Scenes from the week + end

Happy Tuesday everyone! I'm a little late getting this up as my mom left last night, and I'd rather spend the time with her :) We had a good couple days together, and Amelia was pretty sad that she wasn't here this morning.

Let's recap the past week and weekend by pictures:

One on one time with Gabe on Wednesday
Grandma and Amelia making me a birthday cake

Celebrating my 31st birthday
A trip to the zoo on Friday, where it was super quiet! The weather was nice, so it was a perfect day to go. The best part was the show the hippos put on for us!

My mom watched the kids on Friday night, so Brian and I could go out for dinner. Amelia wanted to be in the picture, but not actually take one. Haha her face kills me

On Saturday, our neighbourhood community centre had a Halloween party for the kids, so we went to check it out. The kids could play games and then pick out a candy, which Amelia caught onto very quickly!

On Monday, we took grandma with us to the library to pick out some new books. I spotted a fun wall near by, so of course we had to take a picture

Happy Birthday Leigh

When Leigh asked me if I wanted to write her a birthday blog post this year I thought "Didn't I just write one?". Turns out, that was in fact one year ago. Sure doesn't feel like it. Feels like it was about a month ago. This year seems like its been in fast forward.

About a year ago, Amelia was dressed up as a monkey.
And Leigh and I were doing our best to make another baby. Amelia got conceived REALLY quick, so we thought maybe our second would be the same. Turns out we were right! Didn't take too many sessions before that bun was in the oven.

Our family unit of four (I include Harley) was going to become five. This is what we wanted, but I'd be lying if I told you that I felt prepared for it. We were getting real comfortable with our routine with Amelia, and it seemed like our life had enough going on already. How would another baby change our dynamic? How would Amelia react to having to share our attention? How were we going to adapt from double team defence to man-to-man coverage? These worries rooted themselves in the back of my mind, and although they didn't keep me up at night, they were questions I thought about from time to time.

I absolutely loved watching Amelia grow as a child and Leigh grow as a mom together. How can you not help but smile when you get to see this everyday?

Christmas rolled around and it was off to San Diego for the Debenham's. Traveling at Christmas with a toddler is so much fun and I highly recommend it..... If I can give a word of advice, pay extra for a direct flight.

The best part of that trip as I remember it was going to the San Diego Zoo. Watching Amelia's face light up when she sees animals was worth fighting all the other tourists that day. I'd love to post a picture of Amelia looking so happy being at the zoo, but if you know my daughter, nothing puts a frown on her face than seeing a camera turned towards her.
But sometimes you catch her in a good mood and get photo gold.

Throughout Leigh's pregnancy we were constantly telling Amelia that she was going to have a sibling, a little baby brother or sister, and although she seemed to understand that there was a baby in mommy's belly, we didn't know how she would react when the baby was actually in her life. We were lucky that Amelia wanted to be a part of the gender reveal photos (well any kid would want to be if it meant they got to eat cupcakes). I was so happy when I found out we were having a girl when Leigh got pregnant the first time (pressure was off, Leigh got her daughter), and I still believe I would have been happy as a father with two girls. That being said, when we found out we were having a boy, I had a hard time containing my excitement.
I was also super excited for my father, because up to that point he had four granddaughters and no grandson. He loves his granddaughters, but he never looked comfortable being around them as babies. Gabe is a different story though. He'll take Gabe and hold him no problem.

