Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! We had a great, and busy weekend. Let's see if I can remember what we all got up to:

{friday} during the day, Amelia and I ran to Dollarama and the bank. When Mr.D got home from work, we decided to go out for dinner which we haven't done in a while. We ended up just going to Montana's (not very exciting, but super kid friendly). Amelia loved sitting in the high chair and watching everyone...she did great considering evenings aren't usually her strong suit. After we came home, put Amelia to bed and I headed out for a run with Harley.

{saturday} in the morning, Amelia and I headed out to meet Alison {Delainey & Lily too} at the Etsy sale. We both arrived just after 9am, and the line up was at least a kilometer long. We decided to brave the line, which went every which way through the garden centre, only to realize it was INSANELY packed and we could barely move in there. We made it down one aisle only to take the emergency exit to get the heck out of there! It gives me anxiety just thinking about how insane it was. It was disappointing as it would have been nice to check out all of the booths. I headed home with a stop at Tim Horton's to get a doughnut to make myself feel better, haha. Mr.D and Justin had tried to go biking but it was pouring rain on them when they got to the trail, so they were at our house watching bike movies when I got home.

After Amelia's nap, we decided to go "look" at some vehicles as we have been thinking about replacing my Mazda 3 for a while (I bought it in Ontario, so it's super rusty thanks to all of the salt they use. It's also a 2004, so getting old and worn down). Looking turned into test driving and buying a new vehicle which we get later this week. This happened when we went "looking" for SUV's too, haha.

We didn't get home until 4:30pm, so we took Harley for a quick walk and stopped at Subway as we didn't take anything out for dinner. We watched an episode of Narcos and were in bed reading by 9:30pm...crazy night over here ;)

{sunday} Justin had texted Mr.D asking if we wanted to go for a hike, so we decided to take advantage of the sunshine and join them. We went to Quaite Valley for a short hike to a camp site to have lunch. We had the kids and dogs with us, so it was the perfect distance. We had a weinie roast at the camp site before heading back down. The sunshine was nice, but it was so windy! Oh well, it was still fun. Amelia was having none of being in the carrier, so Mr.D carried her and she ended up falling asleep in his arms on the way down. Too cute.

We got home in the late afternoon, and the rest of the day was spent doing laundry, making banana bread (using this recipe- add chocolate chips instead of good!) and making soup.

A busy, but fun weekend!

Tell me: how was your weekend?

The high of the week was going to aquasize on Tuesday and getting out for two good runs after Amelia went to bed.

The low of the week was nothing really. Amelia was a bit grumpy/fighting her naps yesterday, so we had to cancel a play date but we made it through the week :)

The best money I spent was groceries? Haha so exciting.

The book I read was The Good Girl by Mary Kubica. It definitely went a way that I didn't think it was going to and I liked it! I can't say much else or I'll give it away.

The meals we had were:
  • Monday: quesadillas
  • Tuesday: Thai chicken crunch wraps -I accidentally used red onion instead, a bit of a different sauce and left out the lettuce and they were still delicious!
  • Wednesday: spaghetti squash with meatballs
  • Thursday: chipotle chicken with lime quinoa - the chicken marinade was definitely a keeper! I would leave the lime out of the quinoa next time though.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Three things Thursday

Thank you everyone for your sweet comments on our pictures yesterday. I love how they turned out and can't wait to get them printed! Okay, onto the three questions for today:

{one} would you rather have someone do your hair or make up every morning?

{two} what is your favourite Halloween candy?

{three} what was your favourite Halloween costume or most memorable one?

Mom & baby photoshoot

I mentioned last week that one of the girls from our baby group organized a photographer to come do a mini photoshoot with all of the moms and their babies. We each had about 10-15 minutes and it worked out really well! Minus Amelia not wanting to smile for a few of the pictures :) You can never have too many pictures in my opinion!

{amelia}: eight months

So much sass!

You can find her previous updates here:

Weight/height: not sure as she hasn't been weighed lately. The last time I took her into the clinic to be weighed was at the end of August and she was 17lbs 13oz, so I'm guessing well over 18bs now.

Hair/eyes: she's a blondie for sure now (everyone keeps mentioning it too) and still her gorgeous blue eyes

  • rolling around on the floor or on her change table when you are trying to change her diaper
  • babbling
  • blowing spit everywhere
  • waving her arms when she is excited or happy
  • watching videos of herself or looking at pictures of herself
  • going on the swings
  • having her face wiped
  • staying still so I can change her diaper
  • if I try and get a boogie out of her nose

Eating: I am still breastfeeding during the day (or if she wakes up in the night). She gets a bottle of breast milk before bed (usually around 200-220mLs), which she gobbles right up. She is also eating a lot of food during the day as well and there doesn't seem to be much that she dislikes. She was fighting being fed purees for a bit, so I started ripping up cooked food and she will pick away and feed herself (with a bit of help from me). We give her plain Cheerios if we need to distract her for a bit while we eat, and I think that has helped a lot with her finger dexterity and being able to get the food into her mouth most of the time. No major gagging incidents either as she is pretty good at chewing everything.

