This and that

Happy Thursday everyone! Thank you for all of your comments on my Monday post and on Instagram. I appreciated and read all of them! It was so hard leaving her on Monday (tears were definitely shed), but it's getting better. She's done well so far this week so fingers crossed it keeps going this way!

You are going to get a bunch of random thoughts for today since my brain isn't quite working yet:
  • I posted some baby stuff on Kijiji and a lady emailed me last night for one of the items. I agreed to the price and asked when she could pick it up. She responded with "oh I don't drive that's why I can't come" when the ad clearly says pick up only. Uh what? Why email me about the item then?
  • it's weird going from being with Amelia 24/7 to only seeing her for a couple hours per day. I miss her!
  • I keep having the phantom baby dream. Aka I wake up in the middle of the night thinking Amelia is in our bed, so I feel around and can't find her. I then roll over and look on the camera and see she is sleeping soundly in her crib. It's so weird
  • my mom and a couple co-workers both got me beautiful flowers on Monday- I'm a lucky lady!

Before work on Monday and Tuesday- can you tell I had been crying in the first picture? :(

Tell me: something random about your week

Body & mind after baby: twelve months update

You can find my previous updates here:

One month Three months Six months
Nine months

Crazy that this is my last update! I still have no idea where the last year went- it was filled with lots of changes, learning experiences, tears, laughs and hugs.

Body update

Let's just say that I had way too many treats over Christmas and that carried well into January. It left me feeling a little more stuffed then I like, so I decided to start tracking my food. I honestly have no will power and if there are baked goods or chips in the house, I will devour them. Tracking my food has definitely helped me think about what I am eating. I'm still pretty active, so that's not the issue at all.

I was going through my bin of clothes the other day that I had put away while I was pregnant, and realized how many different sized bras I have! My boobs changed so much while pregnant and then afterwards. I finished breast feeding Amelia when she was about 11 months old, so my boobs have changed yet again...they are just so sad now, haha.

Mind update

The last three months were definitely a big improvement in terms of the highs and lows of parenting. Amelia started to crawl and move around her own, which was a MAJOR game changer. Her personality also starting coming out a lot more and while she can be super stubborn and very impatient (I'm taking the blame for those traits), it's been fun watching her grow and change.

I wouldn't trade having the first year of her life off with her, but I feel like she is getting to such a fun age that I'm sad that I will be missing things. Maternity leave should be 18 months ;)

I wrote this post a few days before I returned to work, so my feelings and emotions are all over the place about going back to work. I know it will be good to use my brain and have adult conversations again, but it's so hard leaving your child! Major mom guilt that I am still working through. I'm hoping once we get into a routine, I'll start feeling better about it.

  • 3.2km walk with Harley
  • Week 3 day 3 workout from Sweat in the City

Scenes from the weekend

I wish I could say happy Monday, but I'm back at work, not with Amelia and not on mat leave anymore. Quick someone tell me a funny joke so I can have a laugh today!

Let's see what we got up to this weekend:

{friday} Amelia was at the day home in the morning again and it went fairly well. She cried when Mr.D dropped her off, but as soon as she saw the other kids she was done. She slept for an hour and forty five minutes (!!!) and was happy when she got up. She majorly clingy for the rest of the day, but I'm hoping that gets better once she is used to going there.

While she was at the day home, I had a short nap and then took Harley for a walk. After I picked her up, we ran to Wal-Mart as I needed a couple things and wanted to see if they had these boots I saw at another location in my size. We didn't do much for the rest of the afternoon except playing and another nap for Amelia.

{saturday} in the morning, Mr.D took Harley to the vet for his annual check up. Poor guy has to go back to have his teeth cleaned (I've tried doing it and yeah, that wasn't happening!). After Amelia's nap, we had some lunch and then headed to Canmore. One of Mr.D's friends were in town for his son's hockey tournament, so we wanted to see them. We stayed for the game and then headed out so Amelia could nap on the way home. Neither of us felt like cooking, so we got take out from Joey's. Once Amelia was in bed, I did a quick workout and made some energy balls for the work week (gah, not sure I'm ready for this!).