I know that Leigh was super excited to have a little boy, and was also super nervous. She knew how to do everything for a little girl, but a little baby boy? That was a totally different ball game. Names were hard too. Gabe's name took FOREVER to figure out! Way harder that Amelia's. But spring went bye really quickly. Before we felt like we were ready, Gabe was on his way.
All those worries and fears Leigh had about raising a baby boy disappeared. We didn't have the time or energy to be worried or afraid. We tried to work out a routine so that we could both get some rest, but I know that I got the lion's share of sleep (and still do, sorry Leigh). Summer rolled around, which meant I taught summer school, Amelia stayed in the day home, and Leigh had the month of July to bond with Gabriel.
Oh did I mention that Amelia absolutely loves her brother? Like so much it can be annoying. Like when he is sleeping and she misses him and gets upset that we won't go wake him up. "I want to see my brudder!" Hugs and kisses for Gabe are her favorite now.
August was our first month as a full family. I was off work, Amelia was out of the day home, so we had a whole month to work out our new dynamic. Lots of time outside, playing at the playground and in the back yard. We were also fortunate enough to travel back to Ontario to spend a week with Leigh's family. Amelia loved it, and Gabe didn't put up too much of a fuss.

The return from Ontario meant a return to work for me. This was the beginning of Leigh's biggest challenge as a mom; 1 adult, 2 children. I was so nervous for her, because I felt completely helpless because I literally couldn't help. I have to say that I know that it hasn't been easy for Leigh, but she has done an incredible job looking after and caring for both my kids 4 days a week. I could never do her job as a parent. I would not be able to handle taking care of both kids all day every day by myself. I know there are so many moms that do this too, but I am still blown away by the love and affection she shows them every day. No matter how Leigh is feeling, I know my kids feel loved every day, and as a father that is all I can ask for.

So to my wife, I love you, I appreciate you and all the things you do, and I hope you have a happy birthday.

Scenes from the week + end

Happy Monday! Another weekend went by too quickly, but at least this week is going to be an exciting one (my mom is coming for a visit and it's my birthday!).

Monday: while Gabe napped in the morning, Amelia and I headed to the basement so I could work out and she played. She of course had to dress up as a princess :) It was a beautiful day out, so  we went to pick something up and then to a park in our neighbourhood that Amelia hadn't been to.

The most amazing part of this day would have to be the two hour nap Amelia had in the afternoon, and Gabe napping at the same time!! This literally never happens anymore, so I even got to have a short nap myself.

Tuesday: Amelia had her class in the morning, so while she was at that, Gabe and I went for a walk. It was another nice day out, and I didn't have any errands I needed to do. On our walk, we stopped to check out the new murals that our community hired an artist to do on the utility boxes. They are amazing! After her class, the library book truck was in the parking lot, so we stopped in and picked up a couple books. Since it was so nice out, we headed to another park in a neighboring community.

Wednesday: after we dropped Amelia off at the dayhome, we had a quiet morning at home before heading to my doctor's appointment. After my appointment, we went to Costco to pick up a couple things (found some Christmas presents for Amelia).  We got home in the late afternoon, and Gabe was happy, so we did a little photoshoot.

Thursday: in the morning, we headed down to East Village again for Tara's babes with babe class. Amelia was grumpy during the class, but I got my workout done. Brian was home for a bit in the afternoon as he had work event that night, so I took Harley for a walk while he was home. I had to do bedtime alone, and managed to get both kids in bed and asleep by 7:30pm!

Neighbourhood watch
Friday: I had zero desire to do much this day, but we were going to run out to the store to get a couple things when Gabe decided to fall asleep in the swing. I transferred him to his crib, where he ended up having a 3 hour (!!!) nap! Since he was sleeping, Amelia and I hung out, played in her sensory table, and made cookies. It was kind of nice not doing much for once! I left around 4:30pm to meet up with some co-workers for dinner. Nice to have some time out.

Saturday: Brian and Justin went biking in the morning, so I took the kids to our neighbourhood pumpkin giveaway. It's fun that Amelia kind of gets Halloween this year and was so excited to choose one.

Brian's parents came down for a visit in the afternoon, so they hung out with Amelia while we took Gabe to get his vaccinations. He screamed when he got them, but settled down pretty quickly after them.

Sunday: Brian's parents left in the morning, and we had a pretty slow day around the house. Amelia was so grumpy and not listening (aka hitting me and getting angry), so lots of time outs were had for her. I ran out to get groceries, did some laundry, vacuumed and cleaned the bathrooms. It was a pretty quiet day!
