Five Question Friday

Happy Friday everyone! I figured I'd change it up this week and come up with five questions for you to answer :) Feel free to answer all or none!

{one} if you could do anything this weekend instead of what you have to do/should be doing, what would you do?

{two} if you were in the woods and you came upon a bear, what would you do? Run, scream, stand still?

{three} if you won the dream home, would you keep it? Or try and sell it?

{four} be honest, when you are home alone have you ever looked behind the shower curtain before you peed?

{five} when was the last time that you said or did something that made you cringe thinking back on it?

Have a great weekend everyone!

I've been struggling to come with post ideas lately, so I'm borrowing this post format from Lisa.

{reading}: nothing at the moment. I find that I'm tired by the time I crawl into bed, and haven't had any desire to read. I did read The Girl on the Train recently and it was really good!

{loving}: even though some days can be tough, I'm loving being home with Amelia and being a mom.

{thinking}: about the reason why Amelia has been a bit fussy/clingy the past couple of days. The other night, she wanted nothing to do with Mr.D which is tough for everyone. Hopefully it passes quickly!

{frustrated}: I'm not sure if this makes me sound like a terrible mother, but sometimes I get frustrated that Amelia wants/needs me all of the time. Don't get me wrong, I love her and love being a mom, but there are tough days when I feel like I haven't had two seconds to myself.  Has anyone else felt like this?

{feeling}: a bit tired, but pretty sure that comes with parenthood :)

{anticipating}: the shower that my MIL and SIL are throwing for us this weekend, my 6 week check up (fingers crossed I get cleared to work out!) and a coffee date with a friend next week.

{watching}: oh goodness, we watch a lot of TV shows! Our favourites lately are: Suits, Shameless and Scandal.

{wishing}: that winter was over and it was spring. I hate when it gets cold and snowy out as I can't get out with Amelia and Harley during the day.

Tell me: any one of the above!

{amelia}: showered with love

As I mentioned yesterday, Amelia and I were spoiled on Sunday when Alison and Nicole hosted a shower for us. I am so lucky to have met so many wonderful ladies through blogging. As I said on Instagram, the internet can be a weird place, but I am so glad that it brought these ladies into our lives. We appreciated everyone taking the time out of their busy schedules to come celebrate Amelia and snuggle with her :)

Alison did an amazing job on all of the decorations, so I'll let the pictures do the talking :)

Be careful Alison- that 'd' might show up when you least expect it ;)

Look at all of those little Amelia's!

Can't wait to watch these two play together!
It's a hard job being the centre of attention ;)
Miss Avery

Thank you again to all of the ladies who came to the shower- Amelia and I loved seeing everyone and appreciated it! And thank you to Alison and Nicole both for the pictures- I'm a terrible blogger for not taking any!

Scenes from the weekend

Another weekend has come and gone...why do they have to go so quickly?!  Let's see what we were up to this weekend:

{friday} during the day, I made a quick trip to Crossiron Mills (a local mall here) as I couldn't handle wearing my maternity jeans anymore and my pre-pregnancy jeans aren't quite fitting. I ended up buying new cheap pairs to get me through this time. I also picked up a cute outfit for Amelia to wear to her shower on Sunday. Other than that, we just spent the night hanging out at home.

{saturday} in the morning, Mr.D took Amelia and let me have a wonderful sleep in. The weather had turned snowy and cold, so we spent the day hanging out at home. I took Harley for a short walk and that's pretty much it. Oh, and we Facetimed with Lisa so she could 'meet' Amelia- technology is awesome that way! We were pretty much hermits for the rest of the day :)

{sunday} Alison and Nicole kindly co-hosted a shower for Amelia and I, which was so amazing. Alison did an amazing job with the decorations (I think she should do it as a job!) and Amelia was spoiled with gifts and cuddles. I'll do a full recap tomorrow, but just wanted to say thank you to all of the fabulous ladies that came!

