Scenes from my weekend

Happy Monday everyone! This weekend was busy, but filled with lots of fun. I'm off today for my next earned day off, which gives me a chance to recover and get some stuff done around the house. And of course spend time with Amelia.

Let's see what we were up to:

{friday} nothing much happened after work on Friday. Mr.D picked up Vietnamese food for us as we didn't feel like cooking. Once Amelia was in bed, I took Harley for a walk and then watched tv.

{saturday} Mr.D got up with Amelia, but I couldn't fall back asleep so I ended up laying in bed for a while browsing the internet. Once I was up, I made us some pancakes for breakfast (Amelia ate almost two full ones!). Mr.D headed out for his bike date with Justin, so I packed Amelia and Harley up and went for a run. It was pretty darn windy out, but otherwise we had a good run. Amelia ended up falling asleep not even five minutes from home, so I parked the stroller in the garage and put on a winter coat and hung out in the garage while she napped. She ended up sleeping for an hour and woke up super happy.

rockstar hair!
In the afternoon, I vacuumed the house, showered and hung out with Amelia. Not sure why, but Amelia suddenly felt super warm and had a crappy nap. A little Tylenol and some cuddles, she seemed to be a bit happier. I left around 4:45pm to meet up with the girls before heading to Ashley's house warming party. It was a fun night of girl talk, delicious food {I made this dip} and playing Cards of Humanity.

{sunday} I got home around 11:30pm the night before, so it was appreciated that Mr.D got up with Amelia. I ended up getting up around 7:30am and spent the morning hanging out with Amelia. She got super grumpy around 9am, so we put her down for a nap and hoped for the best! I left just after 9:30am to meet up with the girls to go to my first body pump class. It was a super busy class, but fun to try it out and get my butt kicked.

Jo, Ashley, Becky, Kaella, Kris, myself, Jen and Brie

After body pump, I headed home and missed out on brunch. Amelia ended up sleeping until 11:20am (!!!), so her and Mr.D were gone to the mall when I got home. They didn't end up getting home until 2:30pm, so I made myself some lunch, got cleaned up and had a little nap. Once they got home, we headed out so I could drop Mr.D off at Justin's before I went to Nicole's for her kids birthday party.  She did a great job decorating and Amelia loved playing and watching the other kids. Thanks for inviting us Nicole :)

TGIF

Well hello there sweet, sweet Friday! This week has been kind of slow at work, which makes for long day. I'm not going to complain too much though as I know how quickly it can get busy.

The high of the week was Amelia being a ham in the mornings and after work. She just blabbers away and has been doing downward dogs. She just makes me laugh :)

The low of the week was nothing major. Amelia has come home in her spare outfit two days though as she major blowouts. Glad I didn't have to deal with those ;)

The book I just finished reading is Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. I really enjoyed this book and it had me turning the pages pretty quickly.

The meals we had were:
Has anyone else been watching Married at First Sight? I knew David and Ashley were going to end up like that. Curious to see what will happen with the two other couples.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Run for L'Arche: training week five

Last week was a pretty good week of workouts. I went to the November Project workout again (if any Calgary friends ever want to come with me, let me know!), which destroyed my legs from all the stairs. My legs hurt until Saturday night. Because my legs were hurting so much, I made sure to foam roll and I also had a professional massage.

Have you heard about foam rolling, but aren't sure how exactly to do it? Here are a couple links to help you:

Scenes from the weekend

Well, that weekend flew by too quickly! It was filled with family, resisting naps for Amelia, and some me time. Let's see what we were up to:

{friday} I had the day off of work, so I decided to take a 'me' day instead of keeping Amelia home with me.  I took Harley for a long walk in the morning and then headed out for a massage. My shoulders were super tense from being at a desk again and my legs were so tight from the stairs on Wednesday! It was a wonderfully painful 60 minutes ;) After my massage, I stopped at Value Village to drop off some donations and look around. I ended up getting Amelia a couple things, plus a skirt, sweater and shirt for me all for under $30.