Sleeping: sleeping has definitely improved from the month before. She goes down around 7pm and has been getting up between 4-5am for a quick feed and will go back to sleep until 6-6:15am. Naps have gone down to 2-3 per day depending on their length. Still no rhyme or reason to how long each one is, but oh well. They do get shorter in length as the day goes on though.

  • she is getting good at searching a room for Harley or Mr.D if I ask her where either of them are
  • she cut her first bottom tooth right after she turned 7 months and then her second bottom one right after she turned 8 months. Those things are SHARP!
  • still in size 3 swaddlers during the day and baby dry at night
  • wears mostly 9 month clothing
  • she was screaming for her baths for a couple nights (she usually loves them), so we quickly figured out that she did not want to lay down anymore. She now sits up and loves splashing!

Scenes from the weekend

A fun weekend was had around here! Busy, but fun.

{friday} during the day, Amelia and I went to MEC to return a jacket that I had ordered online for her {we got this one}. I had ordered two sizes as I wasn't sure which one would fit her. I spent the afternoon making some food for Amelia. Mr.D got home in the early afternoon, so we spent some time hanging out before he left shortly after dinner to meet up with some friends for dinner and a movie. I took Amelia and Harley for a short walk with a stop at the swings. Once Amelia was in bed, I caught up on Ellen and watched a documentary on Tig Notaro on Netflix after seeing her on Ellen.

{saturday} I was up bright and early at 6am with Amelia and we let Mr.D have a sleep in as he didn't get home until late. Once he was up, we traded off and I took Harley for a 6km run in the gorgeous weather. Amelia was down for a nap when I got home, so I hopped into the shower and quickly did my hair before she got up. When she woke up, we headed out to go to a kids clothing and toy sale close by. I got there maybe 1.5 hours after it started and it was already quite picked over, but I found a few things for Amelia. In the afternoon, Mr.D's parents arrived for a visit. The boys headed out to pick up railings for our deck while my MIL and I walked up with Amelia to the harvest festival that my neighbourhood puts on each year. We also stopped at a garage sale and I picked two sweaters for Amelia. She made out that day!

Mr.D and I were going to go out for dinner and have my in-laws babysit, but the railings took longer than the boys thought, so we ended up just picking up some pizzas and hanging out at home.

{sunday} Amelia decided 5:20am was a good time to get up, but luckily Mr.D got up with her and I had a bit of a sleep in. Mr.D left to go biking with his bike boyfriend (aka Justin) around 9am, and my in-laws left shortly after that. Amelia decided to have a 26 minute nap, which is not good for her or our day, so I was luckily able to get her back down by laying in bed with her. Once we were up, we took Harley for a walk in the sunshine and just spent the day hanging around at home and doing some cleaning.

When I was laying in bed in the morning, I heard a bang against the house and didn't know what it was {I didn't want to go check as Mr.D was gone and what if it was the boogey man?! Haha}. I found out that it was a bird and it ended up injuring itself. When Mr.D got home, he called the city and they said if we could catch it then to take it an animal hospital since they didn't have anyone to send out on a Sunday. Mr.D tried with a towel, but the little guy hopped through the fence and down the road before we could get him. It was funny to watch him try though!

Happy Friday everyone! We had a good week, but are ready for the weekend and time with Mr.D.

The high of the week was starting our aquasize class on Tuesday (Amelia loved being in the water and splashing), taking pictures with our prenatal group on Thursday and having my free night last night {I tried out an Orange Theory class}.

The low of the week was our day on Wednesday. Amelia is cutting another tooth and was just so grumpy all day long. She cried the entire time when we went for a run, which I am sure scared a few people we passed, haha. My mommy patience was at all time low and Mr.D had something that night for school. We survived though!

The best money I spent was on our mommy/baby pictures yesterday. One of the girls from our prenatal group organized a photographer to come, so it was $25 for a short session with you and your baby. We also took one with the whole group, which will be neat to see.

The books I read were none. I started The Birth House, but am struggling through it.

The meals we had were:
I also made these deep dish oatmeal fudge bars for our baby get together {thanks again M for the recipe!} and hot damn, they are so good! I had to send some with Mr.D to school as I ate way too many on Wednesday (I'm an emotional eater).

