Blog Squad workouts: Revive Lifestyle Fitness

Two weekends ago, the blog squad was offered the chance to try a workout class at Revive Lifestyle Fitness.  I had originally said no to going as we had Amelia's birthday party earlier in the day, but was able to get cleaned up so I decided to join in. I had no idea what to expect from the class except that it was similar to Orange Theory Fitness, which I enjoyed.

Revive is a new fitness studio having opened only three months ago. The studio definitely looks brand new and gorgeous! They did such a fantastic job setting it up. The studio consists of the main workout room, which features spin bikes, rowers, TRX and kettlebells. Before we knew it, Mike had us on the spin bikes. We started off by inputting our weight, age, sex, and activity level to figure out our functional threshold watt (FTW), which figured out your target zones. The zones were: blue (warm up), green (easy), yellow (moderate), and red (all out). We were on the bike for twenty minutes, and Mike had us working through a workout that included taking us into each of the different zones (ie: all out for a minute). There were TV screens in front of the bikes, so we could easily see how much time was left in each zone and what the next zone was going to be. Being almost twenty weeks pregnant at the time, it wasn't long before my heart rate was up there and I was working up a sweat!

The twenty minutes went by super quickly, and then we were off to the rowers. I've done lots of rowing in crossfit, so I know how great of a workout it can be!
After the rowing workout, we were onto the floor for the strength portion of the workout which included TRX moves (I couldn't do all of them due to being pregnant) and kettlebells. They have a board which shows you the strength portion of the class - and it changes every day.

Pretty sure we all thought were done after the last rowing section, but Mike had another surprise for us. A partner challenge! The partner challenge had one partner rowing 500ms while the other partner did 10 burpees and then held a plank until the other partner finished rowing. Once you both completed the 500m row, you then moved onto 400ms. It was tough!

Overall, I loved the workout! It wasn't just 40-60 minutes of one thing, but instead gave you a full body workout.

Thanks again to Mike and Revive Lifestyle Fitness for having us!

{baby d 2.0}: twenty weeks

Look! An actual picture and not just me in the mirror for once ;)

Feeling: still feeling good, but have had lots of heartburn this week. Wonder if this baby will have a full head of hair like Amelia did?

Workouts: still going pretty strong on the workouts. Mix of walking Harley, a run and Fitness Blender workouts. I love those!

Other: most exciting part of the week was seeing baby at our ultrasound and of course finding out that we are having a BOY! We started discussing names and haven't found one that either of us agree on yet. Names are hard.

Amelia's 2nd birthday

Before I talk about her birthday party, let's rewind to her actual birthday on January 17, 2017. I took the day off of work so we could have a special momma and Amelia day. I wasn't sure what we should do, but decided to check out the swimming pool at Vivo. Of course, she wanted nothing to do with actually going in the water. Oh well, we tried. We played with some building blocks they had after we got changed and then she had a complete meltdown leaving. We can't forget that part because she is two after all!

Once she calmed down, we stopped at Tim Horton's for some birthday tim bits and to pick out a doughnut for dessert. It was a beautiful day when we got home, so we played outside with Harley before she had a nap.

We woke her up from her nap to balloons in her crib which she was super unsure about. Five minutes later, she was asking to go back into her crib and absolutely loved the balloons!

Her day of course ended with a sprinkle doughnut!

We had her birthday party this past Saturday, and I think it went pretty well! I decided on an animal theme since Amelia loves animals so much. Tried to keep everything simple, but still fun. I apparently didn't take many pictures of the decorations or guests, so you will have to believe that both were cute ;)

For food, I tried to go with animal theme, so we had:
  • pigs in a blanket- aka hot dogs wrapped up in crescent rolls
  • worms - aka gummy worms
  • animal snackers - aka animal crackers, goldfish and teddy grahams
  • twigs- aka pretzels
  • puppy chow- aka the most delicious thing I've ever had and wish Alison hadn't introduced me to
  • We also had: fruit/veg trays, cheese and crackers, sugar cookies, cupcakes, chicken wings, and meatballs. And of course beer for the dads ;)
I found a bunch of animal themed colouring sheets on pinterest, so printed those off so the kids could colour which is always a hit. I also ordered animal foam masks from Amazon which were a huge hit with the kids! Wish I would have taken some pictures. For the kids, I had small treat bags with animal crackers, goldfish and teddy grahams with a label that said "please feed the animals! Thank you for coming to my party!"

