Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! As much as it sucks that the weekend is over, I have a short week this week and next, so I'm not complaining too much.

{friday} after work, I picked Amelia up and headed home to quickly get changed. Alison (and Ryder) came to pick me up so we could go check out the Vixen of Vintage market in Bowness. There was quite a few people there, but luckily it wasn't as crazy as when we went to the Etsy market. Alison found a couple things, but I was way too indecisive to buy anything. I got home just as Amelia was getting out of the bath, so I helped put her to bed and then we just watched tv for the rest of the night. I also decided to look in the bin of clothes I have for Amelia (they are all bigger sizes) and realized that I had a bunch of clothes she has to wear before she grows out of them soon. My burst of energy continued and I cleaned two bathrooms before heading to bed.

{saturday} Mr.D's parents were coming in the afternoon, so I wanted to get my long run done before they came. I left around 9:45am and had a good run, but chilly run along the river. Such a change from last weekend! After my run, I picked up a couple things at the grocery store and headed home. Amelia went down for a nap around 1pm and my in-laws arrived shortly after that. She ended up having a 2.5 hour nap and then we spent the afternoon just hanging out and Mr.D made us a delicious rib dinner. So yummy! Mr.D and I also went to check out an open house that was close to us, but the house was a big no.

{sunday} Mr.D's parents left around 9am and Mr.D also left shortly after that for his weekly bike date with Justin. While he was gone, we took Harley for a walk, played, did laundry, worked out, and went through a bunch of my clothes. I ended up getting rid of a big garbage bag full which felt good! Amelia went down for her nap around 12:45pm, so I had a shower and then laid in bed. Amelia woke up around 3pm and we went to check out two more open houses- we aren't looking super hard, but wanted to check a few out to get a feel for what we want (we know we want about the same size, but different lay out and not on a bus route). The rest of the afternoon was spent skyping with my family and hanging out.

Thinking Out Loud Thursday #6

Linking up again this week with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday. Join in on the fun!

1. Recent meals

Here are a couple meals that we've had recently:

Hoisin stir fry bowls {so easy and so delicious!}
Easy southwest mac and cheese
Thai chicken flatbread pizza {another super easy and delicious meal}
Pad thai {Mr.D liked it, but it wasn't a favourite of mine}

2. Goals

I've been thinking about my goals for the Calgary half marathon. Not sure I want to put them out there, but I always find that race recaps make me pumped up. Does anyone have any to share? I'd also love some race reports of people who ran a half marathon in 1:45-1:50. Not saying that's my goal, I'm curious about something and want to check it out.

Related to the Calgary half marathon, my training is going well. Solana's plan is definitely kicking my butt and making me work. My legs were feeling dead last week, but this week they are feeling much better.

3. Visitors

This weekend, Mr.D's parents are coming down for a visit. And then next weekend my mom is in town Friday night to Tuesday. As much as it means that I can't do some of our normal weekend things, it's nice to have company and spend time with both grandparents. Maybe Mr.D and I can sneak off for a date night :)

That's all I've got for today! Have a great Thursday everyone!

A Slice of brie book club

This month, Brie chose the book Inside the O'Briens by Lisa Genova. I've read a couple of her other books (Still Alice, Left Neglected and Love Anthony) and enjoyed them all, so I knew I would probably like this book.

First, here is the description of the book from Goodreads:

Joe O’Brien is a forty-four-year-old police officer from the Irish Catholic neighborhood of Charlestown, Massachusetts. A devoted husband, proud father of four children in their twenties, and respected officer, Joe begins experiencing bouts of disorganized thinking, uncharacteristic temper outbursts, and strange, involuntary movements. He initially attributes these episodes to the stress of his job, but as these symptoms worsen, he agrees to see a neurologist and is handed a diagnosis that will change his and his family’s lives forever: Huntington’s Disease.

Huntington’s is a lethal neurodegenerative disease with no treatment and no cure. Each of Joe’s four children has a 50 percent chance of inheriting their father’s disease, and a simple blood test can reveal their genetic fate. While watching her potential future in her father’s escalating symptoms, twenty-one-year-old daughter Katie struggles with the questions this test imposes on her young adult life. Does she want to know? What if she’s gene positive? Can she live with the constant anxiety of not knowing?

As Joe’s symptoms worsen and he’s eventually stripped of his badge and more, Joe struggles to maintain hope and a sense of purpose, while Katie and her siblings must find the courage to either live a life “at risk” or learn their fate.

This book deals with a very heavy and tough topic, and had me stopping to think about what I would do if I were in their shoes many times. I've had this discussion with friends before- would you want to find out if you were going to get a fatal or life threatening disease? I'm still not 100% sure that I would want to know. The thing that would make me change my mind is if I hadn't had kids yet especially with a disease like Huntington's. It's one thing knowing that my life was going to be cut short, but to possibly pass that onto my innocent children is so tough.