{sunday} Mr.D let me have a bit of a sleep in, so that was wonderful! Once I was up, I made some baked oatmeal for breakfast this week and then cleaned our bathroom. Mr.D headed out to go biking with a co-worker, so once Amelia was down for a nap, I hopped on the treadmill for a sweaty and slow 4 mile run. Once Amelia was up, we just hung out, played and had lunch. Mr.D got home around 1pm, and I headed out to take Harley for a walk. When I got home, we traded off and Mr.D headed out to get groceries. I made a delicious chili and cornbread skillet for dinner- it was so good!

Tell me: how was your weekend?

Friday, January 22, 2016

Happy Friday everyone! Thank you all for your supportive comments and helpful tips on my post yesterday.  I just need to remember that this change will take a bit to become our new normal and that I can't do everything.

From this week:
  • Monday: Amelia was at the day home in the morning and Mr.D dropped her off. I got up and went to get groceries. I came home, took Harley for a walk and then watched a bit of TV before going to pick up Amelia. She slept well and wasn't crying when I got there, so that was good. In the afternoon, we took Harley for a walk and played at home. In the evening, I made chocolate chip cookies and banana bread.
  • Tuesday: after Amelia's morning nap, we headed over to Alison's house for a playdate with her (Delainey and Ryder), Brie + Sully and Jen + Wes. It was nice to get out of the house and see everyone. Thanks again Alison! When we got home, we played and Amelia had a nap. Once Amelia was in bed, I went for a run with Harley
  • Wednesday: Amelia was at the day home again (she cried when Mr.D dropped her off this time, but napped well and was okay when I got there), so I spent the morning laying in bed reading and having a nap. After I picked her up, we came home for lunch and then took Harley for a walk. After dinner, I headed out to the mall to find some new work clothes. I ended up finding a pair of pants, three sweaters, a dress, necklace and earrings. Not bad!
  • Thursday: after Amelia's morning nap, we went out for a short run and then went to Wal-Mart to pick up a couple things. The rest of the day was spent hanging around the house playing and vacuuming.

Three little monkey's jumping on the bed!

The book I am reading is So Much Pretty by Cara Hoffman. I'm a bit more than half way through and still not sure what to think of it.

The meals we had were:

We don't have much planned for the weekend- a vet appointment for Harley and Mr.D is going biking. Other than that, I'm hoping to make a couple snacks and breakfasts for next week. And lots of cuddling Amelia!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Returning to work

This post has been brewing in my head for a couple weeks now, but actually sitting down and writing my thoughts out make me sad so I've been avoiding it. But, with my return to work happening on Monday, I can't avoid it much longer.

When I was pregnant with Amelia, I always thought it would be so easy to return to work. Little did I know how many feelings and emotions would come with it. I always knew that I would have to return to work (not sure it would be financially possible for me to stay home full time right now and I also like having the money to travel to Ontario to see my family), but actually coming to terms with leaving your child is hard. So, so hard.

As I started thinking about actually leaving Amelia with someone else, I found that I had a lot of guilt. Am I doing the right thing? Is she going thrive and be loved by the day home provider? Will she know that I still love her and wish I could be there with her? We have found a wonderful day home provider and Amelia has started her trial with her and it's gone better than I thought so far. That definitely helps ease my momma worries.

I know that being around other children will be good for Amelia- socialization and learning to share, etc are all important. I also know that having adult conversations and using my brain again will be good for me. But that also doesn't make it easier to leave your child.

I think the biggest thing (besides being away from Amelia so much) that I worry about it is how do you get everything done? I'm used to being able to do laundry, walk Harley, get groceries, etc all during the day and now my time to do that will be drastically cut down. I know that cleaning and laundry can always wait, but I'm such a perfectionist. Does anyone have any tips? I'd love some about getting dinner made without using all of my time up with Amelia after work.