Thanks for the picture Alison!

I think the best part was how much Amelia hated everyone singing happy birthday to her! Poor girl.

Thank you to everyone who came and helped celebrate Amelia's birthday, and to those that wished her happy birthday!

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! We had a busy and fun weekend that makes me wish it was one day longer. Oh well, I have my day off this Friday so looking forward to that.

{friday} I wasn't feeling super great (felt oddly dizzy and strange), so I went home around lunch. When I got home, I laid in bed watching Gilmore Girls and having a nap. The nap seemed to help as I woke up feeling better. I was going to run some errands for Amelia's birthday party during my lunch hour, so Brian thankfully did it for me when he was done work. Once Amelia was in bed, I finished decorating/cleaning the house and icing sugar cookies and making cupcakes.

{saturday} we were having Amelia's birthday party at our house from 11-1pm, so the morning was spent cleaning up and preparing for it. I think she had fun with all of her little friends here. Minus when she got upset over everyone singing happy birthday to her ;) I'll share more on her party this week.

After everyone left, Amelia went down for a much needed nap and then we cleaned up the house. I decided last minute to join the blog squad at a fitness class at Revive Lifestyle Fitness, which kicked my butt! More on this later this week.

After class, I stopped to pick up pizza for dinner (hey, I did just do a workout after all!), and then we spent the night hanging out. I ended up falling asleep on the couch at 8:15pm, and then put myself to bed shortly after 9:30pm. I'm so wild and crazy ;)

{sunday} we had a pretty lazy morning at home considering Amelia slept in until 8:30am! Once she was up, we watched a movie, had breakfast and she had a bath as she had leaked through her diaper in the night and was kind of stinky. We left just before noon to head to a play place for a friend's sons birthday party (he was in our baby class). It was a fun time and we left around 1:45pm as someone was in desperate need of a nap.

While Amelia napped, I laid in bed watching Gilmore Girls and may have had a nap myself. I did a workout from Fitness Blender once I motivated myself to get up and then we spent the evening hanging out.

Tell me: how was your weekend?

{baby d 2.0}: nineteen weeks

19 weeks
Feeling: pretty good! Besides the normal tiredness that comes with being pregnant/working full-time/having a toddler. I'd love for my face to stop breaking out and my boobs to stop itching- if that's not asking to much ;)

Also feeling so much movement! The baby was kicking super hard the other night and Brian even got to feel the kicks. Nothing beats that!

Workouts: a mix of two runs, walks with Harley, and at home workouts from Fitness Blender. Really trying to get back into a good routine.

Other: so excited to see the baby today and find out the gender! What are your guesses? I have zero feelings either way.

{amelia} : two years old

Dear Amelia,

Today you turn the big 0-2! Crazy that another year has passed us by and you have grown in so many ways. Last year on your birthday, you weren't walking and barely had any teeth. Now you don't stop running, have almost all your teeth (minus the last molars to come in) and don't ever stop talking! This year brought many changes including you starting at the day home, and with time, you have come to love it. No more tears in the morning and you get excited to go. Nothing beats picking you up after work and the door opening you saying momma!

You are my goofball who loves stickers, colouring, reading books, playing with your babies, having tea parties and doing puzzles. You have also started to play hide-n-seek, which entails you hiding in the most obvious places and us pretending we don't see you. It always ends in a fit of laughter from you!

Your babies go with you almost every day to the day home, and on the way home you always tell me that baby is sleeping {and make sleeping noises to go along with it} or that she pooped that day.  You always tell me that baby is cold, so we have to wrap her up and then she goes night night.

You absolutely love bubbles, which means every bath has to have bubbles in it. Speaking of water- you also love to wash your hands too. You push up the sleeves on your shirt and tell me to "come momma" and grab my hand so we can go in the bathroom.

You do not like when I take your picture lately and will say "no cheese" to me unless we take a selfie together and make funny faces. Silly girl :)

You are starting to talk way more and say things that we can actually understand. You always tell us that you are stuck (ie: in the car seat) and love to call us mommadadda. Always one word even if it's only one person in the room. You love ask to go up to the sky (meaning throw her in the air- I blame Sam for that one!) and still say thank you quite often.

