training starting soon.

Tell me: how was your week of workouts?

Our weekend and an award

Happy Monday everyone! Hope you had a great weekend. My weekend was pretty quiet as Mr.D had gone home on Thursday to be with his family. His grandpa was not doing well and unfortunately passed away on Friday night :( Never easy to lose a loved one, but he lived an amazing 98 years!

Mr.D didn't get home until Saturday night, so I took Harley for a walk on Friday night and then just hung out at home. On Saturday the sun was shining and we reached a beautiful 10C out! I took advantage of the weather and went for a run along the river with Harley. After our run, the afternoon was spent on the couch watching a girly movie. Sometimes you just need that!

Amie tagged me in the Liebster award yesterday, so I thought I would play along. Here are the rules:

For those who are unaware what the Liebster award is, it’s an award to help promote new bloggers. The word Liebster is German and has a few different meanings like dearest, lovely, and valued.
There are a few simple rules that you need to follow:
  • Mention the person who nominated you with a link in their blog.
  • Answer the 11 questions provided by the person who nominated you.
  • Nominate 11 other bloggers with less than 200 followers.
  • Create a new set of 11 questions for your nominees to answer.
Here are the questions that Amie asked with my answers:

1. What is your favorite Holiday?
I can't say that there is one holiday that I go crazy over. I like having the time to spend with our family, but not the pressure of buying lots of gifts, etc because the holiday "says" you have to.

2. Name your top 3 favorite vegetables.
Broccoli, asparagus and lately brussel sprouts (VERY surprised I do!)

3. Favorite Musician? Have yous seen them in concert?
I haven't been into music that much lately. I listen to top 40 stuff when I am running and then usually CBC when I drive to and from work. I have seen City and Colour, Rise Against, The Black Keys, Sense Fail, Coheed & Cambria and Britney Spears all in concert though.

4. What made you start blogging?
I started shortly before our wedding to share how our planning was coming along. I started blogging a lot more after the wedding and it's evolved to include my love of: crossfit, running, reading, etc.

5. Cat person? Dog person? No animal person?
Definitely not a cat person! Never have been and doubt I ever will be. Dogs rule!

6. If you could change one thing about the place/city you live, what would it be?
My family would be closer. Otherwise I love Calgary!

7. What do you love most about the place/city you live?
The views of the mountains from many parts of the city, how close it is to get to the mountains, lots of stuff going on, and the awesome running paths/community.

8. Share a vivid childhood memory.
Visiting my grandpa's cabin (my dad's dad) and we had some kind of dessert with coloured marshmellows in it. Not sure if it was the marshmellows or if I was just sick, but let's say that I can never eat those again.

9. What is your favorite form of exercise? What is your least favorite?
Favorite would be either CrossFit or running. Least favorite would be zumba or a step class. I am so uncoordinated!

10. Favorite Color?
Green.

11. Do you like your water plain, flavored, or carbonated?
I would say plain. I don't mind flavoring even now and then, but prefer plain. And must be cold. Not room temperature.

I had zero creativity last night when typing this up, so everyone play long with Amie's questions :)

A belated weekend recap

Have you ever had one of those weekends that you wish didn't have to end? That was the kind of weekend I had. On Friday night, my mom, younger brother R and his girlfriend C flew into Calgary to spend three days with us. I haven't spent much time with R since I moved to Alberta, so it was really nice to see him and meet his girlfriend.

On Saturday morning we decided to brave the weather (they were predicting 10-20cm of snow for Banff and area) and head to Banff. We decided to go to Lake Louise first, but the roads got really bad, so we turned around and headed to Banff. We lucked out and there was a block party going on as an send off for the Canadian Olympic athletes. They had the main street blocked off with lots of booths set up and a free concert by The Arkells and The Sheep Dogs. It ended up being a fun afternoon!

After hanging around downtown for the afternoon, we made our way to the Banff Rocky Mountain Resort. We had rented a two bedroom condo for the night, which worked out really well. After hanging out for a bit, we headed out to the Banff hot springs. I hadn't been in almost 5 years, so it was fun to go again. After a dip in the hot springs, we picked up some pizza and headed back to the condo. We spent the night watching a movie and playing cards. Perfect Saturday night!

On Sunday morning, the weather cleared up so we headed out to show them Lake Louise. After a quick tour, we drove to Canmore to look around and for some lunch. After lunch, we headed home to spend the night watching another movie and playing more cards.

The weather was crappy again on Monday, which wrecked my plans. I was going to take them up the Calgary tower, but that went out the window with the snow storm. We decided to spend the morning hanging out at home before venturing downtown and then heading to CrossIron Mills.

Five on Friday

Happy Friday everyone!

{one} we are going to pick up my mom, younger brother and his girlfriend from the airport tonight! Excited to see all of them and spend some time with them.

{two} we are heading out to Banff tomorrow for the night. They are calling for a bunch of snow in Banff, so fingers crossed the roads aren't too bad. Looking forward to showing them around.