In the mean time, I'll be cuddling and spending as much time as I can before I go back to work on Monday. If you need me, you can find me probably shedding a few tears as well :)

{amelia}: twelve months

I'm still in denial that I have a one year old- this last year has gone by so quickly! As sad as I am that Amelia is growing up, she is also getting to be a lot of fun! Her personality is coming out a lot and she's a funny one :)

You can find her previous updates here:

Weight/height: she is 20lbs 11ounces and 73cms long

Hair/eyes: her hair is still very blonde and her eyes are still blue

  • dancing to music
  • The Moblees
  • walking along furniture
  • taking one or two unassisted steps
  • flipping through books

  • sitting still for a diaper change
  • being tired
  • getting her face cleaned

Eating: she is still a really good eater. She loves peas, peanut butter on toast, bread, bananas, meat if it has lots of flavour. She gets four bottles per day that range from 120mLs to 200mLs. We have introduced homo milk to her, but she does not like when it's cold. She also prefers when it's mixed with formula.

Sleeping: She is still a really good sleeper minus a week this month when she decided to get up around 5am everyday! She goes to bed between 7-7:15pm and is up between 6-6:30am. She has two naps per day - one in the morning around 9-9:30am and another in the afternoon around 3-3:30pm. Her morning nap is usually the longer one- usually between an hour and twenty minutes to two hours. Her afternoon one is usually shorter and it's usually 45-60 minutes.

  • she celebrated her first Christmas and was spoiled
  • is wearing 12 month sleepers and 12-18 months clothes
  • still has only 5 teeth but we have a feeling more are on their way
  • still wears size 3 swaddlers and size 4 baby dry

Run for L'Arche: introductions and training plan

In 2013, I had the opportunity to blog about my training for the Run for L'Arche half marathon. I enjoyed working with the organization and blogging about my training. I was in contact with the Run for L'Arche team and jumped at the chance to do so again this year! You can find my previous race recaps here, here and here

Before I get into my training plan and an introduction into myself, I wanted to talk about L'Arche Calgary:
  • L'Arche Calgary is committed to creating a community of belonging that provides an atmosphere in which people with disabilities are respected, their ability to contribute is valued, and their voice is heard.
  • L'Arche Calgary was founded in 1973 and includes five homes, a Day program, a Supported Independent Living Program and a Spiritual Center.
  • L'Arche Calgary's mission is to create homes and faith communities where people with developmental disabilities and those who share life with them find a place of belonging and reveal their gifts.
  • if you would like more information, you can visit their website here
  • race day is March 19, 2016 and includes a half marathon, 5 mile and 1K fun run. You can register here
Okay, a little about myself:

  • I started running in 2010 as a way to lose weight before our wedding. Once our wedding was over, I kept running as I enjoyed it
  • I've ran multiple races- everything from a 5K to half marathon to full marathon
  • I have never trained with a group, usually run alone or with my dog Harley
  • I have a one year old daughter and am returning to work full time at the end of January
  • I love working out and running

Before I start recapping my weekly training, I wanted to share with you my training plan. I created this myself using Hal Higdon's 8km intermediate plan as a guide. His plans have you running 5 days a week, but I know from previous experience that 3 days per week is better for me. I'm going to use this plan as a guide - returning to work and having a busy one year old may mean that I have to change my runs and that's okay.

I'd love to hear from people that are training and running this race! Let me know which race you are training for and how your training is going so far.

Weekend recap + Amelia's first birthday

Happy Monday everyone! We had a busy, but fun weekend. I'm trying not to think too hard about this being my last week at home. It's a strange feeling and not sure I like it.

{friday} after Amelia's morning nap, I dropped her off at the day home for 1.5 hours to start getting used to it. She didn't want to go to our day home provider at first, but she did and didn't cry. I quickly left and headed out to pick up dog food from the vet and get some balloons for Amelia's party. When I came back to pick her up, Amelia was crying. Our day home provider said she was doing fine until she picked her up to change her bum and she lost it. She was herself for the rest of the afternoon and weekend, so that makes me feel better. When we got home, we had some lunch and played for the afternoon until nap time. Once Mr.D got home, I took Harley for a walk and we had a quiet night in as I had to finish cleaning the house and working on stuff for the party.