You love to be wrapped up in blankets especially after a nap or in the morning. If I ask you if you want to get dressed, you say yes and that you want to wear something "cute", haha. I might tell her that her hat, jacket and boots are cute in the morning to help get us out the door.

You still absolutely love your bottles (or sippy cups) of milk. That calms you right down if you are melting down before bed time. You still also absolutely love pasta and would live on it if we let you. That and cookies. Always asking for cookies and mom has a rubber arm. You also love: bananas, corn, cheese, yogurt, cous cous, rice.

You are wearing size 2T in most things and size 5 shoes. Still in size 4 diapers during the day and night.

We absolutely love you Amelia!

Five on Friday

Happy Friday everyone! How was your week? Mine wasn't too bad- work was a bit slow, which makes the days go by slowly.

{one} Brian ordered something from Best Buy over Christmas and accidentally forgot to change our address. We have the mail forwarding, but it doesn't apply to parcels apparently. We had our realtor contact the new ones realtor as Canada Post shows it as being delivered to the bank of mail boxes. They told our realtor that they didn't receive anything. We even went to the post office to see if it happened to be there, but no suck luck. What the heck do we do now? Think we are shit out of luck?

{two} meals from this week:

Sunday: chilli and cornbread
Monday:  avocado, bacon and turkey paninis and a salad
Tuesday: portobello penne pasta casserole {this was so good, but so rich! Definitely a once in a while dish}
Wednesday: greek turkey meatballs in a pita
Thursday: quiche

{three} I asked this on Twitter, but what are your thoughts on the use of lots of gifs in blog posts?

{four} I've started running again and oh man, I'm slow and out of shape! ;) Well, I guess pregnant too, haha. It's feeling good to be running again even if it's once a week.

{five} have a great weekend everyone!

Scenes from the weekend

{friday} I had the day off, and had made zero plans except for taking Amelia to the day home. After her and Brian left in the morning, I hung out watching tv, doing some laundry and being lazy. I left mid morning to run some errands and got back just after lunch. A quick nap may have been taken on the couch before I got the motivation to take Harley for a walk. Brian had gone for a bike ride, so I picked Amelia up and we made some mini pizzas for dinner and then hung out and played.

going night night with Harley
{saturday} we were invited to a play place for one of the boys from our baby groups birthday, so we headed out around 9:30am. Amelia had a fun time playing and it was great catching up with everyone from our baby group. Minus the epic meltdown Amelia threw when leaving and that continued in the car, it was a fun time :) We got home to have some lunch and put Amelia down for a nap (she ended up sleeping for 3 hours!).  I pretty much did nothing except take a short nap while Amelia did and it was fabulous.

I did get the motivation and did a 21 day fix workout and then we got Vietnamese take out for dinner. There goes my workout, haha. Once Amelia was in bed, I did some crafting for her upcoming birthday party.

she always wants a headband too when I put one on to workout
{sunday} ever have one of those mornings where you wake up in a foul mood for no reason? That was me. I spent the morning vacuuming, cleaning up our closet and taking out clothes that I can't wear right now. Man, does my closet look empty now!!  Brian went to get groceries, so Amelia and I hung out watching a movie and doing a workout. Let's see, what else? When she had a nap, I took Harley for a short and freezing cold run! After that, Brian made chilli for dinner while I made corn bread muffins and banana muffins. Both were new recipes and turned out delicious!

And, there goes another weekend. How was yours?

Five on Friday

Happy Friday everyone! I'm off today with no major plans. I'll probably run some errands for Amelia's birthday party, walk Harley and otherwise enjoy a day to myself :)

(one) here are the meals we had this week:

Monday: lime shrimp dragon noodles- they were pretty darn tasty! We added mushrooms and cut the sriracha in half and it was still spicy. Next time we'd add more veggies and another package of ramen noodles.

Tuesday: beef satay, veggies and coconut rice

Wednesday: blt chopped salad with corn, feta and avocado.  We added chicken and marinated it with this recipe

Thursday: chicken and avocado parm with spaghetti and caesar salad

(two) I'm in a reading slump- meaning I have no idea what to read. What have you been reading lately? I read The Couple Next Door and Maybe In Another Life while we were away. Both were pretty good.