A few sneak peeks of the shower:

Thank you Lauren, Lisa and Amber for this- so perfect!

Body & mind after baby: one month update

I know that these posts aren't for everyone, but I found them interesting and helpful before I had Amelia. Caitlin from Healthy Tipping Point did a series and so did Lindsey from A Running Tale if you are wanting to read other posts. I don't think I will do them every month, but more likely every couple of months.

Body update:

Through the course of my pregnancy, I ended up gaining 35lbs. Pretty sure most of it went to my boobs and belly ;) I ran up until about 27 weeks which is when it hurt my pelvis too much and wasn't worth it anymore. Other than that, I walked almost every day with Harley and then did home strength/HIIT workouts now and then. I definitely was way more laid back about working out while pregnant then before I was pregnant.

As of today, I am about 4.5 weeks postpartum and amazed at how my body has already changed.

I am waiting until my 6 week check up to start fully working out again even though I feel like I could start right now. I still have about 10lbs to lose, but not in a big rush about it as I am breast feeding and don't want to mess with my supply.  My belly is definitely way looser now, but I know that will change with time and working out again.

26 days postpartum
One month postpartum

I think the biggest challenge that I've had with my post partum body is that there are so many things that happen to it that no one talks about! From having very engorged boobs to the night sweats to the bleeding, it's a big adjustment. Add on top of that trying to find shirts that fit my chest and allow me to breast feed, it's a big challenge!

Mind update:

To be honest, I was a little nervous about having a baby as I struggle with big change. I am quite surprised because I have adjusted fairly well and am loving my new mommy role!  I won't lie, but there were a couple times of tears and frustration, but for the most part I am feeling really well. Having my mom here for the first two weeks definitely helped as I was able to nap and rest often, which are huge!

The one hard thing for me is that I am someone who wants to make everyone happy and make sure no one has their feelings hurt, and it's hard when you need to focus on yourself and your new baby. It's a work in progress, but I'm learning to put myself first.

{amelia}: one month

I can't believe that little miss is already a month old! I have a funny feeling that I'll be saying that each month though ;)

Weight: 9lbs even as of yesterday at the doctor's. This makes me so happy after the scare of her not gaining much weight two weeks ago.

Length: 55cms / 21.21 inches. This hasn't changed from birth, but I think she has grown as her newborn outfits are starting to get short in the legs and arms. She has such a tiny waist!

Hair/eyes: still loves of brown hair, but it's lightening up a little bit. Eyes are still very blue

Diapers/clothes: we just switched her to size 1 Pampers diapers as we were running out of the newborn ones and they fit her. She is so long and skinny waisted, but a lot of her newborn clothes are getting too short in the legs and arms.

  • being swaddled
  • being warm
  • her swing
  • her soother as long as it stays in her mouth :)
  • going for walks with Harley and I
  • white noise machine
  • being cold
  • when her soother falls out of her mouth
  • having to wait for me to get set up to breast feed
  • when she has to poop or has a poopy diaper

Eating: she eats every 3-4 hours during the day and then anywhere from 3-5 hours at night. No real schedule to her eating, other than her eating on demand now. She is still being 100% breast fed and it's going much, much better. It was definitely rough and so tough in the beginning, but the nipple shield and my milk fully coming in has helped. She takes between 15-25 minutes to eat and then I pump once a morning. She will take a bottle from Mr.D, which is helpful.

Sleeping: no real schedule to her sleep yet, but will sleep between 3-5 hours at a time at night. She also sleeps lots during the day and I have been trying to put her down for a nap in her crib so she gets used to it when we transition her. After I feed her at night, I will change her diaper, swaddle her and then dim the lights in the nursery (I feed her in the nursery so I don't wake Mr.D during the week as she has to work) and then rock her almost back to sleep. She is in a bassinet beside our bed, so if I get her almost back to sleep she will go back into the bassinet without a problem.