After VV, I stopped at the mall to get some tights hemmed at Lululemon, grab some lunch, and buy a couple new bras. Exciting times ;) I got home around 2:30pm and spent the next 1.5 hours laying on the couch catching up on Ellen and napping. Around 4:30pm, Harley and I walked to the dayhome to pick up Amelia since it was a relatively nice day out.  Amelia was super tired, so she was in bed by 6:45pm. We didn't do much for the rest of the night except catch up on Scandal and Grey's.

{saturday} Amelia was feeling warm and was super tired the night before and was up once during the night. She settled back down and then ended up sleeping in until 8:45am!! That has never happened in our house. Mr.D and I didn't wake up until 7:20am and I spent the next hour laying in bed reading. It was pretty darn wonderful! In the later morning, we went for a chilly family walk and stopped at the swings before heading home.

In the afternoon, Mr.D's parents came down for a visit. Amelia went down for a nap and ended up only sleeping for 40 minutes- definitely not enough for that child! Luckily, she was pretty happy for the rest of the day. Mr.D's watched Amelia, so we headed out for a date night. We went to The Keg for a delicious dinner! We hadn't been out alone for a while, so it was nice to be able to chat and not have to talk over Amelia.

{sunday} I had a bit of a sleep in, which was nice. Once I was up, I made pancakes for everyone before my in-laws left to drive home. I ended up running out of the boxed mix and made my own using this recipe. They were thicker than normal pancakes, but still pretty good. It made a lot as well, so we will be able to use the mix a couple more times. My in-laws left around 9am, and Amelia proceeded to fight her morning nap. We ended up getting her up as she was having none of it. We are thinking she is moving to one nap a day, which would be fine if her one nap was long enough.

Hanging out with dad after fighting her nap

her first pigtails!

I headed out for a 10km run with Harley while her and Mr.D played at home. Once I was back, we had some lunch and she luckily went down for a nap (though it was shorter than she needed!). After her nap, we got groceries and then spent the rest of the day making dinner and playing.

Run for L'Arche: training week four

When I posted my intro to myself and my training plan back in January, I apparently forgot how to count or I was just really excited about training.....I started training a week early as I had made my training plan eight weeks long. Since I've already put in the work, I decided to add an extra onto my plan and make it nine weeks instead. Here is my updated training plan:

Onto my training from last week:

Monday February 8
  • 4km walk with Harley
  • November project workout- lots of burpees, running, jump squats
    • this was my first time going and I was nervous as I don't like putting myself out there and this was a group of people I had never met before. It was fun though and a good workout!

Tuesday February 9
  • 4km walk along the river at lunch

Wednesday February 10
  • 4.8 run
    • 1km warm up
      5x 400ms (1:49, 1:41, 1:45, 1:41, 1:46)
      1km cool down

Thursday February 11
  • I didn't record anything for this day and my memory sucks!

Friday February 12
  • 6.3km {5:34/km pace} run long the river at lunch
  • 4km walk with Harley
Saturday February 13
  • 4km walk with Harley

Sunday February 14
  • 8km {5:17/km pace} long run with Harley. It was a super windy day out, so it helped push us along and made it so tough on the way back home!

Total kilometers: 19.1 kilometers

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Tuesday everyone! This recap is coming to you a little late thanks to the Family Day long weekend. Three day weekends are pretty darn nice. let's see what we were up to:

{friday} Mr.D was off work, so he picked Amelia up from the day home. She was not happy when he brought her home so they facetimed me at work. It helped a little bit :) I made an easy shrimp stirfry and then I took Harley for a walk once Amelia in bed. It was a super foggy night out, so it was a kind of creepy walk. Pretty sure nothing else exciting happened the rest of the night.

{saturday} I was a lucky lady and got to have a sleep in until 8am. Once I was up, I vacuumed the house and washed the floors. Not my favourite chore. Amelia had an amazing 2.5 hour nap in the morning! We both checked to make sure she was still breathing as she rarely naps that long.

Can you guess who dressed Amelia? ;)

It was a gorgeous, but windy day out so we decided to go check out Bill Hill Springs Park. Gorgeous spot, but it was icey! We ended leaving and decided to try Glenbow Ranch but it's pretty open and Amelia hates having the wind in her face. Womp womp! The rest of the afternoon was spent hanging out at home and taking Harley for a walk. We got take out for dinner and spent the night watching tv.