The more that I think about whether or not I would want to find out, the more I am so undecided. On one hand it would be nice to know so that I could live my life to the fullest before the symptoms started. On the other hand, I feel like I would take it super hard and would struggle with knowing that my life was going to be cut short.

This book hit close to home for me because both my dad's mom and Mr.D's mom had dementia/Alzheimer's  and ended up passing away from it. I don't think that I've ever talked about it, but my dad has been showing symptoms of dementia for a couple of years now. He has his good days and bad days, but I know it's only going to get worse over time for him. It makes it even tougher knowing that I am not around all of the time and he hasn't been able to get to know Amelia that much. It's also hard knowing that my visits home will eventually be to a care home to see him and that when I walk into the room he may not know me. Do I want to know if I know will suffer from dementia and Alzheimer's? At this point in my life, I don't think that I do.
Looking forward to your next book pick Brie!

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! It was an absolutely gorgeous weekend here and we spent a lot of time outside. Makes me excited for the summer.

{friday} after picking Amelia up from the day home, we headed home and had take out Vietnamese food. Neither of us felt like cooking at all. After Amelia went to bed, we caught up on shows and that was it.

someone thought he was a lap dog

{saturday} in the morning, Mr.D went biking with some co-workers so it was Amelia, Harley and I. We took him for a walk with a stop at the park. After we got home, we vacuumed,  made muffins and then spent lots of time outside since it was so nice.

someone was hot
Amelia went down for a nap around 12:30pm, so I sat in the sunshine reading my book and enjoying the quiet :) Once Amelia was up from her two hour (!!) nap, her and Mr.D came outside while I did a workout and Mr.D cleaned his bike.

We took a quick trip the park and then BBQ'd some hot dogs for dinner. We didn't do much after Amelia went to bed- we are so cool! ;)

{sunday} in the morning, Amelia and I went to get groceries. We went at 8:30am again and were in and out in 30 minutes- that never happens! I witnessed a young, single guy park in the expectant mom/mom with young kids parking spot. I so wanted to be like what the hell?!

We came home to put the groceries away and I headed out for my long run along the river. The pathways were so busy since it was a gorgeous day (pretty sure the temperature was over 20C).

When I got back from my run, Amelia was just heading down for a nap, so I had a shower and then headed out to read my book in the sunshine again. I raked the grass (so much dead and dry grass) and did a couple other things around the house before Amelia got up (she had another two hour nap!). The rest of the day was spent taking Harley for a walk and facetimed/skyped with our parents.

don't mind the crazy hair

Fitness Friday

Linking up with Kris for Fitness Friday- a great way to recap my workouts from the week.

Saturday April 9
  • 4km walk with Harley and Amelia
  • Orangetheory Fitness workout
Last Saturday, Brie organized a free class at the Orangetheory fitness location in Seton in exchange for our honest opinions. Jen and Brie both did very detailed and awesome recaps of what to expect from the class. You can find those posts here and here.

I had been to a class back in the fall, so I knew what to expect. Before our class, our instructor ran through all of the equipment and how the class would work. Each person wears a heart rate monitor, so she explained how to wear them and what you were striving for in the class. It was interesting at the end of the class to see how everyone's outcome was so different.

I love that the classes are broken up into a running and strength segment. I'm not the biggest fan of running on the treadmill, but I definitely pushed myself way harder than I would if I was doing it alone. The strength portion was great as well as my chest was super sore the next day! Our instructor was great- super motivating and was able to help guide us through the workout. I had to ask the instructor how to do one exercise as I was a bit unsure.

At the end of the class, you receive an email with your performance summary. You can see how many minutes you spent in each zone and your total calorie burn.
The only negative aspect to OTF is the price. They don't do drop in classes and I am not able to make it to classes on the regular, so I wouldn't be able to do it.

Sunday April 10
  • 14km long run
    • 6k easy, 4k tempo (4:54, 4:54, 4:52 and 5:05), 4k easy

Monday April 11
  • 4km walk with Harley
  • sweats in the city week two workouts 2.1 and 2.2

Tuesday April 12
  • 9.41km run
    • 1km warm up/cool down
      2 min on/off x 6
      3 min on/off x 4

Wednesday April 13
  • sweats in the city week two workout 2.3
  • ab workout I found on IG

Thursday April 14
  •  4km walk with Harley
  • 5.47km run at lunch
    • 1km warm up/cool down
    • 1 on/ 1 off x 10

Thinking Out Loud Thursday #5

Linking up with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday again :)

1. Recent meals

I haven't blogged about the meals we've had lately, so I thought I would share them today. It's also good for me so I can look back on them when we need meal ideas

Chinese chicken salad
Greek turkey meatballs
Creamy sausage and spinach pasta
Crockpot beef and broccoli - this had potential but it wasn't that great
Strawberry muffins - I didn't have Greek yogurt, so I used some sour cream and apple sauce. They still turned out great!