(three) when we were heading home from the airport on the 30th, we stopped at Freshii for a salad as we had eaten a lot of bad food over the week. Both salads we got were super delicious! We didn't have left overs for lunch today, so we both had to get something. Funny enough, without talking to each other, we both went to Freshii again. It's so good. Way better than Chopped Leaf! And no, I wasn't paid to say that. I just love it that much.

(four) let's keep going with the food theme I apparently have going on today. I brought home a container of fruit I bought for my snack at work, and Amelia saw it. She wanted some and I thought no way she would have any of it. She sure proved me wrong by demolishing a bunch of blueberries and blackberries. Learn something new about her every day :)

(five) have a great weekend everyone!

{baby d 2.0}: seventeen weeks

I've been terrible at taking pictures of my belly this time around. No idea why- maybe just the busyness of every day life combined with moving, and going away? Need to get better about it since it's fun to look back at.

17 weeks 4 days
  • I had my next check up at the maternity clinic and everything was good. Heard the heart beat again and it was in the 150s. She asked if I had any questions and I was like should I?!
  • Feeling pretty good overall. Still getting headaches, so trying to drink even more water. Lots of heart burn and gas {meaning my stomach hurts from it, not lots of farting haha}
  • excited to find out the gender in two weeks and "see" baby again
  • not sure what's growing faster- my belly or my boobs!
  • I've been really slacking on working out lately, so trying to get back into it. Even if it's a 20 minute walk with Harley, it's better than nothing at all.
  • pretty sure I've been feeling some fluttering, but no major movements. I did ask at my 12 week ultrasound where my placenta was and it's posterior this time (it was anterior last time).
  • see my seventeen week update with Amelia here.

Christmas break 2016: part two

Find part one here

The next day we decided to go check out Old Town. Not really sure what I was expecting, but that wasn't it. We walked around for a bit and decided to head out. We ended up down by the water front, where Amelia saw a water fountain and freaked out when we didn't go to it. Back we went! We managed to get her away from it for a bit, so we walked down to the naval ship that you could tour {we didn't go on as it was insanely busy} and I wanted to see the famous kissing statue.

The next day we decided to all split up. My mom ended up staying at the house as she caught a really bad cold and was feeling awful. My brother and his gf dropped Brian, Amelia and I off at the zoo right as it opened which ended up being perfect timely. It wasn't insane when we first got there, but definitely was when we left around 12:30pm! The line up just to get into the parking lot was crazy!

The zoo definitely isn't a cheap thing to do {$50/US per adult}, but we knew that was the one thing we really wanted to do with Amelia. After touring the zoo, we can see why it costs so much. It's huge and so well kept! I don't think we saw a single piece of garbage and lots of volunteers there helping to direct you if you got lost.

While we were at the zoo, Riley and Sam went to Balboa Park and said it was pretty neat. Busy though!

That afternoon, my mom said she would watch Amelia if she got up early from her nap {she ended up napping for almost 3 hours!}, so we headed out to go stand up paddle boarding with Ry and Sam. It was $60 to rent the boards for two people for two hours and it was so much fun {we rented from here in La Jolla}! We didn't get any pictures as we didn't take a phone with us, but definitely a highlight. The best part was laughing so hard at Brian who just couldn't keep his balance!

On our second to last day, the rest of the gang decided to rent motorcycles for the day for an adventure, which left Amelia and I. I dropped them off at the rental place, which was downtown so I decided to take Amelia to The New Children's Museum. It wasn't the cheapest to go to ($24 US for the two of us), but it was a lot of fun! It wasn't a huge place, but Amelia had lots of fun trying all of the different things. Her favourite was the beans/puff balls and the bubbles outside :)

When we got back, Amelia went down for a nap and I sat outside enjoying the sunshine. They didn't get back until 4pm from the ride, so we had an easy dinner at the house and just hung out.

On our last and final day, the sun was shining so we decided to go check out Mission Beach which was super close to our house. Amelia loved the sand and maybe not the cold water so much ;)

Overall, we had a great trip to San Diego. It was great being able to spend time with my family and not have the fuss of Christmas. We would definitely go back in a heart beat!
