Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! We had a great weekend, but lots of stuff going on. Let's see what we were up to:

[friday] after work on Friday, I went to get my hair done. I usually love what my hair dresser does, but I ended up not liking it this time. I ended up going in to talk to her on Saturday (I hate feeling like I am hurting someone's feelings!), and am going in on Monday to redo it.

I got home just as Amelia was going to bed, so I had a quick cuddle before she went down. Once she was down, I headed out for a walk with Harley.

[saturday] in the morning, Mr.D ran to a bike shop before heading out to the Tool Shed Brewery tour with Justin. While he was doing that, I took Harley and Amelia for a walk, and then we just hung out at home until Amelia went down for a nap. While she was napping, I may have had one myself- it was glorious!

In the late afternoon once Mr.D was home, I headed out for my long run in between the rain showers. I lucked out and it only rained on me for the last kilometer. It was actually nice as it was super muggy out! Once I got home, we had a quick dinner and then Amelia headed to bed. We watched a few episodes of OITNB before heading to bed ourselves.

[sunday] I got up shortly after Amelia and Mr.D got up as I had a bunch of stuff to get done before heading to brunch with the blogging ladies. I had a shower, did some laundry, vacuumed, and cleaned the floors (aka got sh*t done!!). I headed out around 9:30am to meet up with Alison as we were driving to Red Deer for the brunch together. Brunch was at West Lake Grill at Heritage Ranch and it was delicious! So much food. Thanks again to Becky and Lindsey for organizing it :)

While we were in Red Deer, Mr.D got groceries and then had a play date at the mall with Justin and Delainey. Haha those two!

I got home around 3:30pm and quickly changed, and headed out for a run with Harley and Amelia. Oh man, my legs were dead after my 14km run on Saturday! I did 6kms with them and then dropped them off and finished off my run with four more kms. As soon as I got home, we did the switcheroo and Mr.D headed out for bike ride with Justin (they didn't get enough time together this weekend, haha!).

Just like that, another weekend is over!

Tell me: how was your weekend?

Fitness Friday

The two weeks after running the half at Calgary Marathon were pretty lame workout wise. I had zero motivation to run and I barely did any workouts. It was kind of nice! My motivation has come back, so I decided to work with Solana again. I signed up for the Edmonton marathon on August 21st- no goals yet, but hoping to take a bit more time off. Fingers crossed my training goes to plan.

I also signed up to run the Canmore half marathon in September as a fun race. The scenery should help too!

Catching up

Oh man, I feel like I've had no time to sit down and write a blog post. Life is just going by too quickly lately. Let's do a bullet form post today.

  • on Saturday, we went to Banff for the day as Mr.D's parents were there camping with two of our nieces. The weather wasn't the greatest, but it was nice to be in the mountains for a bit. Amelia ended up falling asleep in her stroller while we were walking around and ended up sleeping for two hours!

  • Mr.D had a bit of a lame Father's Day- he was going to go biking with Justin, but the weather still wasn't looking great in the mountains. We ended up hanging around at home that day and I got groceries in the morning. In the afternoon, my MIL and nieces came to our house as they were staying the night. We made steak, mashed potatoe cups, caesar salad and brownies for dinner.
  • our dayhome was closed on Monday, so my MIL watched Amelia for us. She had fun with her cousins all day.
  • I decided to work with Solana again and am training for the Edmonton half marathon in August. More on it later this week.
  • we went to look at three more houses last night. One was pretty perfect inside in terms of lay out and space, but it was super close to a busy road and had mismatched carpet upstairs.
  • that's all I've got for today!

Visit to Ontario

Amelia and I hadn't been back to Ontario since December, so it was about time we went for a visit to see my family. Let's rewind to last Thursday:

[thursday] our flight left at 1pm, so Mr.D dropped us off in the morning before he headed to school. We had lots of time to kill, so I let Amelia play in the kids area before the security. She had a blast walking around and playing with some other kids. Once through security it was a game of killing more time, so we walked around lots and found ways to entertain ourselves. Ah, the lovely flight. Let's just say that Amelia slept for 10 minutes (!!!!) and then wanted to throw things and walk around. It was a long 3.5 hours. My mom picked us up and we didn't do much as we didn't get back to her house until 7:30pm.