2. Scandal

Has anyone been watching this season? I feel like everyone got super crazy and everyone needs to take a chill pill. Not enjoying this season.

3. Tired

I've been feeling super tired the past couple of days- I feel like I could use a couple days worth of sleep! Not sure why I feel like that- I go to bed at a reasonable time and am not getting up in the middle of the night. Anyone have some spare energy they could send my way? :)

Scenes from the weekend

Crap, it's Monday again. Why do they have to come so quickly?! Our weekend was good...a mix of family time and individual time. Let's see what we were up to:

{friday} I had the day off and Amelia went to the day home so I could have a 'me' day. After I helped get her ready for the day and out the door with Mr.D, I did a bunch of cleaning up around the house. I caught up on a couple shows before I headed out for a massage and a physio appointment. The massage was splendid and physio helped- luckily nothing is majorly wrong with my knee and it has been feeling good ever since. After both appointments, I picked up a couple groceries and then headed home. I went for a short run/walk with Harley and the knee felt good, but I was wearing crops that were driving me nuts! After I picked Amelia up, we didn't do too much for the rest of the night.

{saturday} the day started off super early at 5:20am...Amelia was up but went back to sleep until 5:45am. I went in and rocked her and she went back down until 6:15am- still so early! Luckily Mr.D got up with her and I got up around 7:30am. She was pretty cranky all morning and went down for a nap at 10am (she normally naps around 1:30pm). After she went down, I laid in bed and ended up falling asleep for well over an hour. Amelia got up around 12:30pm, and we headed out to take Harley for a walk.

I left a cranky Amelia with Mr.D and headed down south to meet up with the blogger girls for a class at Orange Theory Fitness. It was fun! More to come later this week. After the class, we went for dinner at Phoenix Grill. Good food and fun chatting with everyone :) I drove Nicole home and then headed home myself.

{sunday} in the morning, Mr.D and Justin went for their weekly bike date so Amelia and I headed out for groceries around 8:30am.  Best time to go as it wasn't busy at all! Once we were home, we played and put the groceries away.

In the afternoon and after Mr.D was home, I headed out for my long run. My legs were feeling tired from the workout the day before, but I got it done.

When I got home, Amelia had woken up early from her nap, so I went in to rock her. Luckily she fell back asleep and let me transfer her to her crib. We ended up having to wake her up around 4:30pm. We had chicken parm and pasta for dinner and Amelia went to town on it! Good thing we ditched her shirt before letting her dig in ;)

Thinking out loud Thursday #4

I'm linking up with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday. Join in on the fun :)

1. 'me' days

I have my next earned day off on Friday and decided to take a 'me' day. After Mr.D and Amelia leave, I plan on getting back into bed and reading or possibly falling back asleep. In the late morning I have a massage appointment and that's about it. Looking forward to it!

2. Curls

I tried curling my hair the other day using the wand (I usually use a flat iron) and they turned out pretty well! I really want to master the beachy/ loose waves, but can't quite get them. I also really want to buy a texture spray- anyone use one that they really like?

3. Piercings

I have three piercings in each of my ears, but only wear earrings in the bottom holes. I can't remember the last time I wore earrings in them and they have never closed up. But gunk gets in the holes- why does that gunk smell? Same with toe nails- why do they smell? Please tell me I'm not the only one who has noticed this.

4. Cavities

I have to go to the dentist this morning to have a cavity (okay, maybe two) filled. Lame. I really hate the dentist and am not looking forward to this at all.

That's all I've got for today- happy Thursday everyone!

Why I hired a running coach

I briefly mentioned last week that I had hired a running coach, but didn't go any further into it. I had been thinking about it for a while and signing up for the half at the Calgary Marathon was my motivation. I haven't ran a half marathon since March 2014 and knew I wanted to run at least one before we have another baby. Since having Amelia, I've been working on getting my speed back- while it's coming, I know that I am capable of more.

I made myself a training plan for the 5 mile that I ran a couple weeks ago and was able to get a PR. But, I had no idea what to do for a half marathon. Do I include hill training, what kind of tempo runs do I do? Etc. I also wanted someone to tell me exactly what to do and to help motivate me when the tempo runs are tough.

Enter Solana. Who is Solana? She is a badass ultra runner who went from running fast road races to running long distance on the trails. She posts pictures from the trails in her hometown in BC that make me incredibly jealous. When I was training for my second marathon (but hurt my knee and couldn't run it), she had made me a training plan that had me on track to run a strong marathon. I knew that she would be able to help me reach my goals. Maybe one day I will be as fast as her ;)

So far I'm four weeks into working with Solana, and I can say that her training plan is kicking my butt and making me work hard!
