Mind & body after baby V2: six months

This update is only a month late, but I like looking back on these so I wanted to get it up. You can my previous updates here:

Body update

I feel like I've been stuck in a rut lately in terms of getting the weight off. I have no problem working out and do so about 5-6 times per week (combination of running, walking Harley, and doing at home workouts). Eating is my biggest downfall as I love snacking and carbs. I recently started a sugar free challenge (will talk more about that in an upcoming post), and it's helped me make smarter choices in terms of food as sugar is in everything! The scale is finally moving again, which is good.

 Mind update

Sometimes it feels like I get passed the thing or event that is giving me anxiety, and then something else comes up. After Brian went back to work at the end of summer, it took me a bit to get into a routine with the kids and to not feel so overwhelmed about being alone with the kids. Now that we are over half way through my maternity leave, I'm starting to feel anxious about going back to work. Yes, I want to go back to work, but am also anxious about it. We don't have a day home lined up yet, but we are hoping both kids can go back to where Amelia goes (fingers crossed she has space!). With Amelia, I was so ready to go back to work, but this time I'm feeling a little sad about it. Amelia is at a fun (yet oh so trying age), that I'm scared of missing out on things with both of them. Man, the feelings and emotions associated with being a mom and a working mom can be overwhelming!

I've been getting out of the house to do things without the kids more often this time too. I've been going to a running group or trying new things which I definitely need to do. Gabe is starting to get attached to me (which isn't a bad thing, but makes leaving hard), which is why I also want to make sure I take the time for myself and get out of the house during the week nights or on the weekend.

Scenes from the week + end

I can't believe it's already the end of January! Wasn't it just Christmas? We had a quieter week last week as both of the kids had colds/runny noses. And poor Gabe is getting three teeth at once, so he was extra clingy/fussy. Plus the weather turned cold and bundling kids up to go out isn't much fun.

We spent some time outside before the weather turned cold so Amelia could ride her scooter that she got for her birthday.

I usually work out while Gabe has his morning nap, and took off my tank top as I was hot. Amelia insisted on wearing it :)

We spent Tuesday morning at home and I really wanted to get out of the house in the afternoon, so that meant Amelia fell asleep in the stroller on our walk.

Mister trouble (aka Gabe) loves to beeline it for Harley's dish the second you put him down to crawl on our main floor. I've cleaned up water a lot lately, haha.

He is impossible to take pictures of now as he doesn't sit still long enough!

Amelia insists on picking out her outfits now, so this was her choice. Blue shirt, purple pants, and green rain boots on the wrong feet

On Thursday night, I met up with Nicole at the winter warrior challenge put on by Saucony and the Tech shop. It consisted of running to three different locations and doing a fitness challenge at each location (ie: burpees, lunges, etc). We ended up getting SUPER lost from the first station, but still managed to run 5kms, so it wasn't all lost. And I won a hat!

On Saturday, I braved the freezing cold weather to run my first trail race in the coulees in Tuscany (super close to my house). I decided to do the 4km route instead of the 8km route and am glad I did. The wind was wicked and I need to buy some better spikes. I had fun though!

Cuddles and giggles with mom (don't mind the crazy post run hair and no make up)

Tell me: how was your weekend?

{amelia}: three years old

First birthday update
Second birthday letter

Dear Amelia,

You are 3 years old! Weren't we just celebrating your second birthday and you cried when everyone sang to you?

This has been a big year for you- you became a big sister. And you absolutely love being one and love your brother. When you go to the day home on Wednesday's, Erica always tells us how much you talk about him. We are starting to see a bit more jealousy now that Gabe is on the move and can interact more with us, but it's not too bad.

On top of becoming a big sister, your language has grown leaps and bounds. You honestly don't stop talking all.day.long. I love hearing the things you come up with, but it can also be very tiring. There are words that you use that I didn't even know you knew. Last night, she turns to Brian and goes, "I love you big boy". Haha. Every night I say that I love you to the moon and back, and you say, "no, I love you back and the moon". I love it so much!

You are so social, and love being around people. But you also love being at home and just hanging out too. I signed you up for a program at our community centre, which you are really enjoying. You get to do crafts, sing songs, and read books for an hour every week. I love hearing all the little bits of things you do there like sing the goodbye song.