{sunday} in the morning, Mr.D headed out for a bike ride (surprise, surprise) with Justin. While they were biking, Amelia and I hung out at home. Once they were back from biking, I headed out for a run with Harley. It was a super windy, but warm day. Later in the afternoon, Alison + family came over for a last minute dinner. We had a delicious dinner of ribs, veggies, salad, buns and cake pops & ice cream. I'm still full! It was fun to watch Amelia and Delainey play together.

not too big for it at all!

We put Amelia down to bed that night and she was up crying less than ten minutes later. I went into her room to find her crib and herself covered in puke. So gross! We gave her a quick bath and cleaned up her crib, and luckily she went back down without any issues. We think she just had too much to eat + a big bottle too close to bed.

{monday} I'm not going to lie- I was in a grumpy mood all day for some reason. I just couldn't get out of it! After Amelia's morning nap, I went to meet up with a friend and her son at a play place while Mr.D stayed home to change the oil in the car. It was pretty crazy in there, but the kids had fun playing and we got to catch up :) When we got home, I took Harley for a long walk in the sunshine. Nothing much else happened- dinner, workout, blog, shower and bed
 :)

they did have fun I promise!

TGIF

Another work week down- woo hoo! Even better that this weekend is a long weekend and then I have next Friday off. Amelia has slowly gotten back to her normal self which is awesome- I've missed her funny self!

The high of this week was Amelia being her happy self last night. Mr.D was out at a concert, so it was just her and I after work/before bedtime. Another high of the week (minus getting up SUPER early) was going to a November Project workout on Monday morning.

The low of the week was nothing stands out in my mind. Amelia did have a low grade fever on Monday and Wednesday, but it went down right away with Tylenol so the dayhome didn't call us.

The meals we had were:
  • Sunday: chicken taco soup
  • Monday: roasted red pepper pasta
  • Tuesday: beef satay with rice and grilled zucchini - I found this recipe in the magazine that comes in the newspaper on Friday's (it's from Julie Van Rosendaal). I couldn't find it online, but I'll share it with everyone since it was so delicious. A little salty, but so good!
    • in a glass bowl, combine 1/3 cup soy sauce, 2 tbsp sesame oil, 1 tbsp honey or brown sugar, 1 tbsp grated ginger, 2-3 crushed garlic cloves and 2 finely chopped green onions. Add 1lb stir fry beef, cut into thin strips. Toss with your hands to coat the meat well, cover and refridgerate for an hour. When ready to cook, soak bamboo skewers in water for 15 minutes. Thread 2-3 pieces of beef onto each skewer, winding back and forth in an S shape and pushing the meat down to make it uniform. Grill or roast on a baking sheet at 425F for 10 minutes or just until cooked through.
The shows we are watching are: Shameless (anyone else watching this season?), Ellen (slowly getting caught up), Suits and Married At First Sight.

I'm thinking about signing up
for a couple of races. I'm thinking about doing a MEC race in April in Nose Hill Park and then the Eye the Wall at the beginning of May. Who wants to come run with me?!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Thinking Out Loud #2

I'm joining in on Thinking Out Loud with Amanda again this week. It's a great way to get all of those random thoughts out!

1. Tell me no to lulu

I know that I just bought myself a running jacket and sports bras, but I really want a new pair of crops and some tank tops. Someone tell me that I don't need to buy either! I would love a pair of these and this tank top in boom juice. Or if you wanted to be really nice, I'd take the crops in a 6 and the tanks in a 4 ;)

2. Zits

I've had the worst zit on the side of my face near my eyebrow for a couple of days now. It just won't go away and it's so big and angry. I feel like people don't see me, but rather see my zit first. Haha.

3. Instagram

Anytime that I post anything active related on Instagram lately, I lose followers. Why follow me in the first place if you don't want to see that as I clearly like to work out? Also- the randoms that follow you selling wraps, etc and then unfollow you a couple days later- so annoying! Just because I had a baby doesn't mean I want to buy wraps. It's called working out! End rant.

4. Birthdays

I'm turning 30 this October and really want to plan a weekend away somewhere without Amelia. I love her, but would love a fun weekend without being a mom to celebrate my birthday. Who wants to go away with me?!

And because every post needs a picture, look how tiny and cute Amelia was!