Have a great weekend everyone!

Me time

Last week in my post, I mentioned having my free night and promised I'd talk more about it. A few weeks ago, Mr.D decided that one night a week no matter what is going on in our life or how Amelia is, I had to leave the house after dinner and don't come back until Amelia is in bed.  He had two reasons for this:

1) she has been very attached to me lately and we want her to know that other people besides mom can soothe her and put her to bed

2) so that I can have a couple hours to myself to do whatever I wanted to recharge my mom batteries

I will admit that I was very reluctant at first as I didn't want to leave and then Amelia completely lose it at bedtime because I wasn't there and Mr.D have to deal with it. Luckily, she has been good since we started doing this and went down without a peep last week. That definitely makes me feel so much better!

I have to say that this has been fabulous for me! I've gone to get groceries alone and went shopping for's crazy how much more you can get done and quicker without a kid with you ;) I also love knowing that Amelia and Mr.D are bonding and spending time together.  I am so lucky to have such a supportive husband who realizes that I need my alone time (I love being with Amelia, but I also need alone time to recharge). So thank you Mr.D for being a fabulous husband and father!

Scenes from the weekend

This weekend ended up being a fun and busy weekend! Friday and Saturday were beyond gorgeous, but Sunday took a nosedive and was 10C with rain. Let's see what we did this weekend:

{friday} during the day, I made the trek down south (you can drive 45 minutes and still be in's crazy!) to see my friend M and her son. They used to live three doors up from us, but moved down south recently and I hadn't seen their new house yet. We had a fun play date :) After leaving her house, I stopped to pick up a pair of Lulu capris and shirt that I bought off a local FB buy and sell group. They were in perfect condition for $40! Can't beat it. After that, we made the drive home and luckily Amelia slept the whole way home. When Mr.D got home from school, I mowed the lawn and we enjoyed the sunshine outside. Once Amelia went to bed, we watched Narcos before calling it a night.

{saturday} Mr.D let me have a little sleep in (aka until 7am) which was appreciated. Once I got up, I went for a slog of a 7km run with Harley. It just wasn't my day. Once Amelia was up from her nap, we walked up to the club in our neighbourhood that was having a kids clothing and toy sale. It's normally crazy busy, but it was super quiet this time. I ended up getting Amelia a bathing suit, jacket, sweater and dress all for $12. Not bad! We made a quick stop at the swings on our home too :)

In the afternoon, we wanted to get out of the house and enjoy the sunshine, so we went to Bowness Park. There was so many people there! It's been all redone since it was damaged in the floods in 2013. After Amelia went to bed, we watched more of Narcos.

{sunday} we woke up to a cold and rainy day, so we had a slow morning around the house. Amelia woke up 35 minutes into her nap, so I ended up laying in bed with her and she ended up napping for close to 1.5hrs more, which means a happy girl. After she was up, we packed up and headed to the local YMCA to go swimming. This pool isn't as warm, but she still loved it! We ran a couple errands and then headed home for some lunch. Amelia fell asleep on me again after her second nap, so I embraced it and had a nap with her on the couch as well. Sometimes, you've just got to take the cuddles while you can :)

Tell me: how was your weekend?

It's the freakin' weekend! Woo hoo! This week felt kind of long for some reason.

The high of my week was trying a new baby class with Amelia on Thursday and then having my free night {more on this next week} on Thursday night.

The low of my week was a tough day on Wednesday. Amelia was grumpy all day, I was tired and had very little patience. We survived and yesterday was much better!

The best money I spent was on some new clothes for myself. I haven't bought much for myself since going off on mat leave, so trying not to feel too guilty about it. I got: two pairs of pants, a dress, a long sleeve shirt, a sweater, a pair of boots, a new bathing suit and some face products.

The books I read were The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henriquez and The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. Loved both of the books!

The shows we are watching are White Collar and just started Narcos (both on Netflix). We are still struggling to finish Bloodline.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Three Things Thursday

One day closer to the weekend everyone! We can do it. Just a few fun questions for your Thursday.

{one} are you a scruncher or folder? If you don't know what I mean by this, we can't be friends ;)

{two} would you want to go to jail for a day just to see what it would be like?

{three} have you ever trimmed your own or dyed it and had it go terribly wrong?

Let's hear your answers!

Recent eats

Our long weekend was pretty quiet as Mr.D was healing from his surgery. The surgery went well and he didn't end up with black eyes like I thought he would. He's still got some swelling and redness, but otherwise things look good! Thank you for all of your comments :)

We like to try new recipes and have some good and some bad lately. I know I always like trying ones that people have tried as well, so I thought I would share them.