{saturday} this was the day of Amelia's party! Once Amelia went down for her nap, Mr.D took Harley to the dog sitter's (it was just easier not to have him here with all of the kids) and I finished getting all of the food ready. Amelia's guests arrived around 11am (we had my BIL/SIL and kids, Alison & Justin and kids, and my friend Kim). I think Amelia and everyone had fun so it was a success :) I had made a little smash cake her for her {cake making is so not one of my talents} and she was so funny once we finished singing to her- she would just take a little bit to eat each time, but she loved it!

After the party, we cleaned up and Amelia (along with us) went down for a nap. We didn't do much else for the rest of the day except hang around the house and then watch The Martian once Amelia was in bed.

{sunday} Amelia's birthday! Amelia had a bit of a sleep in (6:30am which is MUCH better than 5am), but was a bit grumpy. Mr.D made us delicious pancakes for breakfast and then Amelia went down for a nap. Once she was up, we went to the mall to pick something up and have some lunch. After that, we headed to a play centre near us so Amelia could crawl around and go down the slides. She seemed like she had a lot of fun! Later in the afternoon, I took Harley for a run and did a quick 21 day fix workout. We facetimed with my family in Ontario as well so they could say happy birthday. After dinner, we let her have more of her birthday cake and she had a bit of sugar rush!

It's crazy how fast this year has gone and how much Amelia has grown.

Friday, January 15, 2016

Happy Friday everyone! This week has seemed pretty busy and this weekend will be too. We are having a super small party for Amelia on Saturday and then her actual birthday is on Sunday. We don't have anything planned for it yet- thinking maybe pancakes for breakfast and doing something fun for her during the day. Swimming or a play area perhaps?

This week:
  • Tuesday: it was a pretty quiet day. When Amelia went down for her nap, my mom went to the mall for a bit. When she got back, we made cookies and then she took Amelia for a walk while I went for a run with Harley. I picked Mr.D and his co-worker up from the airport around 9:30pm.
  • Wednesday: my mom flew out around lunch time, so we drove her to the airport after Amelia's nap. After the airport, we stopped at Michael's, Dollarama and Sobey's. The rest of the afternoon was spent playing and hanging around the house.
  • Thursday: Amelia had a doctors appointment at 8:15am, so we were out of the house pretty early. She fell asleep on the way to the appointment, but luckily went down for a nap when we got home. She ended up sleeping for close to two hours (getting up at 5am might do that to you!), so I read and had a short nap when she was sleeping. Once she was up, we took Harley for a short walk as it was snowing pretty hard. In the afternoon, I vacuumed the house and cleaned the floors. When Amelia went down for her afternoon nap, I worked out and watched Ellen. After dinner, I went to Costco and Superstore to pick up some stuff.
The book I am reading is The Lake of Dreams by Kim Edwards. It's pretty slow moving, but not terrible.

The meals we had were nothing super exciting as Mr.D was away so I didn't meal plan. Need to get back on it though especially since I'm going back to work shortly.

The shows we are watching are Married at First Sight, Born This Way, and Shameless (so excited this is back on!).

The race I signed up for is the 5 mile race for Run for L'Arche. More information about this coming next week!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Catching up yet again

Oh man, life has been busy again and I just haven't felt like sitting down at the end of the day to blog. Must get better as life is only going to get busier when I return to work in a couple weeks. This is going to be another bullet point post to keep it simple!
  • last week, Mr.D came home from work on Wednesday and wasn't feeling good. He ended up catching the flu from me as well, but luckily he wasn't hit quite as hard as I was. He ended up staying home from work on Thursday
  • on Thursday night, my mom flew in so I picked her up from the airport
  • on Friday, I took Mr.D and his co-worker to the airport at 4am (gag!) as they were going to New Orleans for a conference (tough life haha)
  • since my mom has been here, we've:
    • gone to the mall
    • gone out for lunch
    • gone to the science centre
    • been up way too early every morning thanks to Amelia who has been liking the early 5am hour to be up
    • laughed way too much
    • I went to get my hair done