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! Another weekend that went by way too quickly. Good thing next weekend is a long weekend....so looking forward to it! Amelia wasn't quite herself this weekend and it was tiring. We saw a glimpse of her happy self on Saturday, but that was about it. Not sure if she is massively teething or what, but she can be happy again anytime soon!

Let's see what we were up to on the weekend:

{friday} Amelia still had a bit of a fever when we got up in the morning, so Mr.D stayed home with her. I headed to work where I had to get caught up on everything that I missed the day before. We didn't do much once I got home from work. Once Amelia was in bed, I took Harley for a walk where I ran into a friend who lives in my neighourhood so we ended up walking together. I headed to bed pretty early myself.

{saturday} in the morning, Mr.D let me have a sleep in, which was greatly appreciated! Once I was up, he headed out for a bike ride with Justin. While they were riding, Amelia and I had a nap and played. Once Amelia was up, we ran to the mall so I could return a few things and then stopped at the grocery store. Once Mr.D got home, we traded off and I headed out for a run in the crazy wind with Harley. We covered 7kms and only cursed the wind a few times ;) When I got home, Amelia was down for a nap, so I quickly changed and went to the Running Room and Wal-Mart. I was looking for a new running jacket that wasn't black, and ended up getting this one in purple. They also had sports bras on BOGO, so I got another Juno and this one. It's so comfortable!

Waiting for Mr.D to get home with the pizza

In the evening, we ordered pizza as we didn't feel like cooking. Once Amelia was in bed, we just hung out watching tv.

{sunday} I was spoiled again and got to have another sleep in! We didn't do much in the morning except try and make Amelia happy in between her nap. In the afternoon, we headed out to our neighbourhood community club as we were hosting a joint birthday party for all of the kids in our prenatal group. We came up with the idea so people didn't feel like they had to invite everyone to their family parties- it was great to see all of the babies and the parents too :) We got home around 3pm and it was gorgeous out, so I took Harley for a walk. Amelia was a crank pot after her afternoon nap, so we alternated taking turns to try and make her happy.

TGIF

Oh man, thank goodness it's Friday and the weekend! After I wrote up my post for yesterday on Wednesday night, Amelia ended up being up for a couple of hours with a fever. I stripped her down, gave her some medicine and we watched some cartoons until midnight. I woke up yesterday feeling terrible so I ended up calling in sick. I felt so guilty taking a sick day already, but I didn't want to get others sick as well.

The high of the week was getting to spend time after work with Amelia and then a good tempo run on Tuesday at lunch.

The low of the week was being sick and Amelia not feeling well either. Send healthy thoughts our way!

The best money I spent was on chocolate covered almonds and cough drops. So exciting! ;)

The meals we had were:

I'm currently reading Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson. I finished Let's Pretend This Never Happened last week and laughed at quite a few parts!

This weekend, we are not doing too much. Mr.D might go for a bike ride and then on Sunday we are having a birthday party/get together with the prenatal group. Really hoping Amelia feels better as I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and how all the kids have grown!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Thinking out loud

I thought I would join in on the popular Thinking Out Loud posts that Amanda hosts each week. It's a good way to get all of my random thoughts out of the way and link up with others doing the same.

1. Debating on which distance to run
I am going to sign up and run a race at the Calgary Marathon again this year, but can't decide which distance to run. Should I do the 10K again or should I do the half? I know I could easily run the 10k, but I also haven't run a half since March 2014. It's about time for another one!

Waiting to cross the start line at the Calgary half marathon in 2011

2. The dreaded day care sickies
Amelia started having a runny nose and a bit of a cough on Sunday and so kindly passed it onto me. Luckily she hasn't had a fever at all and is still herself, so she's gone to the day home this week. Mine is a bit of a runny nose and a tickle in my throat that makes me cough a lot. Guess I better get used to it.

3. Day offs
I just found out that I am getting every third Friday off, which is awesome! Our work gives us the option to work a compressed schedule, so we just have to take a shorter lunch or start work earlier. I've been starting at 8:15 instead of 8:30am and am looking forward to those days off. It will be nice to have a day with Amelia or take a day for myself.  I need a massage really badly so I am going to treat myself to one.