Thank you for being such a happy, calm and content baby! You've made the transition into parenthood so easy for your dad and I. We still can't figure out who you look more like- you definitely have my nose though. Your dad is hoping that you keep your blue eyes :) This past month has definitely been a learning curve for us, but we are so glad you are here and are our daughter.

We love you so much sweat pea!

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Tuesday everyone! It was a long weekend here in Alberta as yesterday was Family Day here. Since I'm off work, it didn't really feel like a holiday but it was nice to have Mr.D home for the day.

{friday} Mr.D had a work related thing that day, so he was home for a bit in the morning. Once he left, I ran some errands with Amelia. Once he got home in the afternoon, we went for a family walk and then just spent the night hanging out at home.

{saturday} Mr.D went mountain biking with Justin (yes, I said mountain biking in February in Alberta!) in the morning, so it was just Amelia and I. It was a gorgeous day out, so I took her and Harley for a long walk. In the evening, we went to visit some of Mr.D's relatives that were in town so they could meet Amelia. We had a nice dinner with them and got to see their baby as well.

Amelia is so thrilled with my antics :)
{sunday} Poor Mr.D went mountain biking again (tough life he has, haha) with another friend in the morning, so I hung out at home. In the afternoon, I headed to Nicole's house to help celebrate Audrey and Leo's birthdays. I failed at taking any pictures, but Nicole did an amazing job with the decorations and food. Thanks for inviting us Nicole :) Mr.D's mom came down in the later afternoon, so we spent the afternoon and evening just hanging out at home.

{monday} our family day was pretty quiet, which was very okay. I had a nap in the morning and then took Harley for a walk. Mr.D made a steak and risiotto dinner for us which was so good! Other than that, we attempted to get hand and foot prints from Amelia which was way harder than we expected! If you have any tips, throw them my way.

Five on Friday

{one} happy Friday everyone! I meant to post more than twice this week, but time just got away from me. If you'd ask me what I did each day, I can tell you these things for sure: change diapers, nap, breast feed and cuddle with Amelia. Anything else accomplished that day is good with me :)

{two} we had our last prenatal class last night and I'm sad that it's finished :( We had a great group of couples and already have events planned with the others moms.

{three} it was a gorgeous day here yesterday, so we were finally able to get out of house for a walk. I met up with Erica and her daughter and we ended up walking over 8kms. If only spring was here to stay!

{four} this little lady makes the funniest faces. Not sure if she is more stunned or more worried in this picture.

{five} happy early Valentine's Day to everyone! Hope you have a great weekend!

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! Being on mat leave and not having to go into work from Monday to Friday is a strange, but good feeling. It also means that I have no idea of which day it is unless Mr.D is home with us on the weekend :)

 1. Top left: first dinner out at a restaurant
2. Top right: sleeping away on her 3 week birthday
3. Bottom left: sleeping away on Sunday too!
4. Bottom right: sling success!

{friday} In the afternoon, we had to take Amelia for a follow up appointment at the lactation consultant after our bad appointment last week. They had told us that she barely gained any weight the week before, so they wanted us to come back to see if she did in fact gain weight. They said that if she didn't gain weight again, we would have to be referred to a pediatrician. Luckily little miss decided to go above and beyond what they wanted her to gain as she ended up gaining well over 300 grams in the week! They told us 15 grams/per day at the minimum and she ended up gaining over 45 grams/ per day. We were both so relieved leaving the appointment as we know now that she is getting enough milk and is growing :) After the appointment, we decided to try and go out for dinner so we headed out to Montana's (super kid friendly!). Amelia ended up sleeping the whole time and barely made a peep, so it was nice to be out.

{saturday} in the morning, we went to meet up with one of Mr.D's friends that was in town for a tournament. He hadn't met Amelia yet, so he got to hold her and I got out of the house, which is always nice! After meeting up with his friend, we headed home and I went to get my hair cut. Always nice to have an hour to myself and get a head massage too :) It was a gorgeous day out weather wise, so we took Harley for a walk in the later afternoon while the sun was still shining. The rest of the day was spent hanging out at home and watching tv.