Your favourite things include: painting, colouring, doing crafts, watching movies, playing games on our phones, building towers, playing play doh, playing with stickers, and reading books. You would paint and colour all day long if I let you. You also love our weekly trips to the library to pick out new books, so that we can read them to you before bed. You also love being outside whether it's riding your scooter, your bike, going for walks, sledding or just playing in the backyard.

You are still a bit of a picky eater, but we are working on it. You will at least try more things now, which is all we ask. If you like it, even better for us! Fruit snacks or a granola bar are vital to leaving the house for you. You still also love milk, but only get it in the morning and at dinner time.

You are fully potty trained! I was nervous about doing it, but after a bad start, you did so well at it. You wore pull ups for about two weeks (until we ran out of them) at bedtime, but haven't since then. Now, you barely let me come into the bathroom to help you when you go.

We love you Amelia!

Four months
Five months
Six months

Weight/height: the last time I weighed him, he was just under 17lbs but that was with clothes on.

Diapers/clothes: he's still wearing size 3 baby dry diapers, but is still having lots of blow outs. Anyone else have this issue with their kids? What diapers worked for you? He's wearing a mix of 6 month, 9 month and 6-12 month clothes.

  • sucking his thumb
  • his sister
  • crawling every where
  • taking a bath
  • trying to empty Harley's water dish

  • waiting on food if you put him his high chair
  • being tired
  • sitting still
Eating: this last month has brought a lot of new food for Gabe. He has tried lots of stuff, and we've been doing a mix of purees and baby led weaning. I can't say there is anything he really dislikes.

I'm still breast feeding, but he does get a bottle of formula before bed and occasionally throughout the day if I feel like my supply is low.

Sleeping: oh man, I wish he was a good sleeper like Amelia was at this age :( he was getting better with sleeping through the night (with a feed between 4-6am), but then he got a cold. Hopefully once this cold passes, his sleep will get better again.

He goes to bed between 6:30-7pm and then is up anywhere between 6:30-8am. He naps usually 3 times a day and they range from 30-2 hours.

  • he got his 3rd tooth (bottom right)
  • has become a crawling machine

Catching up

Whoa! Those three weeks flew by and I don't even know where the time went. I didn't have the desire and didn't make time to sit down at my computer to blog. I have lots to catch up on blogging about (Gabe's 7 month post, Amelia's 3 year old post, my 6 month mind/body update, potty training), so those will be coming later this week and next. Until then, let's catch up on the random day to day things going on :)

I've been running more often thanks to the Lululemon/Strava 40/80 challenge earlier this month. I ended up running just over 40kms in the two weeks, which is a decent amount for me lately. I've also been chosen as a race ambassador for the St. Patrick's day race and the Stampede road race, which is exciting. If you want to join me at either race, use the discount code LEIGH2018 to save $5.

She just loves him so much

We went to a superhero birthday party, so super Amelia was ready to save the city

Poor Gabe has a cold and has been extra sleepy/cuddly lately

She got a new hat from Alison + kids, and put it on herself and wore it for dinner
My younger brother came out for a week long visit last Saturday- it was nice having him here. I felt bad that I couldn't take him to do too much during the week, but he went snowboarding one day by himself and had fun. Brian also took him fat biking on the weekend. For Amelia's birthday, we took her to an indoor play place, and she loved it! Riley was awesome and followed her around in there as I had Gabe. Another day, we took the kids and Harley for a walk, and then spent time outside while Amelia rode her bike and scooter since it was so nice out.

Tell me: how are things with you? What's new?

Happy new year!

Happy new year everyone! Did you have a nice Christmas? Do anything exciting for NYE? We had a super quiet NYE and Amelia came down with a fever in the afternoon. Luckily it didn't stay too long and she was back to normal the next day.

Over the Christmas break, my mom flew in to spend Christmas with us. This was the first year since Brian and I have been together that we haven't traveled to Edmonton or Ontario, and it was nice. Our Christmas morning consisted of Amelia opening presents (and saying "what happened out here?" when we got her out of bed and she saw the presents), and having a delicious breakfast casserole. For dinner, Brian made an amazing prime rib dinner with all of the fixings. We also invited one of my co-workers and his wife over as they had no plans, so it was a nice casual dinner.

While my mom was here, we managed to do a lot of stuff! My mom took Amelia to a movie, out for lunch, shopping to pick out a gift from her for Gabe, Brian and myself. We also went to zoo lights, to the Calgary Reads house, played in the snow, etc.

Christmas morning

Tell me: how was your Christmas and NY?
