{amelia}: six months

You can find her past updates here:

One month
Two months
Three months
Four months
Five months

Holy smokes! Amelia is already half a year old and my maternity leave is half over. Time is flying by! This age is fun as she is learning so much and discovering lots.

Weight: 16lbs 3 ounces (50% percentile)

Length: 66cms (50% percentile)

this is what happens when dad helps with the monthly pictures

Hair/eyes: hair is still thinning out and it's a mix of brown and blonde. Still getting lighter though. Eyes are still very blue- she got those bad boys from me!

Loves:
  • jumping in the jolly jumper or jumperoo
  • sitting in her high chair
  • rice cereal
  • bath time
  • her bottle at bedtime
  • rolling in her crib
Hates:
  • being tired
  • when her bottle is empty
Eating: she is still 100% breastfed, but gets one bottle of breast milk (around 4-4.5 ounces) at bedtime. She usually eats right after each of her naps, so anywhere from 2.5-4hrs in the day. Close to her 6 month birthday, we decided to see if she would like rice cereal and she gobbled it right up! We have also tried carrots, which have not been a hit with her so far. Bananas or avocados are up next.

Sleeping: oh sweet sleep! The past couple months had been really rough in this department, so Mr.D and I decided to sleep train Amelia when she was just over 5 months old. We used a program called sleep sense and Taren gave to me. She was also a HUGE support for me and let me ask a million and one questions about it. Thank you again Taren!

The program does mean you have to let your baby cry it out, but gave the option of staying in the room with them which was a bit easier. The first night, Amelia cried for 35 minutes and then fell asleep. She woke up a few times that night, but slowly over the next couple of nights she didn't need us to help her back to sleep. If she wakes up now in the night, she will usually fall back asleep in 5-10 minutes. It also takes her maybe 10-15 minutes at the most to fall asleep at night once we put her down. The program also meant that we had to take away the soother and swaddle, which we weren't sure how it was going to go. Luckily, neither have been a big deal.

She goes to bed between 7-8pm and is usually up around 6am for the day. There have been a multiple wakes up in the 5am range, but they are slowly improving. She naps 3-4 times per day and they range anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

It has been so worth it to us and has made a big difference in Amelia as she is so much happier when she gets a solid sleep at night.

Other:
  • still wearing a mix of 3 month and 6 month clothes
  • still wearing size 2 swaddlers, but wears size 3 baby dry at night
  • no sign of any teeth yet

  2. So big!! And sitting now too! I think sleep training is a must too. We did it really early and then had to do it again for a few nights last summer to drop her night feed. I agree they are SO much happier with straight sleep! And so are we :)
I am trying to remember what Avery liked for food at this age, I didn't make purees (laziness!) so I think we did a lot of food I could mash, oatmeal (she could not eat rice cereal) and smoothies!

  3. I'm glad she's sleeping better for you guys! Starting food was so fun for us! I made most of it myself (until I discovered squeeze pouches when he was a bit older and relied on them a lot haha!) Avocado was a big hit and now he won't touch them...figures!

  4. She is such a cutie! I am glad she got your beautiful blue eyes! And I'm also really glad that sleep training worked and that you all are getting more sleep as a result! I am sure that makes a world of difference. It's hard to believe that she is already 6 months old!

  5. Aww thank you for the little shoutout haha! I was so happy to help. Sleep is the BEST, period.
Avocado and bananas are Arianna's favourites, along with blueberries! It's amazing what babies can eat with no teeth! She ate almost a whole pickle today lol!

  6. Amelia is so cute. It's really hard to believe it's been 6 months already though. Weren't we just hanging out in San Francisco and she was in your belly? Time flies!

So glad the sleep training has helped so much with her sleep! That's so important for all three of you! You're halfway through your year of maternity leave already, seriously crazy!

  8. She is such a cutie! Starting food is so fun. D loved avocados, sweet potato, banana, blueberries. I used those mesh feeders with frozen stuff in them to keep her busy and she loved them, super messy and a pain to clean but she loved them. Those mum mum crackers too were handy. YAY for sleep, so glad the sleep training was good for you guys and her!

  10. Wow, 6 months already! She is so darn cute. Do you already have child care set up for when you go back to work? And yay for sleep! We did sleep training too, and then about a month ago, sleep got bad again and we had to do two nights of a "refresher" lol. Kids, they never stop testing your limits ;)

  11. Oh my goodness the cuteness in her pictures is so overwhelming! Such a sweet girl you have there. So glad to hear about the sleep training success! We are working on it. She will only nap one sleep cycle so far, but I'm sure that will improve with time. Our worst time was 50 mins of crying for a nap (my own fault, I let her get overtired) and the best has been 4 mins! The last 2 naps today I've put her down and she kicked away for a few minutes before fussing and crying but I didn't have to go in the room at all because she settled herself. We decided to sleep train now because she was spitting her soother out every time I left the room and would cry until I came back in to put the soother in. Nuh uh kiddo. We aren't getting into THAT habit. Haha :)