{sunday} I got up around 6:30am to feed Amelia and then Mr.D took her once I was done. I headed back to bed and ended up sleeping until 10am, which was fantastic! I did a bunch of stuff around the house and tried out a sling that Erica lent me. I think Amelia liked it as she feel right asleep in it! We went for another walk in the afternoon, but it was much chillier today.

{baby d}: maternity pictures

I realized that I never shared the rest of my maternity pictures with everyone as we received them right around the time Miss Amelia was born. We had the pictures taken by the talented Lindsay Leachman, who was fabulous to work with. I was torn about if it was worth it to spend the money to get maternity and newborn pictures done, and I am so glad that we did!

The day we had them taken was a very weird weather day. It wasn't super cold for December and we were experiencing a Chinook, which is why the sky looks so funky. I was almost 34 weeks pregnant at the time.

Thank you again Lindsay for the fabulous pictures! Looking forward to seeing how the newborn pictures turn out :)

The first weeks: helpful items

I know that I am still a newbie when it comes to motherhood, but I wanted to share the things that I found helpful in the first two weeks after child birth. Mr.D and I thought we were pretty prepared to come home with a baby, but there was definitely a few items that we had to run out and buy.

- this part of postpartum sucks and not many people talk about it, but it's completely normal to wake up in the middle of the night covered in sweat. You can thank your lovely hormones for that one! You will want to have a couple extra pairs of pj's as you will go through them quite quickly.

- I'm talking the pads that bring you back to your "I just got my period" days. I had only bought the large/super ones, but I found that I only needed those for a week or so and wanted something not so large for during the day. Stock up before hand or ask your husband to buy them for you :)

Pain killers
- between the pain of delivering a child vaginally, your hormones and the other aches that come from having a child, you will want to have lots of pain killers on hand. I found that Advil worked the best for chills/fever. And stay on top of taking them!

- this isn't something that you can buy, but if a friend/family member, etc offer to help you, take it! Even if they are doing a couple loads of laundry or walking your dog, every little bit helps. I couldn't have done it without my mom, my MIL and Mr.D.

Ice packs
- I am talking about the kind that you can either freeze or heat up in the microwave and will bend when frozen. I found these super helpful when my milk came in as I would heat one up before I pumped and then put a frozen one on my breasts after I pumped to help with the pain. Those first couple of days when your milk comes in are no fun at all and these definitely helped!
Disposable breast pads
- after my milk came in, I found that I was leaking a lot when feeding Amelia on one side or between feeds due to a large milk supply. These definitely saved my bras and shirts!

Tell me: what helped you during the first few weeks after child birth?

Scenes from the weekend

Well, our weekends have certainly changed! For the better of course :)

{friday} my mom was flying home in the morning, so Amelia and I took her to the airport. Sad face :( It was so nice having her here and I appreciated the help so much! After taking her to the airport, we had a follow up appointment at the lactation clinic. It wasn't a great appointment (the lactation consultant wasn't very helpful and made me feel like a terrible mom), but such is life. The rest of the afternoon/night was spent hanging out at home and getting Amelia cuddles.

{saturday} the beautiful weather that we were having decided to leave us, so we spent the day hibernating in the house and watching tv/movies. Around dinner time, I told Mr.D that I needed out of the house so we ran to the mall for a quick bite to eat and pick up a few things.

{sunday} in the morning, Lindsay came over to take our newborn pictures. Miss Amelia decided she didn't want to fall asleep until the very end, but I still can't wait to see how they turned out! After pictures, Mr.D went to get groceries while I did some laundry and made cookies.

My mom, Amelia and myself before she left
A pretty relaxed weekend, but that is perfectly fine :)