[friday] we had a quiet day just hanging around my mom's house. Went for lots of wagon rides and made a couple trips to the park to go on the swings. My brothers and gang came over for dinner. It was fun to see Amelia and her cousin C together again (they are 9 days apart).

[saturday] once Amelia was up in the morning, we packed up some stuff and headed up to my mom's cottage in Grand Bend. It was a hot day (32C), so it was nice to be at the beach. Before the kids went down for a nap, we took them to the splash pad and they had a ball!

While the kids were taking a nap, we hung out in the sun and played some badminton. Once the kids were up, we headed to the splash pad again and to see the beach.

It was such a fun day! We ended up driving back to my mom's house that night so Amelia could sleep in the crib.

[sunday] we didn't do much in the morning, but Amelia woke up in a CRANKY mood that day. In the afternoon, we headed to my aunt's house for a BBQ so I could see my dad. Amelia was happy for a while and then flipped a switch and would lose it on and off. We ended up having to leave early and of course she was asleep in two seconds in the car. When I got back my mom's, I let her sleep in her car with the windows down while I sat on my mom's front porch reading.

[monday] in the morning, Amelia and I went to visit with my dad and his wife, who is currently in a home recovering from a broken pelvis. Amelia fell asleep again on the way back to my mom's, but I was luckily able to to transfer her to the crib where she slept for almost three hours!! My brother, SIL and Charlie came over in the late afternoon for a last playdate before we had to catch our flight.

We headed out to the airport and thought we weren't going to make our flight as traffic was super backed up. After a u-turn and finding another way, we made it on time! This flight started off pretty rough with Amelia, but she luckily fell asleep for the last two hours.

It was a busy trip, but so glad we were able to make it back and spend time with my family.

I felt like posting today, but wasn't sure what exactly about, so I took a page from Lisa's book and am doing a currently post.

Reading: I just started reading Touch by Claire North after Paula mentioned it on her blog. Not 100% sure what I think of it so far, but I'll keep reading. Need to start the next book for Brie's book club as well.  I read the other two that weren't picked, and liked both of them.

Loving: that I have one more work day and then I'm off until next Tuesday afternoon. Also loving that Amelia and I are heading to Ontario to see my family.

Thinking: about how dang hot it is here! (30C) I was seriously tempted to sleep on Amelia's bedroom floor as her room is the only one with air conditioning.

Frustrated: I wouldn't say anything in particular.

Feeling: a bit overwhelmed with life and things that need to get done. Ie: packing our bag, cleaning the bathroom, etc and not having enough time.
Anticipating: our trip to Ontario and how the flights are going to go. Fingers crossed Amelia doesn't have a freak out or want to walk everywhere on the airplane. Wish me luck!!

Watching: I missed Bachelorette night on Monday, so I was catching up on it last night. Chad is still a douche, and I really like Chase. He's cute and seems like such a sweetheart!

Tell me: something you are loving, thinking, or loving!

Scenes from the weekend

I sat down last night to write this post around 9pm and think it was the first time I really sat down all weekend! We managed to cram in a lot of stuff this weekend.

[friday] after work, I stopped at the library to return a book and pick up two more (the next one for Brie's book club). I headed home and we picked up some pizza for dinner. Once Amelia was in bed, I started to paint the columns around our front porch and along the garage. They were looking worn and needed to be done. I think I finished around 9:45pm and it was pretty much straight to bed!

[saturday]  in the morning, I put a coat of paint on the front and back door (they needed to be done as well) before we headed out to look at a couple houses. One was a major no, one was okay but not quite perfect, and one was perfect. It was above our budget, but decided to put an offer in on it to see if we could get them to come down. We ended up hearing back on Sunday morning that they rejected our offer and also wanted a way shorter possession date, which didn't work for us. Onto the next one!