{three} I have been having a serious chip craving this week! Get in my belly :)

{four} I went to Target last night for three things and ended up getting a lot more than that! Darn you Target. I did manage to find Christmas cards for 10 CENTS! You read that right. 10 CENTS!

{five} have a great weekend everyone!

A review: Easy Canvas Prints

A few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity from Easy Canvas Prints to have a canvas made of a picture of my choice in exchange for a review. I jumped on the chance because a) who doesn't love a new canvas print and b) I need some new pictures for our basement wall.

The process of making my canvas was super easy. All you have to do is visit their website, choose your size of canvas (mine was 8x10),  upload your picture, choose your wrap and you were almost done!

The picture that I choose was from our Europe trip while we were in Positano. That place holds a special place in my heart, so I knew I needed to have a picture up in our house somewhere. Here is how it turned out:

I placed my order just before Christmas and it arrived at the beginning of January. Shipping was only around $7 to Canada, but they do offer free shipping to the states (lucky you!). I loved how thick the canvas is and how it came with a hanger on the back to make it even easier for me to hang.

If you would love to order a canvas for yourself, check out this link for 50 % PLUS free shipping!

Tell me: what is your favorite picture or canvas of in your house?

Note: I was given a free 8x10 canvas in exchange for a honest review. All opinions are my own.

Home tour: kitchen/dining room update

Back when we first moved into our house, I did a tour of our new place. You can find that post here and here.Since that time, we've made a bunch of changes to the house, but I thought I'd show you the updates that we did to the kitchen/dining room.

Here is the before:

And the after:

I forgot to take a shot of the whole kitchen, but just use your imagination with the colour ;) The new colour is called dusty olive from Behr. I just randomly chose it when I went in to get some samples and love how it turned out! It is one of those colours that definitely changes in the different lights as sometimes it looks much darker or much lighter.

We also FINALLY bought a new dinning room table (we had our second hand IKEA table for over 5 years! We got the $40 out of it that we paid for it), put up new curtains from Winners and hung the "eat" sign that I found at Target.

Overall, I am pretty happy with how it turned out! And now we can actually have more than two people over for dinner as we have 6 chairs and a table with a leaf. This is big people! :)

I am a ForeRunner

Back in November, the Calgary Marathon put the call out for all enthuastic, social-media savy runners who wanted to share their journey to the starting line. This race holds a special place in my running history, so I threw my name in the ring and hoped for the best! A few weeks ago, I found out that I had been chosen to be a ForeRunner.

What is a ForeRunner you might ask? It is a person or thing that precedes the coming or development of someone or something else....leading the way to victory! I am excited to share my journey and training with everyone as I work towards my second full marathon.

Besides myself, there are ten other ForeRunners. Find their names and links to their blogs below:

If you'd love to learn more about the ForeRunners, please go here. You can also come out to the route reveal event on January 15, 2014 from 5-7pm at Eau Claire. The reveal will take place at 5:45pm and there will be Calgary Marathon merchandise for sale.

Don't want to run a full marathon? Don't fret, there are lots of race options from a kids marathon to 5K to 10K to half marathon to 50K! You can find all of the race information here.

Hope to see you on the pathways or at the starting line!

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! First full week of work in a while and not looking forward to it. Good thing I have next Monday and Tuesday off because my mom, brother and his girlfriend are coming for a visit :)

Let's see what I got up to this weekend:
  • took Harley for a snowy run on Friday night. Mr.D was gone skiing with a friend, so it was Harley and I. After our run, I read my book and watched some tv.
  • Saturday was a pretty lazy day as I had to be home all day. The Shaw guy came to hook up our new Shaw gateway and portal that we bought on boxing day. Then our kitchen table was delivered in the afternoon. That night, I put together the six chairs (who needs a man, haha) and then when Mr.D got home, we put the table together. Full update of our kitchen coming later this week :)
  • Sunday morning I went to get some groceries and then started dinner in the crockpot. I really need to use it more as it's so easy! The rest of the day was spent taking Harley for a run, warming up on the couch in my flannel pj's and watching tv.
Table waiting to be set up

It was colder than that when we left!

Tell me: how was your weekend?

Catching up

Well, it's been a while since I've blogged, so I thought I would do a little catch up post today. Let's see what's new in my world:
  • we spent Christmas with Mr.D's family. It was busy, but lots of fun!
  • we got to spend time with our two nieces, which was awesome! They are so much fun and we don't get to spend enough time with them.
  • we took my MIL out for an early birthday dinner
  • slept in a lot! I seriously love sleep and sleeping in.
  • watched a couple of movies including Don Jon. Don't watch it. Lots of boobs/porn and just wasn't good at all.
  • painted our kitchen...just need to find new curtains and some decorations and it will be all done. I'll post pictures once I have curtains up :)
  • finally bought ourselves a grown up dining room table! We bought a used IKEA table off Kijiji when we first moved in together in 2008, which we outgrew a long time ago. It is being delivered on Saturday and can't wait to see it all set up!