Salsa stuffed muffin meat loaves

I'm not a big meatloaf fan, but these were pretty tasty. Easy to make and good as left overs. I served them with green beans and mini potatoes that I roasted in olive oil and S&P.

Ground turkey and sweet potato skillet

I found this one through Lindsey who always has great links for recipes! This one had potential for me, but it was missing something. Still not quite sure what I would add.

Grilled chili honey lime chicken thighs from Iowa Girl Eats

We've tried a bunch of different recipes from her and they rarely disappoint! I found this one through Brie when she IG'd about it. This was a keeper of a recipe! So, so good. We served it with stir fry veg and coconut rice (you can find her recipe in the post- so good!)

No bake chewy cookies and cream bars

I saw this one linked on IG by someone and decided to make them for Mr.D to take to work. They had potential, but they massively stuck to the wax paper. I tried a bit and it wasn't my favourite

Tell me: have you tried any new recipes lately? Do share!

Happy Friday everyone! Looking forward to a long weekend even if it's a quiet one as Mr.D had surgery yesterday (nothing major- just fixing his nose after he broke it many years ago). The weather isn't supposed to the greatest, so that's okay with me.

The high of my week was nothing really sticking out in my mind. We did get to go meet Mr.D for lunch on Monday which was nice.

The low of my week was seeing Mr.D in pain after his surgery. I'll admit that I think I was more nervous for it then he was. But, I'm glad it all went well and he's done it.

The best money I spent was on some new clothes from Carters and Wal-Mart for Amelia for fall. I also found some stacking bowls for Amelia from Superstore for $4! Can't beat that.

The book I read was Love Letters to The Dead by Ava Dellaira and Never Never (part one and two) by Colleen Hoover. Both were really good for young adult novels, but totally different.

Have a great weekend everyone!

The mom I am

The other day Allison wrote a really great post about the type of mom she thought she would be before having her adorable son and how she is since she's had him. It got my mind thinking about how I thought I would be as a mom and what has changed. I know I'm only 7.5 months into motherhood, but it's already taught me so much especially about myself.

Before having Amelia, I thought I would be super nervous, worried and uptight about everything related to her. Sure, I was super nervous when she was a newborn, but it's definitely lessened over time. That doesn't mean I don't worry (pretty sure every mother does!), but I am definitely more laid back then I thought I would be.

I never thought that I would be able to handle letting my child cry it out. While hearing her cry is not the easiest thing, it's been worth it to us. She is able to sooth herself back to sleep and bedtime/naptime is no longer a long battle. But that also doesn't mean that I let her cry forever. Sometimes she just needs one more cuddle before going to sleep for the night.

I never thought that I would be still breastfeeding 7.5 months later. It was tough in the beginning, but it's been worth it when I see her growing just from my milk.

I never thought that I would no longer have any shame. Once a bunch of doctors and nurses have seen your vagina multiple times, there is no shame.

I thought that I would put a little more effort into getting dressed. Don't get me wrong, I'm not in pjs all day everyday, but if we are hanging out at home for the day, it's yoga pants and tank tops.

I thought that I would do more reading about milestones and developments. I haven't read any books, but do check The Wonder Weeks app every now and then as I find it super helpful.

I thought I would be more worried about germs and dirt. Then I realized that with a big hairy dog in the house, it's pretty hard to prevent her from eating dog hair from time to time.

I thought that my patience level might be better. I will admit that I have terrible patience with things that frustrate me or if I am super tired. I've at least realized when I need a time out from being a mom when my patience level is low so I can recharge and come back as a better mom with more patience.

Tell me: are you the kind of mom you thought you would be? If you are not a mom, what do you think you will be like?

If you were to date me

I'm not sure how it started, but almost every time that my mom is here to visit {yes, looking at you mother!}, her and Mr.D seem to like to make fun of me for something weird I do. That got me thinking about how I would not be fun to date, haha. I've also told Mr.D he's not allowed to divorce me as he puts up with a lot and I'm not sure I could find another man that would.

If you dated me....
  • I would make you always close the cupboard doors after you've been in them
  • you wouldn't be allowed to eat while we watch tv unless I was eating as well
  • you wouldn't be allowed to lick your fingers after eating something (ie: chips)
  • would have to watch me pick at my face while watching tv/on the computer
  • deal with the house being put in "lock down" every night (curtains closed and doors locked)
  • having little to no patience

Please tell me I'm not the only one with weird habits/quirks!

If someone was to date you, what would yours be?