After looking at houses, we came home to have lunch, play outside and then Amelia went down for a nap. While she was sleeping, I put another coat of paint on the doors - not sure why, but they ended up looking like sh*t so I was super frustrated.

What else did we do? Took Harley for a walk, planted the flowers we bought last weekend and then Justin came over to have a BBQ with us. After Amelia was in bed, I mowed the grass and then cleaned the floors. Productive day!

[sunday] I had a wonderful sleep-in and got up just before Mr.D left for his bike date with Justin. Amelia and I headed to Home Depot to pick up some different paint- all was going well until she had a freak out in the store. That was fun ;) After we got home, we played outside before she went down for a nap around 10:50am (she ended up sleeping for 2 hours and 15 mins!). While she was napping, I repainted the front door with the new paint, and did a workout in the sunshine.

Once Mr.D got home, I quickly ran to Wal-Mart to pick up a few things. When I got back, I put the groceries away and we headed out for a bike ride with Amelia.  She wasn't a huge fan of the helmet, but some raisins made her happy. She ended falling fast asleep towards the end of our ride- it was so cute!

Something exciting is that Amelia has finally started walking way more the past couple of days! It's like she realized that she could and now she won't stop. Love it!

Calgary half marathon: race report

Ok, short version of the race is that I ran an awesome race and PR'd by more than 5 minutes!! That's all you wanted to know right? ;) Haha, let's rewind and I'll tell you the full story.

On Saturday, I headed down to the stampede grounds to pick up my race package. No issues getting my package and it was pretty quick and easy. Picked up a free pace band from the Running Room and some free pasta as well. The race packages weren't super exciting (race information, t-shirt, chews, and your number), but that's okay as I don't care much about that stuff anyways.

Race morning started bright and early at 4:55am. I quickly hopped out of bed, got dressed and made some toast before heading out to the c-train station. I ended up catching an earlier train than I planned, but it worked out well as it didn't fill up and I got to the race start just after 6am. A couple quick stops in the bathroom [I'm the worst for having to nervous pee] and hung out in the building as it was a bit chilly that morning. The weather in the days leading up to the race were rainy and cold, but the sun came out and it ended up being a gorgeous morning.

I headed towards the starting corrals around 6:40am and tried to find the 1:50 pace bunny. Sub 1:50 was my goal that I didn't say out loud to anyone but Solana and Mr.D as I was scared of failing. Before I knew it, O Canada was being sung and it was time to run!

I honestly feel like the whole race was a blur minus a few points that I remember. Like seeing Kristen and Heather {+ their kids} unexpectedly along 17th (at least I think it was!). Hearing them scream my name and cheer for me was awesome and pumped me up! Running down 17th avenue, I was focused on counting up the streets so we could turn onto 14th street. From there it was passing by my work along Kensington Road and onto Memorial. I lost the pace bunny somewhere along here, so I put in my earphones and pumped up the music. Hitting the turn around and taking another gel definitely helped my energy levels! From there, it was all about getting to East Village and onto the home stretch into the stampede grounds. I saw Kristen + Heather again, along with Mr.D and his dad- so awesome! I didn't look at my overall time the whole race until the final 300ms or so and knew I had made my goal! The pace bunny said his goal was to get our gun time around 1:48 or 1:49 and I could always see him ahead of me, so I knew I could do it!

Crossed the finish line, got my medal and water- I didn't feel like death or need to puke, so I knew I ran a strong race! I headed inside to meet up with Mr.D and waited for Becky to cross the finish line as I saw her near the end of the race. Also got to see Kaella and talk about how her race went as well.

Finish time- 1:49:49
Place/gender- 137/1526
Pace/division- 37/279

Such an awesome race! The volunteers are fantastic and the crowd support along the course is amazing too. I will definitely be back!

ps- my first ever half marathon was the Calgary Marathon in 2011 {race report here} and I finished in 1:58. Five years and one kid later, almost ten minutes off my time is pretty freaking awesome!