4. Adjusting to going back to work
Knock on wood, but so far the transition back to work has gone relatively smoothly. Amelia seems to be adjusting well to the day home (though is still pretty clingy and cuddly with me when we get home) and work hasn't been too bad so far. Mr.D has been a huge help in the sense that he has been making lots of dinners, walking Harley, etc. Definitely couldn't do it without him!

Run for L'Arche: training week two & staying motivated

The weather in Calgary has been pretty nice lately, but it can easily turn. The cold temperatures and dark nights make it hard to get out of your warm house to run, so I wanted to share a couple tips on how you can stay motivated to train during the winter months.

1. Find a friend or running group

Having a friend or training group can help you stay accountable to showing up and doing the work. I have never trained with a running group, but know many people who have and love it. The Running Room has a couple free training runs each week that anyone can join. Be sure to check out your local Running Room for more information. MEC also has free training runs each week that anyone can join. You can find more information here

2. Share your goals with others

This doesn't mean that you necessarily have to share your specific time goal with others, but you can instead share you want to run a specific race or distance. You can share this a close friend or many people in Facebook, Twitter, a blog, etc. Having others know your goal and to help cheer you on will help!

3.  Dress for the weather

It can be super hard to get out the door when it's cold out, but if you have the right layers it won't make the weather feel too bad. Nicole recently wrote a great post about how to dress for the winter weather. It can be found here. Becky also put one together for beginner runners and it can be found here

4. Incorporate cross training

Training for a race doesn't have to just be all about running- there are many fun classes or workouts that you can add into your schedule. Prior to having my daughter, I was a crossfit addict. Anyone can do it and most places offer a drop in and are very supportive about new people. There are also spin classes, Body Pump, yoga, Orange Theory Fitness, etc. So many fun options!

Onto my training from last week:

Monday January 25
  • Week 4 workout 3 from Sweats in the City. It included box (stair) jumps and DB thrusters

Tuesday January 26
  • 2.5km walk with Harley
  • 1km warm up, 4 x 400m, 1km cool down

Wednesday January 27
  • Week 4 workout 4 from Sweats in the City. It was 100 burpees for time with squats mixed in there. I finished in just over 10 minutes and I was sweating!

Thursday January 28
  • Week 4 workout 5 from Sweats in the City

Friday January 29
  • 5km run

Saturday January 30
  • 4km walk with Harley

Sunday January 31
  • 8km run

Not a bad week considering I returned to work full time and my time to workout has been cut way down.

Scenes from the weekend

Why oh why do weekends have to go so fast! I swear you blink and they are over. Not cool. Let's see what we were up to this weekend:

{friday} I picked Amelia up after work and we had a simple dinner at home. Both Mr.D and I had gone out for lunch with co-workers, so we didn't feel like eating out again (anyone else have zero desire to cook on Friday nights?). Once Amelia was in bed, I went for a solo run and felt like I was moving slow as molasses. We didn't do much else that night except watch tv.

{saturday} Mr.D got up with Amelia and let me have a sleep in, so I was up around 7:45am. Heaven! In the late morning, we took Amelia for her next set of vaccinations. Poor girl screamed while getting them! Once we were out of the room and she saw the other kids playing, she was happy. While we were waiting the mandatory 15 minutes, I was kneeling on the floor while Amelia played and this little girl came up to me and said hi. She then tried to give me a sticker that she got and she was playing with my hair as well. She then just sat herself down on my lap! Her parents apologized, but I didn't mind at all. She was such a cutie. After the appointment, we ran a couple errands and headed home. In the afternoon, I took Harley for a walk.

Mr.D's parents also came for a visit on their way back from Phoenix (they were there for a month and drove down). We ended up ordering Chinese and having a quiet night in.

{sunday} Mr.D's parents left around 9am and then Amelia went down for a nap. While Amelia was sleeping, I headed out for a solo 8km run (Harley hurt his paw so he didn't come with me).  Once I got back, I quickly jumped in the shower before Amelia was up. While I was getting ready, Amelia proceeded to take everything out from under my sink. What a stinker! Just after lunch, we headed to a friend's house for her daughter's birthday party. Amelia became so cranky, so we ended up having to leave a bit early.

The rest of the day was spent doing laundry, making some soup for tonight's dinner and doing anything to keep Amelia happy.
